Elon Musk absolutely hated this one thing about Steve Jobs By Matthew Dunn | news.com.au File photo: Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk smiles as he attends a forum on startups in Hong Kong, China January 26, 2016. (REUTERS/Bobby Yip) File photo: Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk smiles as he attends a forum on startups in Hong Kong, China January 26, 2016. (REUTERS/Bobby Yip) When you are a billionaire tech mogul it’s hard to not be compared to those that came before. Take Tesla chief executive Elon Musk for example. The philanthropist often receives parallels between his life and that of the fictional Marvel character Tony Stark. And then there is the suggestion that he is the second coming of Steve Jobs. Although Musk is not overly thrilled by either comparison, the latter is more concerning. Not because he doesn’t respect the Apple founder’s legacy — rather his fashion sense. In a revealing interview with Rolling Stone published Wednesday, Musk talked about a time he was asked to wear a black turtleneck, which was the famous trademark of Jobs, during a photoshoot. FILE - In this Jan. 15, 2008, file photo, Apple CEO Steve Jobs holds up the new MacBook Air after giving the keynote address at the Apple MacWorld Conference in San Francisco. Apple on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011 said Jobs has died. He was 56. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu, File) (AP) He was not impressed. “If I was dying and I had a turtleneck on, with my last dying breath, I would take the turtleneck off and try to throw it as far away from my body as possible,” he explained. Musk didn’t dwell on the fashion choices of millionaires for too long, with the interview quickly turning to his concerns for the dangers of artificial intelligence. “Climate change is the biggest threat that humanity faces this century, except for AI,” he said. “I keep telling people this.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom, with Musk giving insight into what drives him. “I try to do useful things,” he explained. “That’s a nice aspiration. And useful means it is of value to the rest of society. Are they useful things that work and make people’s lives better, make the future seem better, and actually are better, too? I think we should try to make the future better.” And what does Musk view as better? “It would be better if we mitigated the effects of global warming and had cleaner air in our cities and weren’t drilling for vast amounts of coal, oil and gas in parts of the world that are problematic and will run out anyway,” he said. “And if we were a multiplanetary species, that would reduce the possibility of some single event, man-made or natural, taking out civilisation as we know it, as it did the dinosaurs. “There have been five mass-extinction events in the fossil record. People have no comprehension of these things. Unless you’re a cockroach or a mushroom — or a sponge — you’re f***ed.” |
This Is the Real Reason the Coca-Cola Logo Is Red BY BROOKE NELSON Hint: It has to do with booze. The-Real-Reason-the-Coca-Cola-Logo-is-Red_570538087_tok-anas TOK ANAS/SHUTTERSTOCK Coca-Cola and the color red go together like peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, or tacos and Tuesdays. After all, we would recognize that iconic red label anywhere. But why did the company choose this shade for its logo in the first place? Some claim that the red color came from one of the company’s first advertisements, which featured Santa wearing his famous red-and-white suit and holding a Coke bottle. But according to the Coca-Cola Company, its famous logo dates back to the very beginning of the brand itself. (You might be surprised by the quirky, secret messages hidden in famous company logos, too.) Over 130 years ago, Coca-Cola was sold in barrels at American drug stores and pharmacies. Alcohol was distributed in the same way. But while alcohol was taxed at the time, soft drinks were not. So, the Coca-Cola Company began painting its barrels red in order to help customs and tax officials distinguish them from barrels of booze. The shade stuck—and the rest is history. Now, “You see a red disc icon on a storefront, and you know that you’ll be able to get delicious, ice-cold Coca-Cola there,” Ted Ryan, a Coca-Cola archivist, said. “It became a promise in a way.” You won’t find this beverage’s famous hue in any Pantone color registries, though; it is actually a combination of three different shades of red. The logo’s typography, on the other hand, is an official font. Called “Spencerian,” it has been associated with the brand since the 1900s. That said, the Coca-Cola label hasn’t always looked the same as it does today. Find out what other famous company logos looked like when they were young. eo

But cars are running on all kinds of stuff these days, right? Like electricity, and so on? That’s what I hear. It’s worth a try to put Coke in the tank, in case gas prices go up and we all get desperate. Recent Videos from Jalopnik This Is The First Up-Close Look At The Best-Looking Upcoming Three-Wheeler EV You've Ever Seen Jason Torchinsky 104 Thank goodness that YouTuber TechRax, who regularly destroys technology and other items in strange ways, tried this experiment for us in the name of science and alternative fuels. Who needs Elon Musk and Tesla when you have a person like this around, willing to serve the people and the planet in a 2003 BMW 325i wagon instead of all of these fancy new “electrified” cars? Let’s all watch how his brave experiment, which appears to have happened on public roads, went: Darn. That repair bill looks large, too. Who would have thought that putting something other than gas in a gasoline engine wouldn’t go well? ADVERTISEMENT Well, it was worth a try. 25 Beautiful Girl Names Nobody Has Used (Yet) by Ashley Wehrli – on Aug 11, 2018 in Baby Names There are pros and cons to choosing a name that is so unique. The pro is that the child will go through life as a true individual. They'll be a person who has a name that no one ever hears, and everyone will marvel at. The downfall is often that the name will be misspelled or mispronounced often which would lead to a lot of corrections. This list may not be for everyone, and we are well aware that names are getting more and more out there every day, but that is not always a bad thing. There are parents out there who are always looking to stand out among the crowd and bless their baby with a name that is unique. Well we have names that are so unique that they are practically unheard of. These names are so unique that they are bound to have everyone talking and asking where parents thought of these names. Most of them will not have those more traditional places of origin or meanings, but they are inspired by people, places or things. I swear, I did not make up these names. We have found 25 of the most beautiful names for little girls that no one has ever used or heard of, until now. CONTINUE SCROLLING TO KEEP READING Click the button below to start this article in quick view START NOW SHARE TWEET ADVERTISING 25 MAZIKEEN Most of the names on this list will not be found on regular baby name websites that mom and dad would visit on their great search for a name for their baby girl. This means they won’t have your traditional place of origin or meaning. They also won’t be on the list of popular baby names. The name Mazikeen is a very original name and it would suit a very original baby girl. The name was heard on the popular TV show, Lucifer. It is the name of a beautiful demon. It is the perfect name for parents who want to follow a sci-fi theme for their baby. 24 CURIE ADVERTISING This name is not completely unheard of, but it is not hear very often and it is often used as a last name. The name is pronounced CURE-y. The inspiration for this name comes from the very well known Polish physicist Marie Curie. She is an amazing woman to be named after, as she is seen as one of the most prominent female scientists that ever lived. She won the Nobel prize, not once but twice and was the first female professor at the University of Paris. It is always great to use such a strong namesake when naming your daughter as a way of keeping on the legacy. 23 FURIOSA Furiosa is a name that is very unusual but has a beautiful sound to it. The name is thought to belong to the strongest girls out there due to where the inspiration comes from for this name. This name was heard in the move Mad Max: Fury Road and it was the name of the character played by Charlize Theron. The character is brave, strong, and is thought to take no prisoners. Again, the only problem is that some people may have a hard time pronouncing this name and may need some help. 22 MILLION ADVERTISING If you are a parent who thinks your daughter is one in a million this may be the name for you. The name is reminiscent of other names such as Millie or Millicent, but it has its own unique flair to it that makes it amazingly beautiful. Everyone deserves to feel like a million bucks, and what easier way than giving your little girl the name that means million. It is sure to set her up for a life of good fortune and happiness. 21 EZRIA Ezria is on this list and it may be due to the fact that there is the popular male counterpart to this name, Ezra. Ezra has been on the rise for baby boy names, so it only makes sense to have an equivalent for the little girls in the world. If anyone is a fan of teen TV shows than they are probably familiar with the show Pretty Little Liars. This name is the result of mixing two of the main characters names together. Ezra and Aria are two characters that are crowd favourites, and when you can’t pick just one, you just combine them! 20 PIPPI ADVERTISING There are a lot of names that were once considered unique that are finding themselves becoming quite popular. The name Piper is rising as each day goes by when it comes to names for our little girls. The name Pippi is a great alternative. The name is of course a shout-out to the novel Pippi Longstocking. Pippi Longstocking is a novel that was written by Astrid Lindgren and was first published in England in 1950. It has taken until now for the name to catch on with the public. Pippi Longstocking was a spunky little girl who was full of wonder and adventure. 19 BLESSENCE It takes a special kind of person to want to name their baby one of these unique and never heard before names, and that is because in this (cruel) world we live in there are sometimes going to be a lot of negative reactions to the names. The name Blessence is another instance where two words were combined. Bless and Essence have found themselves in a mash-up to create this unique and beautiful name for little girls. It embodies two things that will empower them for the rest of their lives. FEATURED TODAY 25 NAMES FRESH OUT OF MYKONOS 25 NAMES SO PERFECT MOMS WONDER WHY THEY DIDN’T THINK OF THEM (PART 2) ADVERTISING 18 MELANIN ADVERTISING Another downfall of having a name that is very unique and out there is that there will be a lack of souvenirs at gift shops bearing your child’s name. You can always have something made. A common trend right now is taking words and making them names. Melanin is the name of the pigment in our eyes, hair and skin. There was a model who had earned the nickname ‘Melanin Goddess’ due to her beautiful and unique skin colour. It is a word that means beauty essentially and can make any girl feel good in her own skin. 17 FRANKLYNN If you are looking for a stylish name that will definitely grab everyone’s attention, then this is the name for you. The name is obviously a play on the male name Frank or Franklin, but it has a -Lynn ending which is proving to be very popular. The best thing about this name is that there are many variations of nicknames that parents can choose from to call their little one. They can go with Fran, Frankie or Lynn and all of them are just as adorable as the last. 16 VERSAILLES ADVERTISING If mom and dad are looking for a name that is very unique and has a touch of an exotic feel to it that Versailles may be the perfect choice. Names that start with a V are not too common as it is, and this one is beautiful, and its namesake is a paradise. The name comes from a beautiful French palace that has amazing gardens and stunning architecture. It has always had a sense of regal class to it and is sure to make your little one stands out in a crowd. 15 ZEPLYN Is mom or dad a rocker? Do they love the sound of that classic rock and want to carry on the legacy with their little girl? Perhaps in hopes to inspire them to love the same kind of music and they can all rock out together on family road trips? If this is the case than the name Zeplyn may be perfect. The inspiration for this name comes from the classic rock group Led Zeppelin, but it has been altered so that the spelling is a bit more feminine. Also, think of how cute the nickname ‘Zep’ would be! 14 ISEULT ADVERTISING Another big trend in today’s world of baby names is to change or alter the spelling of one name to give it a completely different look. This can be a bit confusing to people around you, and you may find yourself having to explain how to pronounce it. This name is pronounced the same as the name Isolde, it just has a different spelling. The inspiration for this name comes from the second most star-crossed lovers in all of the literary world. It comes from Tristan and Isolde from Arthurian legend. 13 LANIAKEA This one may be a bit confusing and will definitely need some explaining, but if mom and dad are up to the task it may be the perfect name for their little girl. Most of the names on our list have come from characters on TV, novels and historical figures, but this name comes to us all the way from space. Laniakea is a supercluster of galaxies where earth is located. This means that Laniakea is actually our home. It is also the name of an Oahu beach and it means “immense heaven.” That just sounds divine. 12 CALIBER ADVERTISING Caliber is a name that follows a trend in names for little boys, but that doesn’t mean that it can not be used for little girls as well. More and more names are changing to become unisex, and we are quickly learning that there are no rules when it comes to what we choose to name our baby. If you love the idea of this name for your little girl but have a bit of worry that the world will not see her as a little girl until she is older, you can always fall on the nickname Callie until she grows into her powerful name. 11 THATCHER Thatcher is another name that has long been thought of as just a name for little boys, but it is another name that is slowly crossing over to be used as a name for a sweet little girl. Remember, there are no rules when it comes to names and all that matters are that mom and dad love it and feel like it suits their little girl. Those who are familiar with British politics may also recognize this as the last name of one of the most iconic prime ministers of England, Margaret Thatcher. 10 LAGERTHA ADVERTISING If you are wondering why this name seems so familiar it is because the inspiration for this name comes from the popular TV show, Vikings. It is a Norse name that signifies power, beauty and strength. It has become more popular since the discovery that one of the most powerful Viking warriors was actually a woman. The name also has an exotic sound to it, and it has the ability to just roll off the tongue when it is said. It is bound to get all the moms at the mom group talking. 9 HESTIA The only question we have about this name is why it took people so long to notice how sweet and beautiful it is. The name is taken from the Greek goddess of hearth and domesticity. In Greek mythology, Hestia was the big sister of Zeus. The name was only just registered as an American baby name last year, and it may take a while before it reaches any point of popularity, which is fantastic news for anyone looking for a real unique baby name. 8 ANAKIN I am sure we have come Star Wars fans in the house, and they will definitely appreciate that we have a Star Wars inspired name on our list. Anakin did turn out to be a villain in the movie series, but before that he was an inventive and brave young man. He was so brave that people are giving this name to their little girls. The name can also be shortened to form the cute nickname, Ani until your little one has grown into a young lady. 7 VERUCA If you grew up in the 80’s and 90’s you are probably wondering where you have heard this name from. The name Veruca is inspired by a spoiled little girl from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. A beloved book by Roald Dahl and then a very well-received movie. Don’t let the character inspiration ruin this name for you, it was also the name of a popular band in the 90’s who tore up the dance floor with their hit music. 6 LINUX ADVERTISING The name Linux is not a name that anyone hears very often, and it may not even be ranked as a baby name in the US as of right now. It would take a lot of parents naming their child this to get it on someone’s radar. It is a unique name because it contains the letter ‘x’ which is not a very common letter to be found in a name. It appears as if this name is a twist on the name Lennox, but parents wanted to make it just a little bit more unique. 5 ZULY Zuly is a beautiful name that you don’t hear very much but it is one that deserves respect. It is also one of the few names on our list that has a place of origin and meaning. The name is the short form of the name Zulma which is Arabic in origin and it means “healthy, vigorous.” A beautiful meaning. The name also has no place on a ranking list for popularity. All it states is that the name dropped another 13% in popularity this week. 4 OCEANA ADVERTISING If mom and dad love the water and everything to do with it, then this is the perfect name for you that no one is even thinking about using. The name actually has roots in Greek origin and it means “ocean.” The ocean is deep, strong and mesmerizing which is the perfect meaning for a little girl. As of 2017, the name was not ranked when it came to popularity meaning it is not in the top 1000 but it did rise slightly this week, so it may be on the way to the top. 3 EMPRISS This is another example of parents taking one name and altering the spelling of it to make a completely different and absolutely unique name for their baby. The name is listed as a word name, so it has no official place of origin. It also means “female ruler of an empire, consort of an Emperor.” Sounds pretty good to me that our little girls name would mean ruler of some sorts as we want them to rule the world. The name is not listed on any popularity chart, so it is definitely one-of-a-kind. 2 NIXON |
