The recent ban on use of Tinted Glasses for all car owners by the Inspector General of Police appears to be a grand plan by the Police authorities to extort nigerians. While I'm not engaging on any campaign of calumny against the police, or trying to dent their already battered image, I feel it is necessary to share my experience for others to learn. I also believe comments on these forum could cause a change, given that we are all stakeholders in the nigerian project. Besides, the power of the social media has proven to be a veritable tool in correcting societal ills in Nigeria. I have observed that since the ban by the IGP, policemen across the country have embarked on an aggressive enforcement of the ban. My nasty encounter with the Police occurred on Sunday 10th April, 2013, when I was accosted on the road by a team of policemen, on grounds that I was driving a tinted vehicle. All efforts to explain to them that my vehicle has a factory fitted tinted wind shields fell on deaf ears. Eventually, I was taken to the Police station, following my refusal to part with N2,000 demanded by the police. My vehicle was taken into custody and d DPO told me that it would only be released upon the issuance of a tint permit. He explained that I could only get the permit from the IGP at the force headquarters in abuja. The saddest part of the story played out, when I arrived the force headquarters to obtain the permit on Monday 11th April, 2013. There, I was told I would pay N25,000 to obtain the permit! To my consternation, the policemen on duty attended to about 5 persons who paid the money without even inspecting their cars or do any other thing. All they were interested in was the money. I surreptitiously interviewed some gullible policemen, who revealed to me that unless I pay up, I won't get the permit. I was told over 20 people had come to pay that day! Can u imagine the amount? People, the salient questions to ask are these; why should we pay to obtain these permits? If the reasons for the ban are security related, why would police authorities collect money and issue permit without any security check on the vehicle or the owner? Can the pronouncement of the IGP naturally become a law without legislation? Is the pronouncement by IGP a subtle ban on the importation of cars with factory fitted tinted cars? Is the Police force a revenue generating outfit or security outfit? Where will these monies go to? I think the time has come for us to generally stand up against these criminal acts in this country. I know a lot of commentators will try to be funny, but I sincerely feel it is very improper. I know I'm not the only one that has suffered unjustly over this tinted glass brouhaha brought about by the IGP, but I think it is condemnable. This is just my experience. I would like other nairalanders to share their own experiences here. Thanks! |

Former Derby County, Plymouth and Inter Milan defender Taribo West has been accused of lying about his age. The former Nigeria centre half, now retired, joined Serbian team Partizan Belgrade in 2002 after leaving Derby County and told club bosses he was 28. But now the ex-president of Partizan, Zarko Zecevic, has accused him of lying, saying the defender was actually 40. Accusation: Taribo West was 40 - not 28 as he claimed - when he played for Partizan Belgrade, according to the club's former president Zarko Zecevic Ram raider: West (right) challenges Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink while playing in the Premier League for Derby County 'He joined us saying he was 28. We only later found out he was 40, but he was still playing well so I don’t regret having him on the team,' Zecevic said. But according to the Croatian media, the former defender known for his colourful hairstyles also lied when trying to join Croatia’s Rijeka club. At the age of 44, they said West told club doctors he was only 32. It was only after an examination that the doctors raised suspicions with the club because West’s knees suggested he was older. He wasn’t signed to the team but later joined Plymouth and then Iranian side Paykan FC, where he ended his career at the age of 46 in 2008. Today his Wikipedia entry says he is 39. Milan spells: West made his name with Inter Milan but also played a few games for rivals AC Milan |
kenzspunpy: I lay the blame squarely at the foot of the NYSC authorities! What was the main objective of the scheme? Is it not to instil para-military training into young graduates and also foster national integration? Where on earth do u see para-military outfits wear hijabs or skirts? For the authorities to have allowed hijabs, based on religious grounds, they should allow skirts based on same grounds. Period! In fact, if my faith says I should go naked, so be it!! TechyGuy: Bruv, don't mind those who don't have facts and just talking! I do not support the doctrine the lady held but that she could sacrifice NYSC for her faith, mehn! she deserves commendation for her faith! I am challenged! kenzspunpy: I lay the blame squarely at the foot of the NYSC authorities! What was the main objective of the scheme? In fact, if my faith says I should go naked, so be it!!See what I'm saying? Is this a paramilitary scheme or show of shame? For me, the aim of the scheme is defeated. Infact, I think government should just scrap the shit and substitute it with a 2 week skill acquisition and vocational training. After the training, a lump sum of money, say 350k should be given to each participants to go and start life. Afterall, NYSC claims to expend about 400k for feeding, camping, allowances, and provision of kits for a corp member. By so doing, federal government will be proud to say they are empowering young graduates in the country. Rather than continue with this shame, which is even leading to deaths of innocent minds. My fifty cents o |

But I think the authorities got it wrong by not setting standards required of the scheme. Rules should be rules. If u can't abide by the rules, then don't go for youth service. To bend for one is to bend for all. NYSC should sort this mess by coming out with standard rules and guidelines required of the scheme. It's as simple as that.... |
