According to PDP, the Buhari-led administration is just paying lip service to the issue of diversification of the economy. The party said this while reacting to a recent comment by the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, that the only way Nigeria can get out of this present economic recession is to diversify the economy and also maintain fiscal discipline. Read the party's statement signed by its Director, New Media, Deji Adeyanju, below.... "Yesterday, the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, stated that the Muhammadu Buhari administration will focus on two policies to remove Nigeria from recession- fiscal discipline & diversification. Firstly, we believe a recession is not reversed by diversification. A recession is reversed by implementing a stimulus package designed to cut taxes, reduce the cost of doing business & boost spending on infrastructure & other critical sectors of the economy. Available data shows that the Buhari administration has spent a meagre 19% of the allocation for CAPEX in #Budget2016. This sort of spending will not make any sort of impact on the economy. Assuming but not conceding that Mrs Adeosun is right, the challenge is the past 15 months show that despite the glib talk the Buhari administration is doing neither. For instance, despite claims of weeding out ghost workers from the payroll & reducing the civil service wage bill, Nigeria’s wage bill increased from N1.65tr in 2014 to N1.83tr and N1.71tr in 2015 & 2016 respectively. These figures represent a combined total increase of N240bn from the wage bill in 2014. Two days ago, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) released its economic report for Q2 2016 which showed that the FG incurred a N1.09tr deficit for the quarter. This deficit was 96% higher than the N555.49b allowed. Total expenditure for this period stood at N1.76 trillion, surpassing the provisional quarterly budget estimate by 12.8%, representing a 58.1% increase of the Q1 expenditure.

Amidst public angst over the appalling state of the economy under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari which has been officially confirmed to be in recession, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said its hands are clean. The party rather asked Nigerians to blame the current economic mess on former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan, whom it accused of plundering the country’s resources for 16 years. APC said the three leaders, who ruled under the platform of the now-turned opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), had the golden opportunity to turn the economy around, but wasted it. Reacting yesterday in Abuja to the PDP’s call on Buhari to resign over his poor performance, the APC said that the party lacked the credibility and rectitude to make such a call. The PDP had, while reacting to the declaration of economic recession by the Presidency, demanded that the President resign his position for leading Nigeria into the crisis. In a statement issued by the APC National Secretary, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, the ruling party assured Nigerians that the Buhari administration remains committed to resuscitating the economy in the quickest possible time and in the interest of the people. The party reinstated its commitment to returning Nigeria into a strong economic nation, regretting that it met an already battered economy which was handed over to it by the past PDP administration. “The statement by the PDP is the latest in the party’s insensitive plot to deflect attention from the ‘voodoo’ economics and reckless fiscal policies the country was subjected to during its 16-year rule. or the umpteenth time, the PDP lacks the moral basis and credibility to comment or condemn the government on the economy after the mess it left behind. Instead, the PDP must apologise to Nigerians. “The warning signs were glaring to the immediate-past administration but it chose the path of economic sabotage by looking the other way and squandering the country’s commonwealth – a reckless decision that has brought the country to its knees.

Many Nigerian past and current lawmakers might land in serious trouble as the Federal Government has started compiling the list of legislators in both chambers of the National Assembly over constituency projects earmarked for them in the 2014 and 2015 budgets, which were not executed. The lawmakers, if found guilty will be forced to cough out the millions they might have diverted for personal gains. Punch reports that the sum of N100bn was earmarked for constituency projects in each of the 2014 and 2015 budgets and the the worth of constituency projects totalled N200bn for the two years.
