Computers / Future Version Of Samsung Exynos Chip Will Be Used For Windows 10 Pcs by kennywesmont: 9:16pm On Jul 27, 2020
Microsoft still pushes hard for Windows 10 on ARM and devices powered by such chips, but right now, the market is still limited to Qualcomm’s own processors.

However, if new report is anything to be believed, then the world of ARM-based Windows 10 PCs could soon get a new big name.

Samsung is believed to be building a new Exynos processor whose role would be specifically to be installed on Windows PCs. There are reports that the South Korean tech giant has already looked into several prototypes, including a PC-optimized version of the Exynos 990, but for now, it looks like the company just wants to go for a new chip with increased performance.

Needless to say, Samsung will be the first company to use its very own ARM chip, as the South Koreans are already building Windows 10 PCs.
Announcement next month?

There’s a chance that a future version of the Galaxy Book would run on such a new processor, although it goes without saying that the company is also exploring deals that would provide others with the chip in order to power their Windows 10 devices.

At this point, it’s still not clear when the new Exynos chip for Windows 10 PCs is supposed to see daylight, but a massive Samsung event is just around the corner.

The company will take the wraps off the new Galaxy Note20 and a series of other products, including a new smartwatch, at an event on August 5, so it remains to be seen if any announcements on the Windows 10 PC side are actually made.

Samsung joining the Windows 10 on ARM push can only be good news for Microsoft, especially as until now, this strategy has yet to gain traction. Whether or not Samsung could help make this effort more successful is something that will remain to be seen in the long term.

Computers / Microsoft Announces New Windows 10 Diagnostic Data Options by kennywesmont: 9:11pm On Jul 27, 2020
The telemetry service in Windows 10 has long been a very controversial topic as far as Microsoft’s operating system is concerned, with many accusing the software giant of collecting too much information from their devices.

And while the company itself has always explained that some data is absolutely necessary to keep Windows 10 up and running and resolve any issues that users may come across, it has also bundled more advanced controls to view the data and manage the telemetry service in the OS.

As far as enterprises are concerned, Microsoft has previously provided these customers with two different options when Windows 10 was installed on their devices.

The first of the two was an option that allowed Microsoft to be the controller of everything, basically allowing the software giant to determine how it collects data to improve Windows 10.

The second was an option that just disabled the diagnostic data entirely, technically blocking Windows 10 from sending any information to Microsoft.

Microsoft is now experimenting with a third option that will allow enterprises running Windows 10 to be the one deciding what data they are sending to Microsoft, but at the same time, allow Microsoft to be the data processor. Microsoft explains:

“Customers will have a third option that allows them to be the controller for their Windows 10 diagnostic data, while still benefiting from the purposes that this data serves, such as quality of updates and device drivers. Under this approach, Microsoft will act as a data processor, processing Windows diagnostic data on behalf of the controller.”

What’s important to know is that this feature is currently available only as a preview, and customers who want to see how this works can actually give it a try before the public rollout.

Microsoft explains that it’s betting big on transparency, and the release of this new Windows diagnostic data control is a step in the right direction.

“This new option will enable customers to use familiar tools to manage, export, or delete data to help them meet their compliance obligations. For example, using the Microsoft Azure portal, customers will have the means to respond to their own users’ requests, such as delete and export diagnostic data. Admins can easily add – or remove – Windows devices to the service using group policy or mobile device management (MDM),” Microsoft says.

Worth emphasizing is that the changes that we detailed here are only aimed at enterprises, so no changes will occur for consumers.

At this point, the consumer versions of Windows 10 come with two diagnostic data options:

Basic: Send only info about your device, its settings and capabilities, and whether it is performing properly
Full: Send all Basic diagnostic data, along with info about websites you browse and how you use apps and features, plus additional info about device health, device activity, and enhanced error reporting.

As you can see, consumers aren’t provided with an option to disable telemetry services in Windows 10, albeit this is possible in other ways using a more complex approach and registry settings. Furthermore, there are lots of dedicated apps out there that can disable data collection entirely in Windows 10, but Microsoft obviously recommends against using them.

Windows 10, however, also comes with options to view diagnostic data, with a dedicated Diagnostic Data Viewer providing you with more information about the software giant collected from users’ computers. What’s more, the operating system also comes with a dedicated option to delete diagnostic data, with the company promising that all copies are removed from its systems as well once this trigger is activated.

Webmasters / What’s New In Microsoft Edge Dev Build 85.0.564.8 by kennywesmont: 10:22pm On Jul 20, 2020
Microsoft has released a new Microsoft Edge Dev, and this time the first thing you need to know is that this is the final build for major version 85.

In other words, this update should be promoted to the beta channel rather soon, then expected to make its way to the stable branch with additional fixes.

As every single update for the Dev channel, this new build comes with lots of new goodies, and while you can check the full changelog in the box after the jump, there are several items that are worth checking out.

First and foremost, Microsoft continues its work on making Microsoft Edge an advanced PDF reader, just like its predecessor, Microsoft Edge legacy.

So this update introduces a new button to the PDF toolbar that allows users to highlight text, something that comes in very handy to those who work with documents on a regular basis.

Then, there is a new option to undo certain actions in Collections, but also additional settings to reorder the extension icons on the toolbar using the Alt + Shift + arrows shortcut on the keyboard.

Microsoft says it’s also making it easier to report unsafe downloads right from the download manager.

“Added an option to the … menu for each item that appears on the Downloads shelf to report it as a safe or unsafe file (which option appears is dependent on SmartScreen’s determination of the file’s safety),” the company says.

Enterprises are getting new policies, as it follows:

Added a management policy to Exempt Domain File Type Pairs From File Type Download Warnings. Note that Administrative Templates will come later.
Added support for the Chromium management policy to Auto Launch Protocols From Origins, which allows admins to define a list of protocols that can launch an external application from listed origins without a prompt.

Unsurprisingly, there are also plenty of fixes, including for crashes occurred when opening a tab in IE mode, when singing into the browser, or when closing the browser after creating a new profile.
Webmasters / The Most Significant Microsoft Edge For Android Update Isn’t A New Feature by kennywesmont: 3:41pm On Jul 12, 2020
Microsoft Is betting super-big on Microsoft Edge browser, and while at first glance the company is fully-focused on the Windows 10 version, it’s actually hoping the app would be a hit on all platforms where it’s available.

The move to the Chromium engine has clearly been a wise move for Microsoft, as it allowed the company to make Edge a cross-platform offering. In other words, Edge is now available not only on Windows 10, but also on Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and even macOS.

What’s more, Microsoft is also working on a Linux version of Microsoft Edge, which is truly something big for the world’s number one software company, so yes, the transition to Chrome has been a decision that really helps Microsoft in the long term.

But in addition to the desktop platforms, Edge is also offered to users on Android and iPhone. And while at first glance they don’t receive as much love as Edge on the desktop, they’re actually part of a much more ambitious plan.

Living proof in this regard is the Android version of Edge, which comes with pretty advanced functionality that keeps users tied to Microsoft’s ecosystem. In other words, Edge is part of an app arsenal whose purpose is to allow users to fully enjoy Microsoft’s products even without having its own mobile ecosystem.

As everybody knows already, Windows 10 Mobile has already been retired, so Microsoft’s betting big on Android and iOS to remain a key player in the mobile industry.

On Android, Edge comes with advanced features like sync support with the desktop, so technically, you are able to begin browsing on your PC and then continue from where you left off on the mobile and the other way around.

More recently, Microsoft has introduced another important change for Edge on Android, but this time, it’s not necessarily a new feature but something that paves the way for more big changes coming to the mobile browser. It’s an experimental flags section that allows users to try out new ideas in advance before they are released to everyone in testing builds of the app.

Also known as edge://flags, this screen allows users to enable new features in the very early days, and such capabilities have been around in desktop browsers for quite some time. But with the update to version 45.06.24.5042 on Android, Microsoft Edge now comes with an experimental flags screen too, which is living proof that the company is already planning in the long term on Google’s mobile OS.

Such a screen in Microsoft Edge is a win-win update. First and foremost, Microsoft can collect feedback on the new features it tests, which means the company gets more time to find bugs and fix them before new updates are pushed to users on production devices. And second of all, users themselves can try out new features much earlier, which for so many people is something that they absolutely love.

Of course, Edge still has a long way to go before it can become the preferred browser on mobile, but Microsoft just wants to use its browser to keep more users tied to its ecosystem. And with the company investing more aggressively in the Android world, including with its very Surface Duo device, it’s very clear this is a critical part of its long-term strategy. For the time being, however, Edge is evolving on all platforms where it’s available, and sooner or later, it can finally become the worthy Android browser that Google Chrome didn’t actually need.

Webmasters / Windows 10 Gets An Official Microsoft App To Recover Accidentally-deleted Files by kennywesmont: 2:09pm On Jun 29, 2020
Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 app that lends users a hand when they’re trying to recover files that they deleted by accident.

Called Windows File Recovery Tool, the new app is published in the Microsoft Store and is specifically supposed to look after mistakenly-removed files, including photos, documents, and pretty much anything else.

According to the description published in the Microsoft Store, the app also supports external storage devices, such as microSD cards.

“Accidentally deleted an important file? Wiped clean your hard drive? Unsure of what to do with corrupted data? Windows File Recovery can help recover your personal data,” Microsoft says.

“Recovering from a camera or SD card? Try Signature mode, which expands beyond NTFS recovery and caters to your storage device needs. Let this app be your first choice for helping to find what you need from your hard drive, SSD (*limited by TRIM), USB drive, or memory cards.”
Windows 10 version 2004 required

What you need to know, however, is that this little yet super-useful app comes as a command-line utility, so it doesn’t ship with a GUI.

While beginners might have a hard time figuring out how to use it, Microsoft has put together a comprehensive support page where everyone can find more information about the app and the commands that can be used for recovering deleted files.

For example, if you’re trying to recover a file that was stored on the C: drive and move it to a recovery folder that’s stored on a separate drive called E:, the following command must be used:
winfr C: E: /n \Users\<username>\path\filename.extension
The app can only be used on Windows 10 version 2004 and newer – this is the May 2020 Update that is now rolling out to users gradually, so unless your device hasn’t received the update, you shouldn’t be able to install the app from the Store.
Webmasters / Linux Mint 20 “ulyana” Officially Released by kennywesmont: 2:02pm On Jun 29, 2020
The stable version of Linux Mint 20 is now available for download, and as expected, the rollout includes the typical Xfce, MATE, and Cinnamon ISO images.

Linux Mint 20, which is codenamed Ulyana, is a long-term support version, so it’ll receive support until 2025. And needless to say, it comes with massive improvements that include linux-firmware 1.187 and the Linux kernel 5.4.

But what’s being described as “the star of the show” in this release is Warpinator, an application that allows sharing files across a network and which is described as a modern successor to Giver.

Originally implemented in Linux Mint 6, Giver was an app that made file sharing between computers fairly simple as it allowed users to send and receive files with just a drag and drop and without the need for additional software or configurations.
Snapd disabled by default

“Warpinator is a reimplementation of Giver. Server configuration (FTP, NFS, Samba) is overkill for casual file transfers between two computers, and it’s a real pity to use external media (Internet services, USB sticks, external HDDs) just to share files when there’s a local network which could do just that,” the Linux team explains.

This new release also brings improved support for NVIDIA Optimus and an NVIDIA ON-Demand profile. The system tray section has received additional refinements in all three versions of Linux Mint, as the dev team focused on harmonizing the entire experience and providing users with more straightforward icons.

Gdebi has received a new UI, Apturl returned to Aptdaemon from Synaptic, while Snapd is disabled by default, with APT packages not allowed to install it.

Like every new release, Linux Mint 20 comes with visual refinements too, so you get new wallpapers and additional improvements here and there, including a tweaked welcome screen and new folder icons.
