THE real reasons President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat in the 28 March presidential election even before its result was officially announced have been revealed to Sunday Tribune.
According to an insider who disclosed how the final decision that led to President Jonathan congratulating his opponent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, members of the president’s kitchen cabinet and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who were invited to the Presidential Villa, had already read the body language of the president to allow peace to reign.
He also disclosed that elders like Senator Ahmadu Ali, chairman of the presidential campaign team, and PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, played crucial roles in ensuring that the nation was not thrown into crisis.
With the glaring irregularities in the election, particularly the issue of underage voters which was reported live by the Cable News Network (CNN), some elements in the president’s campaign team and PDP, it was revealed, had concluded plans to challenge the results.
“It was for the fact that the president had indicated right from the onset his desire for peace. His campaign mantra has always been that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,” revealed the insider.
According to the source, a meeting of PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) and the campaign organisation with the president was called in the afternoon of Tuesday as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was releasing the result. The meeting was to deliberate on the outcome after it had become apparent that the president would lose.
“A meeting of the campaign organisation and the NWC of the PDP was called that Tuesday afternoon and Ali and Jonathan made their points on the necessity for peace. Ali’s close relationship with Jonathan also helped to create a synergy between the villa and the campaign directorate such that each had the other’s confidence.
“But it was apparent that President Jonathan did not want any violence. In Jonathan’s reckoning, as well as Ahmadu Ali’s, and other elders’, even though there were irregularities in the North and South, the peace and stability of Nigeria were far more important,” explained the source.
Explaining the situation of that Tuesday further, the source revealed that while some of those at the meeting believed that PDP would have real legal cause, the elders and the president thought about the implication, especially the post-election impasse for the country.
“They did not want a repeat of the killings that followed 2011 elections. It was felt that conceding defeat even before the final announcement was made would douse tension and curtail the instantaneous jubilation that could have turned out any way.
“It was also agreed that congratulating the APC and General Buhari ahead of time would also force APC to begin to focus more on the transition and governance, rather than on politicking,” the source said, adding that the situation was critically reviewed but the insistence of the president and elders on peace carried the day.
“All through the campaigns, it would have been noticed that Ali cautioned against use of incendiary words. Ali was never heard using hate language all through the campaign. He helped properly organise and structure the campaign.

President Goodluck Jonathan and his family members have started moving their personal belongings out of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, few days after the President lost his re-election bid,Saturday PUNCHcan authoritatively report.
Our correspondent sighted some buses loaded with travel bags moving out of the President’s official residence at about midday on Friday.
One of the buses, a white 18-seater Hiace bus marked PF 6244 AL, was still being loaded with bags of different shades and sizes at the time of filing this report.
It was not clear at press time where the buses were heading for.
A source said the early removal of the personal effects of the first family might have been necessitated by the need for the renovation of the residence ahead of the May 29 handover date.
For renovation work to commence on time, the President may have to be operating from outside the residence in the days ahead.
Saturday PUNCHalso learnt that the Presidency had commenced a discreet investigation into how a recording of the telephone call by the President to Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on March 31, congratulating him on his victory at the last Saturday’s presidential election was leaked.
The recording which revealed details of what transpired between the two leaders went viral on the Internet on Thursday.
The audio of the conversation credited to one ENDS.ng @EveryNigerian was titled, “Historic congratulatory call from President Goodluck Jonathan to President-elect Muhammadu Buhari on March 31, 2015.”
A government official, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent on Friday that the Presidency was embarrassed by the leaked recording.
While saying that a thorough investigation is underway, the security source said the first step was to ascertain whether the recording was leaked from the Presidency or was made public from the President-elect’s camp.
He said it was only if it was discovered that the recording was leaked from the Presidency that further investigation would be conducted to ascertain those behind it in order to mete out appropriate punishment.
He, however, refused to talk on how long the investigation will take.
“Definitely, unauthorised release of a raw recording of the President’s telephone conversation, if from our (Presidency’s) end is a security breach that cannot go without being investigated,” he said.
The President also promised on Friday to break his silence on his experience in office and other sundry issues at the appropriate time.
He, however, did not give any indication on when the appropriate time will be.
Jonathan made the promise when State House correspondents approached him for interview at the end of the Good Friday Service organised by the Aso Villa Chapel.
“Don’t worry; I will talk to you at the appropriate time,” the President said amid smile as he made his way from the chapel to his official residence.
He was accompanied to the three-hour service that featured the Seven Words of Christ on the Cross by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, and the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Christians Pilgrims Commission, Mr. John Kennedy-Okpara.
The seven short exhortations that accompanied the seven lessons all centred on the sacrifice the preachers said Jonathan made to keep the county united.
They likened Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat in the last Saturday’s presidential election and congratulate the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Congress to the sacrifice Jesus Christ made to save mankind.
All the preachers agreed that the bold step taken by the President at the appropriate time was commendable.
They urged him to remain focused because his future is in the hands of God.
“This man (Jonathan) said here that he is the most criticised President and he prophesied that by the time he will be leaving, he will be the most celebrated President. That has come to pass with the way he is being celebrated worldwide for conceding defeat,” one of the clergymen who led intercessory prayers said.
The service also featured renditions of special hymns as well as intercessory prayers for the President, for peace and for the country at large.
Apart from Dickson and Kennedy-Okpara, the Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Joan Ayo; Managing Director,News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Ima Niboro; and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Power, Ambassador Godknows Igali, also attended the service.
Wife of the President, Patience; and his mother, Eunice, were however absent. Both of them have hitherto been accompanying Jonathan to such service.
The poorly-attended service saw only the first three rows of both sides of the chapel occupied by worshippers.
Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, on Thursday evening admitted that the Peoples Democratic Party had not been able to properly manage its successes.
He said in the last 16 years of being in charge of the country, the party made what he described as “very very costly mistakes.”
Lamido made this position known to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with President Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The governor, whose state is one of the states where Jonathan lost the March 28 presidential election, however did not give details of the mistakes he claimed the party made.
He said, “I am sure if you know the party’s history, what it went through in the last 16 years, it has the capacity to bounce back.
“And more with the elections with pains and the anger, PDP made some mistakes.
“I have been saying so, the party made very very costly mistakes and we have not been able to properly manage our successes. But to me, I don’t think quitting PDP is the answer.”
Reacting to the result of the election that produced Buhari as the President-elect, the governor said whoever becomes the President is a Nigerian President and not a President for a particular region. On the belief that PDP governors who lost their states to opposition did not work hard enough, Lamido warned against going into blame game.
“We won’t go into blame game. In what way will this blame change the attitude of the crowd? Leadership is a very huge burden and is normal for followership to stick in other to look at things from their own perspective,” he said.
Lamido said Nigerians had spoken in very loud and unmistaken ways and so their choice and rights should be respected.
He commended Buhari for his hard-earned victory, while adding that the victory belongs to the nation.
“We praise Buhari for being able to take the ticket from the PDP even though I am not happy, but it’s Nigeria that won, not Buhari.
“None of them lost but Nigeria won and enough of the anxiety, enough of the worry and the fear in Africa,” he added.
While admitting that there is a tendency of the bandwagon effect of the presidential and National Assembly elections rubbing off on the April 11 governorship election, the governor said it was up to PDP leaders to work.
Buhari defeated Jonathan in the March 28 presidential election believed to be the keenest in the political history of Nigeria.
Though pockets of violence were recorded in some polling units in the country, the presidential election was adjudged to be credible.
President Jonathan had congratulated Buhari on his victory in the poll. He was also said to have asked the Peoples Democratic Party not to challenge the outcome of the poll at the election petition tribunal.
Two days before the conduct of the election, Jonathan and Buhari were made to renew their peace accord they signed on February 14 which committed them to credible and violence-free election.
The renewing of the peace accord was initiated by the Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee on 2015 Elections.
President Jonathan had, however, met with some members of the House of Representatives elected on the PDP platform.
It was learnt that the meeting was part of the efforts aimed at resolving the post-primaries crisis in the party.
It was further learnt that the meeting was also meant to avert the impeachment moves against the President by some aggrieved lawmakers.
The meeting which was held inside the new Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja was also attended by the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu; and the National Deputy Chairman, Uche Secondus.
The lawmakers were led to the meeting by the Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha; and the Majority Leader, Mulikat Adeola-Akande.
Apart from Ihedioha who was driven to the venue in his official car, others were driven to and from the venue in two Coaster buses.
None of them spoke with journalists after the meeting.
The President later met with security chiefs in continuation of efforts to tackle insecurity currently being witnessed in parts of the country.

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a herbalist, Akeem Adeniyi, for allegedly abducting his girlfriends, identified simply as Bose and Busayo, with a view to using them for money ritual.
It was gathered that Adeniyi connived with two other suspects ─ Biodun Yusuf and one Raphael, who is still on the run ─ to abduct the victims.
PUNCH Metro learnt that two of the suspects were apprehended after the residents of the Alla-Isin area of Kwara State heard somebody screaming for help in Alla Grammar School at about 11pm on March 11 and rushed to the scene.
It was said that the residents could not find the victim on getting to the scene, but saw a Sienna Space Wagon bus believed to be the property of the people that attracted the residents.
Adeniyi reportedly told them that Busayo was her girlfriend and he was only trying to forcefully have sex with her when she screamed. He was said to have initially declined to reveal her whereabouts.
Police said Adeniyi and his friends were also responsible for the abduction of Bose, who was declared missing on March 19 by her father.
The herbalist, who claimed the second victim was also his girlfriend, reportedly led security operatives to their hideout, where Busayo and Bose were rescued alive.
Our correspondent learnt that the suspects were transferred from Oke-Onigbin Police Division to the Criminal Investigation and intelligence Department in Ilorin for proper investigation.
They were on Wednesday, arraigned before Mr. A.I. Babatunde of the Ilorin Magistrate’s Court for criminal conspiracy, kidnapping and homicide.
The offences, according to the prosecutor, Inspector David Wodi, contravene sections 97 and 274 of the Penal Code.
The charges read in part, “That on March 13, 2015, one Samuel Aboyeji of Baale Compound, Alla-Isin, reported at Oke-Onigbin division that on March 11, at about 11pm, they received information that somebody was screaming for help in Alla Grammar School and they mobilised themselves to the scene where they met one Akeem Adeniyi and one Biodun Yusuf with one Sienna Space Wagon bus and when they asked about the victim, Adeniyi stated that she, Busayo, was his girlfriend and she screamed when he attempted To Molest her.
“On March 19, one Gabriel Neneher also reported that on March 11, his daughter, Bose, also Adeniyi’s girlfriend, is missing.
“Police investigation revealed that you, Adeniyi, a herbalist, criminally conspired with one Biodun Yusuf and one Raphael, now at large, and kidnapped Busayo and Bose to unknown destination for money ritual.”
Wodi prayed the court to remand the defendants in custody pending the completion of police investigation.
The defence counsel, A.I. Telim, however, urged the court to grant bail to his clients, relying on Section 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, which presumed defendants innocent untill proven guilty.
Babatunde, who did not take the plea of the defendants, ordered that they be remanded in prison custody while the investigation continued.

Jonathan so far has about 186,000 votes.
Results from a total of 19 out of the‎ 23 local government areas in the state were turned in as of 2.26pm today(Monday).
Only four local governments are being awaited.

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to charge the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, for election violence.
It also asked the Commission to cancel the election result in Ire-Ekiti over allegation of violence and ballot snatching.
The opposition party based the call on the reported shooting of an APC member, Jide Owolabi, in Ikere-Ekiti, on the alleged order of the deputy governor during Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.
It was gathered that problem started when Eleka, who was moving around the polling units in Ikere Ekiti to monitor the accreditation process was accosted by aggrieved youths who saw his action as violating the electoral law.
It was reported that Owolabi was shot on his buttocks by one of the security operatives attached to the deputy governor during the ensued argument.
The APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, said in a statement on Sunday that the two incidents were well plotted as strategic plan by the Peoples Democratic Party to have undue advantage to win the ballot.
He said, “What happened in Ikere-Ekiti was a pre-meditated incident to cow the opposition to submission. We had earlier raised the alarm to the plan by top officials of Governor Ayodele Fayose’s administration to employ violence and intimidation to cow our members to enable them manipulate the electoral process.
“We wrote the security agencies, including both local and international human rights organs, about PDP’s plan. Yesterday incident was just a manifestation of the fears we raised.
The APC spokesman said the INEC and security agencies should investigate the incident while also asking the electoral body to charge the deputy governor for electoral violence.
Reacting, the Acting Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Joseph Adaraniwon, said the APC was chasing shadows by demanding prosecution of the deputy governor.
He said, “The Deputy Governor cannot be charged for any electoral violence because he did not carry any arms or attack anybody. Instead, it was the APC’s hired thugs that attacked the gentleman. The APC is only making excuses for its defeat in the whole 16 local government areas of the state.”

ABEOKUTA-The Independent National Electoral Commission has released results of Presidential election in 10 local governments in Ogun State.
Out of the results of the 10 local government areas councils released as at 2:pm on Sunday in Abeokuta, All Progressives Congress won seven with wide margin while People’s Democratic Party won th e remaining three local government areas.
The local government areas released so far include Obafemi-Owode, Abeokuta North, Odogboolu, Odeda, Imeko-Afon, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Remo-North, Ewekoro, and Ijebu North-East.

The atmosphere in the maternity centre was serene. There was nothing suggesting the occurrence which took the reporter there. Nurses on duty were courteous but grew cautious and suspicious when it was obvious the reporter was not a patient. Why is he here?
The birth of a new born baby would normally elicit joy and excitement in people. It is more so when the mother has been longing for it without results for years. But, the reverse was the case in a maternity centre (name withheld) situated at Ifosan area of Ilesa, in Osun State where a woman recently gave birth to a baby with two horns on its head.
A tip had given Saturday Tribune photos of the strange baby, the arrival of which caused fear and trepidation among the nurses and the proprietress of the maternity centre. The tip also described the hospital and the geography of its area of operation.
The description was vivid and accurate enough for Saturday Tribune to locate the health centre without much difficulty. Here is the maternity centre where the baby with two horns was born. Then, there was a thick wall of silence. Nurses on duty would neither deny nor confirm the development. The reporter was tossed up and down and finally landed before the proprietress of the centre. She would not talk unless her identity and that of her hospital were protected. The reporter gave his words.
“It is true the baby was born,” she said, but added that the horror of the event compelled her to instruct her staff to keep sealed lips over the development, with a view to warding off public attention to the centre over the scary baby.
Speaking with Saturday Tribune during the visit on Thursday, the proprietress, (she is called matron by her staff) said the woman who gave birth to this deformed baby was “about 25 years old and she has been without a child for three years.”
She explained that “this woman lives in one of the farm settlements on the outskirt of Ilesa. She registered for antenatal service here. So, when she wanted to put to bed, her relatives rushed her here to deliver the baby.
“But we were shocked to the marrow when she eventually delivered the baby with two horns on the head after going into labour for some hours. By the time she was delivered of the baby, it was already dead and we had to separate it from the placenta.
“I have never seen such a terrible creature in my life. So, we helped to pack the dead baby and the placenta and handed them over to them before they left our premises. It was indeed a fearful development and we were saddened about it.

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said Nigeria will go bankrupt in four years if President Goodluck Jonathan is allowed to return for another term.
He said since the rulling Peoples Democratic Party had ruined the nation’s economy, the option left for Nigerians was to vote en masse for the APC, pointing out that victory for the party would ensure freedom.
The candidate spoke on Thursday at the campaign rally of the party in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.
He said, “Victory for the PDP in Saturday’s election will lead to further bankruptcy of the nation’s economy. Vote en masse for the APC. The victory for the party will ensure freedom and liberate the country.
“If we fail to vote and PDP is still in government, Nigeria will go bankrupt in the next four years. This election is election of freedom to liberate Nigerians from the shackles of poverty and misrule.”
Ambode said the present generation should start thinking of, not only themselves, but also of their children and generations to come.
According to him, if Nigerians fail to vote out the present administration at the federal level, they have ruined the future of their children.
He said, “Parents should vote out the PDP for the future of their children. It is not a vote of tribal, religious or ethnic sentiments, we want to vote because of the progress of Nigeria.
“If your children ask for what you have done for the progress of Nigeria, you should be able to tell them how you voted out retrogressive government and replaced it with a progressive one; we must vote the APC at the federal level.”
Present at the event were the Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, his deputy, Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire and members of theAkinwunmi Ambode Kommittee of Friends,among others.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in the state, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, led members of the association to declare their support for Ambode.
Also, a leader of the Alliance for Democracy, Dr. Abimbola Ojora, and some members of the Unity Party of Nigeria, led by its state Chairman, Tunde Osinbajo, defected to the APC.
The RTEAN boss, Mohammed, said the association took the decision based on the good performance of the APC-led government in the state.

The buildings are mixed occupancy. They include 121 and 123 Second Avenue, which house a sushi restaurant and a Belgian restaurant.
Multiple ambulances and a K9 unit have been sent to respond to the incident and authorities have been closing down surrounding streets, concerned about the building collapsing further, the New York Times reported.
A witness named Alexandria told WABC that she was going to have lunch at the sushi restaurant where the explosion may have happened, but decided to get ramen at a restaurant a few doors down. When the explosion happened, she said the glass in the ramen restaurant shook 'like it was rubber'.
She ran outside and saw several people climbing out of the building including a woman who was bleeding profusely from her face. She helped take that woman to the hospital with her boyfriend, and asked them what happened.
The couple said they were eating in the sushi restaurant when a man came in and asked to use the restroom. They say he 'didn't take enough time to use the restroom and then ran out' and that's when the restaurant exploded.
Alexandria said she tried to tell police her story, but was pushed back away from the scene.
Those with family and friends in area have taken to Twitter with worries for their loved ones.
'Freaking out about NYC. My friend lives on that block. He's not replying to me. Does anyone know what blew up? Enzs?' one Twitter user wrote shortly before 4pm.

The wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, says the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) will send her to jail if he is elected.
In a manner typical of a prayer session, Patience, at the Peoples Democratic Party rally in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, invoked the ‘Holy ghost fire’ to consume PDP’s opponents.
Patience also called on the crowd to vote for the PDP at the polls.
Patience, who had earlier entertained the crowd of supporters by dancing to household music tracks such as ‘Kukere’ and ‘Personally,’ said the Goodluck Jonathan-led government was a lover of women and youths in the country and should, therefore, be encouraged to continue.
She said, “I want to warn you not to listen to the All Progressives Congress. The APC does not have materials to match what the PDP has on (the) ground. Their candidate was there in governance initially. What did he do? They only sent your fathers to prison.
“They are planning to even send me to prison. Holy Ghost fire! Holy Ghost fire! Holy Ghost fire! They have nothing to offer. They only say ‘I will’, ‘I will’.
“A train is moving and it has now got to Oyo State. When we talk about train, some of you may have not seen a train before now. The last time a train moved in this country was when I was small and in primary school.
“When my children were small, they asked me what a train was. I had to take them to London and we entered a train from London to Paris. But the PDP government has brought this back to Nigeria. If you want to see train working today, you don’t need to travel again.”
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Jumoke Akinjide, who spoke earlier, said Jonathan deserved to be re-elected because he gave women 35 per cent representation in his cabinet.
She said, “I enjoin the women and youths of Oyo State to vote for our party on Saturday. I have seen a campaign advert by the APC in the newspapers saying ‘God give us men’. But our prayer in the PDP is different. We pray that God gives us men and women.
“Jonathan is the first President in Nigeria to give women 35 per cent. Going by the National Conference report, the President has said that if women have 35 per cent, youths will also have 30 per cent.
“I was looking at the list of the universities set up by this administration, and I saw that one of them was set up even in the hometown of his opponent – Gen. Buhari. I think that if Buhari could not set up a university in his own state, Jonathan has done it and, therefore, deserves to continue.”
Other dignitaries at the event were the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Senator Teslim Folarin, his wife, Angela; wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs. Kemi Mimiko, and the party’s senatorial candidates in Oyo State.
