Arsenal faced Newcastle and it was an exciting watch for football fans. Liverpool fans would have been praying for Arsenal to drop points, but Mikel Arteta’s men were too strong for Newcastle. The Gunners are now 2 points within reach of last season's champions and will take a massive confidence boost after a 2-1 win at St James’ Park.

It was an action packed game that made fans sit on the edge of their seats, the first half especially had a lot to offer. Arsenal played beautiful football, restricting Newcastle to few chances at home. Any football fan knows St James' park is a tough place to earn points and Newcastle definitely made Arsenal work for it.

The Gunners were behind by half-time, but that score-line was not a clear representation of the first half. Arsenal were brilliant, created chances and if not for some impressive goalkeeping, reverse should have been the case. A misplaced pass from Mosquera caused a corner which Newcastle capitalized from. Although the goal was not entirely his fault. Gabriel also plays part in it. The Brazilian defender overplayed a push from the back thinking it would result in a foul, but all it did was open up space for Nick Woltemade to head in a goal. That goal was only what separated both teams at half-time.

Nick Pope’s heroic saves kept Newcastle in the game. The final result would have been different if not for the brilliance of the Newcastle goalkeeper. Unfortunately, he was beaten twice by headers from Mikel Merino and Gabriel. Newcastle fans will feel hard done by the score-line. Though they lost, they will keep their head up because they could feel the players giving everything for the club.

Gabriel’s match winning header means Arsenal are now two points behind Liverpool on the league table. He redeemed himself after an error on his part and score a late winner to keep his team in the title race. Arsenal face Olympiacos midweek in the Champions League, then up next will be West Ham; with a new manager at the helm, Nuno Espirito Santos.

The Blues are currently going through a rough patch. Enzo Marseca’s men have dropped points again in the Premier League against Brighton at Stamford Bridge. Although Chelsea have dropped points, they have always managed to still end the game with a point. Even at that game, there were spells where Chelsea looked like the team in League One and Lincoln were the Premier League team.

SO WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO CHELSEA?

Coming into this season, no Chelsea fan would have been able to predict this disastrous start to the campaign. The Blues are currently one point behind Manchester United on the league table. A Manchester United that has been a laughing stock for the past couple of months. Here are a couple reasons for the bad results;

NO DEFENCE

Chelsea are struggling in the defensive department. Since the injury to their main man at the back, Levi Colwill, Chelsea have conceded easy goals and are yet to find worthy replacements. Colwill plays a specialist role in the Chelsea backline and his absence has been massively felt. The Chelsea sporting directors also chose not to bring in any Colwill replacement, believing they have enough in the squad to make up for his absence. Tosin has proven to be unable to handle the complexities of that role, causing a couple mistakes which the opponents have exploited.

Wesley Fofana can not seem to keep fit. His injury record has kept him out of the squad and now he is set to miss a couple more games to the concussion. Josh Acheampong is still too young and lacks the experience needed to handle that role. Granted, he has been excellent whenever called upon, but he always seems to be one pass or one touch away from making an error leading to a goal.

Jorrel Hato was brought in to be a substitute for Cucurella. Yes he can play as left-centre back, his main strength is in the fullback position. And he has not done anything worthy enough to hold the centre-back position. Enzo Marseca now finds himself in a situation where he has to pick the best center-back pair for Trevor Chalobah, but all candidates are not up to the level required for the position.

Asides from finding a Colwill replacement, the mistakes from these Chelsea sides have been enormous. Not something you should expect from a side that wants to compete at this elite level. Malo Gusto has made some mistakes in the past few games that saw him dropped to the bench. Robert Sanchez did not help matters by collecting a red card in the Manchester game. Enzo Fernandez’s pass was what led to Lincoln City’s goal in the EFL. And Trevor Chalobah’s red card gave Brighton the helping they needed to turn the game around.

The mistakes are becoming a regular occurrence in this Chelsea team. But it is expected considering how young some of these players are. The sporting directors have a model and are sticking to it; young players with tons of potential, low wage bills. Sadly, they can not buy experience for these young players. It is something that will have to be earned with matches. Will this pay off in the long run? Of course it will. Chelsea has one of the best projects in the business. No doubt there are TITLES in the future. But Chelsea fans are used to victory. They want to win now. Can they wait till these players are ready? Only time will tell.

The fixtures certainly are not doing Chelsea any favours. Up next they face Jose Mourinho’s Benfica, who will be licking their lips at the sight of this Chelsea defence. And afterwards, Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, a game no one will expect them to win.

The Premier League has gotten way tougher because mid-table clubs have also invested smartly and recruited exciting talents. ST: Marc Guiu is expected to lead the lines for Chelsea. He has barely seen any minutes since his recall from loan. This is a perfect opportunity to get some minutes into his legs. With Delap being out injured, a good performance here will give regular minutes in the first team.

AM: Willian Estevao was sacrificed on the weekend after Chelsea went down to 10 men. Sadly he could not showcase his talents against Man U just yet, but will be seeing this as an opportunity to let the fans know what they are missing out on.

LW: Tyrique George also has not seen a lot of minutes since his move to Fulham failed in the transfer window. He has made appearances as a sub, but hardly used as a starter. Maresca will definitely use him considering he rates the player highly.

RW: Alejandro Garnacho can play on either flanks. He must have been looking forward to playing against his former club at the weekend, but Marseca decided to leave him out because he Fofana asked to be changed.

CM: Facundo Buonanotte could play an unfamiliar role in this match. His best role is behind the striker, but considering a lack of midfield options, Maresca might have him try out the “Enzo Fernandez” role. Romeo Lavia or Andrey Santos would have been perfect, but one is still nursing an injury and Santos might fill in for Caicedo.

DM: Andrey Santos is best placed to play the Caicedo role. Caicedo deserves to get some rest considering the amount of games he has had to juggle. Santos has proven he is comfortable playing in the front of the backline, so it should not be a difficult one for Marseca to play him as a 6.

LB: Jorrel Hato was brought in to be a replacement for Marc Cucurella. He has made some appearances here and there, but nothing stands out as of yet. Hopefully he can make good use of this opportunity and start contesting for his spot on the first team.

CB: Josh Acheampong is seen as an understudy to Levi Colwill. He definitely still has a lot to learn but the academy graduate has performed well whenever given a chance to play. A clean sheet and full 90 minutes will be viewed as a win in his book.

CB: Wesley Fofana could partner up Acheampong in the backline. But he was asked to be subbed during the Man U game, so Maresca will keep an eye on him and quickly make substitutions at the sign of any discomfort. Given his history record, it is hard to see him play the entire match.
