As US decides who lead them in a matter of few days from now, I’ve taken ample time to observe the diverse opinions of Nigerians keen about World politics. Without question, two-third majority seems to believe the former Republican President, Donald Trump will defeat his rival, Kamala Harris, the incumbent Vice President from the Democratic Party.

It’s extremely hilarious that most Nigerians are underestimating Kamala Harris on the premise that she’s a woman while Donald Trump being a man will have the day. They are apparently not taking cognizance of the fact that US politics is far more complicated than that of Nigeria, and by that, our mentality can’t be used to judge Americans.

Their citizens value competence over sentiment irrespective of United States indirectly operating Two party system (Democratic & Republican). The United States is not a place where a candidate can ride into office on narrative of “as a man, I’m more capable than my woman opponent”. Below, are part of the reasons why I believe Kamala Harris will have the day come US Presidential election 2024.

Firstly, Trump’s terrible stand on Ukraine. Trump doesn’t have a soft spot for Ukraine who continue to fight off Russia invasion right from time. He’s the only US President alive that backed Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in what he described as “brilliant”. Donald Trump’s action set a dangerous precedent that promotes Putin’s war against US foreign policy. This is not surprising having seized Ukraine the aids granted by congress during his presidency, thus leading to his impeachment when he wanted them to rope his opponent, Joe Biden. His firm promotion of Putin’s war will have a negative tell. Kamala Harris support for Ukraine is ironclad.

Moreso, His threat to pull out of NATO. Donald Trump had consistently threatened to pull out of NATO without a cogent reason. Take it or leave it, NATO is the major tool US is using to contain Russia, her rival in Europe, Eastern part especially. NATO is the reason US have hundreds of military bases around Russia in Europe. NATO is also the reason why US also rake in billions of dollars on ammunition sale from Europe. Attempting to pull out of NATO jeopardizes US influence in Europe and also exposes US allies to Russian threats.

It was that bad that the incumbent President, Joe Biden had to persuade the Congress to strip office of the President power to unilaterally pull out of NATO due to their commitment to their European allies. NATO Countries in Europe had stood behind US on numerous occasions ranging from the 9/11 attack that metamorphosed into US invasion of both Afghanistan and Iraq. They also stood by US during invasion of Libya and liberation of Kosovo from Yugoslavia genocide. US owe their partners loyalty and support for these deeds, hence the reason they won’t promote Donald Trump’s mentality. Kamala Harris support for NATO is unshakable.

Furthermore, Donald Trump’s stand on immigrants will have a negative tell come election on November the 5th, 2024. Trump has a long history of treating immigrants unjustly. He’s never an apologist of immigrants as he have a history of being racist towards them. Trump, during the last presidential debate with Kamala Harris pushed a baseless and sensationalist claim about immigrants eating dogs, cats and other pets of citizens in states like Ohio. This was confirmed ‘untrue’ after fact-check. The US has a substantial numbers of immigrants, and I don’t think they fancy Trump while Kamala Harris has been promoting their interest, seen in her stand on the Mexico borders et all, since her days as a senator.

Moreover, Trump being a Vladimir apologist jeopardizes what Americans want in whosoever occupies the White House as from next year January. Trump as a President worshipped Vladimir Putin as against the precedence of US Presidents’ office. In history of US Presidential office, none of them has ever bowed and romanced Putin like Trump did. Americans don't really like Vladimir Putin as they equally hate their President dealing with him. They've always seen him as a threat due to their nuclear power and how he treats his neighbors in Eastern Europe.

The Helsinki Summit of 2018 which had Democrat, Citizens and his party members, Republican protested against him was one of the most embarrassing moments to the office of US President in history, as Donald Trump showed sheer cowardice when he had press conference with Vladimir Putin the Russian President regarding “2016 election meddling” allegation. Kamala Harris is a direct opposite of this. She had consistently spoke against Putin and taken strong stand against all he does as incumbent US Vice President. With this, she commands the respect and support of many Americans.

To cap it all, His approval rating and stand on health insurance will have a tell too. Preceding the completion of his administration, he had low approval rating, aggravated by how he poorly handled Covid-19 virus that killed 1,219,487 Americans. They didn’t forget till date. Moreso, Trump also attempted to take away affordable health act created by his predecessor, President Barrack Obama. The act gave insurance to people with health conditions ranging from diabetes, HBP, Cancer and the likes. The cost of getting treatment and medications in the US was extremely high hence Obama’s initiative to confront it. Majority of Americans will not back a President that seek to take away their health insurance as against Kamala Harris who continue to promote the initiative.

Come the completion of the November 5th, 2024 US presidential election, I envisage Americans electing their first female President in history. People who analyze from Nigeria like to underestimate her because Trump’s apologists are more visible on media space unlike Kamala’s supporters. Democrats are basically the silent majority in the US as demonstrated in the 2020 elections through their Mail-In votes that took Biden in. As for my prediction, I’m not too certain, but with my assessment, I believe Kamala Harris will defeat Donald Trump.
