. . . Donates N2 million to Hospital, Nursing College The Vice Presidential Candidate of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, in 2019 elections, Mr Peter Obi, has urged nursing students to continue to pursue their education with more seriousness and devotion, stating that their profession remains a very noble one and very beneficial to society. During his visit to Our Lady of Lourdes Specialist Hospital, and Our Lady of Lourdes College of Nursing Sciences, both in Ihiala, Obi made a financial investment of N2 million to the Hospital Management. He encouraged them to commit the money to the improvement of health services in the hospital and for upgrading their educational facilities at the College of Nursing Sciences. Obi encouraged the students to see their professional training beyond earning a living, but as an avenue of advancing the cause of humanity. Handing over the cheque of N2 million to the Chief Executive Officer of Our Lady of Lourdes Specialist Hospital, and Our Lady of Lourdes College of Nursing Sciences, Ihiala, Rev Fr Ugochukwu Onuorah, Obi, mentioned that he was particular about investing his resources in the training of nurses and midwives. He noted that the critical role they play in societal development cannot be over-emphasized, while lamenting the impending severe scarcity of nurses in the next few years, if nothing is done to train more nurses. "Recent statistics have shown that the world will run shortage of nurses and midwives by 2030 and it will take about 10 million nurses to fill in the gaps. We must, therefore, begin now to invest more resources into the training of nurses and midwives so as to ensure that we not only have enough nurses in our health sector but we can export well trained health workers to the world", Obi said. Appreciating Obi, on behalf of the hospital and the nursing college, for his relentless contributions to better society, Fr Onuorah said Obi is god-sent to humanity, especially Nigeria. He described Obi's passion and enthusiasm for a better society as unequalled. He concluded that a man like Obi has the capacity and the zeal to transform Nigeria into a great nation, if given the opportunity.

Lalasticlala Seun Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Let us give this a voice ![]() |
![]() |
The Vice-Presidential Candidate of the People's Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2019 General Elections, Mr Peter Obi, has pointed out that committed support for Micro, Small and Medium Entreprises (MSMEs), through well articulated fiscal and monetary policies, remains the surest way of eradicating poverty in Nigeria. Obi, who has remained a committed advocate of a private sector-driven economy as the engine of economic growth, made the remark in a message to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. He maintained that a government desirous of taking people out of poverty, must support the small business sector. He explained that comparable economically progressive countries like Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines etc each has a thriving private sector which encourages Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Job creation and Poverty Reduction. He observed that the public sector is often associated with mismanagement of resources, financial imprudence and looting of public funds that end up deepening the level of poverty in the country. "There is a strong positive relationship between economic growth, MSMEs growth, GDP per capita growth and overall development of the economy. A vibrant private sector, especially the MSMEs, will not only benefit the people through job creation and increase in economic activities, but will also benefit the government which will be able to generate more revenue through taxation, when more people are gainfully employed. "For example, Indonesia, with a population of 260 million people, has about 150 million of its population as the workforce, and MSMEs employ over 90% of this workforce, which is about 135 million people, and contribute over 60% of Indonesia's GPD. So the Nigerian government must support the small business sector in order eradicate poverty", Obi concluded. He further advised Nigerians to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship, which are mostly showcased through MSMEs, noting that this will definitely lead to job creation and poverty eradication. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is celebrated on October 17 every year. 1 Like
