As the November 16, 2013 gubernatorial election in Anambra State draws nearer, the Paramount Ruler of Onitsha and the custodian of the largest commercial city in West Africa, Igwe Nnanyelugo Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe has endorsed Chief Willie Obiano, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). While receiving the APGA Team led by the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, the Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi and Chief Willie Obiano and other party stalwarts, the traditional ruler commended the party for finally redressing the imbalance in the political leadership of the state by choosing a candidate from the hitherto neglected Anambra North Senatorial District as its flag-bearer. He expressed satisfaction that the loud clamour of his people for equity and fairness in the affairs of Anambra State had begun to receive the desired attention, pointing out that the choice of Obiano was appropriate as the candidate has a very impressive background. The Obi of Onitsha, however, reminded the APGA candidate that the challenge of providing effective leadership to Ndi Anambra was an enormous responsibility which would require extra-effort and divine guidance at every stage of the way. He expressed optimism that Chief Obiano, who is renowned for his technocratic skills in the management of human and natural resources, would rise to the occasion. In his speech, Governor Peter Obi assured Igwe Achebe that he would not relent in his effort to upgrade infrastructure in Onitsha and the surrounding towns in a manner that would position the city as one of the five major cities in Nigeria. Governor Obi also assured the traditional ruler that Chief Obiano was a capable administrator with a vast network of contacts across Nigeria and overseas and would be very comfortable in continuing the revolution that is going on in Anambra State. In his response, Chief Obiano assured Igwe Achebe that he was well aware of the importance of sustaining the momentum of governance that Governor Peter Obi had begun in Anambra State and was adequately prepared to lead the charge. “I come from a background of efficient service and my years of exposure to the best practices in the management of human and natural resources at the highest level in the corporate world have prepared me to continue that great tradition that Governor Obi has started and take it to a higher level,” he declared. Chief Obiano further explained that he had produced a comprehensive blueprint for the accelerated development of the state which he calls The 10-Pillars of Development which effectively covers the key areas that require immediate intervention in the state, quickly adding: “I am aware of my place in history. I consider my involvement in this gubernatorial race a historical call to service. I can assure you and the people of Onitsha and indeed my good people of Anambra State that I will not let you all down. I am a banker. A banker is nothing without his word. I keep my word!” Earlier in his opening remarks, the National Chairman of APGA, Chief Victor Umeh had explained that the party’s choice of Obiano was informed by its belief that the ex-banker has an impressive background and proven competencies that would help sustain the state on its steady march to progress. According to him, Obiano’s past responsibilities have adequately prepared him to appreciate the multi-pronged model of governance that APGA has entrenched in the state which has found interpretation in ANIDS that has totally transformed Anambra into an industrial hub of note in Nigeria, ranking next only to Lagos. http://www.dailytimes.com.ng/article/anambra-election-obi-onitsha-endorses-apga-candidate-obiano |

N1.3B road scam: Imo lawyers want Okorocha probed A group, the Concerned Imo Lawyers Forum (CILF) has described as selective and punitive measures prescribed by the Simeon Iwunze Ad-hoc committee in its report on stoppage/abandonment of some roads in the state. The forum, in its press briefing in Owerri last week called for the probing of the state governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha who it said was indicted by the report but skipped in the punishment prescribed by the House committee. In a release presented at the press briefing by National coordinator of the Concerned Imo Lawyers Forum (CILF), Barr Kissinger Ikeokwu, the group stressed the need for immediate prosecution of the governor and others involved in the messy affairs. The lawyers said, “Our interest is the Imo funds to the tune of N1.3b which has now grown wings under the governor's rescue mission government. “We are now suffering a total division in the impeachment of the Deputy Governor. We are of the view that the move for the impeachment is rather too hasty, we wish the Hon Simeon Iwunze led committee took its time to find out the involvement of all the parties, for a comprehensive work. They cannot give Imo people their report in piece meal”, the group maintained. The forum, feels that the governor of Imo state has also abused his office, by approving the payment of N200m from his office without recourse to the Ministry of Works, Ministry of Finance and the office of the Accountant General leading to the over payment to JPROS International Ltd which is still holding Imo funds for no job done. The forum called on the Attorney General of Imo state, the EFCC and the ICPC to leave up to their offices by commencing investigation and bringing to book Messrs Joseph Dina, JPROS International Ltd, three Brothers concept Nig Ltd and Timik Nig Ltd for diversion of Imo public funds. They stated also that government should immediately suspend Dr Pascal Obi the Principal Secretary to the Governor for complicity in the lose of Imo funds to the tune of N1.3 billion. Furthermore, the CILF asked the Attorney General of the state to commence the prosecution of the state officers involved in the alleged fraud. The concerned Imo lawyers gave a grace of 14 days after which they threatened to go to court to seek recovery of Imo funds. http://www.nigeriahornnewspapers.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1881%3An13b-road-scam-imo-lawyers-want-okorocha-probed&catid=50%3Astate-news&Itemid=54 |

Okorocha’s new ID card project is a scam – Imo workers Civil servants in Imo state may be gearing up for another round of protest against the Imo state government over alleged extortion occasioned by the scandalous cost of producing plastic identification cards (ID cards) for civil/public servants in the state. Some workers who expressed grave concern over the believed unjustifiable cost which would be deducted from their salaries at source, complained that they still had their valid ID cards issued by the same government and could not understand the need for another ID card at such exorbitant rate. In a memo posted on every ministry and parastatal of the Imo state government, the Head of Service, Mrs. Nkechi Onumajulu notified workers of the immediate commencement of deductions from their salaries to cover cost of producing the ID cards. A copy of the memo made available to crimefacts.org dated July 1, 2013 and addressed to all Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Non-Ministerial Departments indicates that the deductions starts with the July,2013 salaries. The document which was signed by Duru A.O. for the State Head of Service requested that, “the deduction at source in one instalment be effected on the July,2013 salaries of Imo civil/public servants to defray the cost of the encoded ID cards as follows: Grade Level 01 – 06 would pay N1000 per ID card Grade Level 07 – 12 would pay N2000 per ID card Grade Level 13 and above would pay N3000 per ID card.” According to the memo, the proceeds of the deduction should r each the office of the Head of Service within 24 hours of the “actualization of the exercise”. However, outraged civil servants have continued to wonder why government would demand N1,000,N2,000 and N3,000 for the production of the same plastic ID card that would cost at most N400 in the open market. An administrative officer, simply identified as Obikwelu queried: “What is the justification for placing three different price tags on the same product and when did employers start demanding employees to pay for their identification card, especially in the civil service?” IMG-20130805-00419 To further aggravate the issue, Ogechi Ololo, the youngest sister to Governor Rochas Okorocha has been fingered as the facilitator and contractor executing the project. Some of the workers who alleged that Ogechi Ololo purchased the ID card printing machine for the project between March and April, 2013 also insist that with the machine which occupies space in her office in the government house, had since started producing ID cards for government house staff. Further investigations by crimefacts.org reveal that renewal and replacement of lost ID cards of Government House personnel executed by Ogechi Ololo was done at the rate of N1,000 and N1,500. Workers lamented that since the advent of civil rule in the country in 1999, this is the first time civil servants have been made to pay for their ID cards and at an exorbitant rate. With a workforce of about 15,000 men and women in the Imo state civil service, it is widely believed that the ID card project is just a racket by the governor to enrich his sister. http://crimefacts.org/okorochas-new-id-card-project-is-a-scam-imo-workers/ |
