Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to dialogue with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to curb the secessionist agitations instead of the deployment of soldiers to the South-East.

Obasanjo said this during an interview with Newsweek Magazine.

Ironically, Kanu, had in the past called Obasanjo an “evil man”.


The former President said, “I don’t see anything wrong in that (Buhari meeting with Kanu). I would not object to that; if anything, I would encourage it.

“I would want to meet Kanu myself and talk to people like him, people of his age, (and ask) ‘What are your worries?’ Not only from the South-East but from all parts of Nigeria.”

Obasanjo, who led the final offensive that brought the civil war to an end in 1970, said he had seen too many wars and it was time for Nigeria to move on.

He said he believed that enough dialogue had not been done by both the government and several groups.

The former President, however, said secession was not the answer.

“Those who fought in the war in Biafra will not want to fight any other war. I fought in that war and it was an unfortunate war and I said I have fought one war too many in Nigeria; I don’t want to see another.

“The heavy boot is not the solution. I believe also whatever may be the frustration of any youth in any part of Nigeria; I believe secession is not the solution.”

The former president, who was also military head of state from 1976–1979, said economic development in the country was the only way to solve the various agitations across the country.

Some Igbo leaders have complained that President Buhari, who hails from northern Nigeria, has prioritized the development of other parts of the country to their detriment.

“We need to satisfy the youth in job creation, in wealth creation, in giving them a better, fulfilled life, in giving them hope for the future. There’s no easy way out,” he said.

18 people have been reported injured including a schoolboy in a failed bucket bomb terror attack on the London Underground during this morning's rush hour.

THE police in Germany have arrested five people for allegedly smuggling Nigerian men into the country through arranged marriages.

A statement by the German police said 400 police officers raided 41 apartments and rooms suspected to be linked to the gang in Berlin and other German cities.

Reuters reported that the gang’s suspected leaders – four women and a man, ranging in age from 46 to 65 – were arrested.

Germany’s newspaper, Bild, said police investigation conducted with Portuguese authorities and Europol, revealed that no fewer than 70 men were brought in illegally through arranged marriages with Portuguese women.

According to the police, Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, served as the host for operational meetings between the Portuguese and German investigators.

Clients had paid up to €13,000 for fake certificates, with part of the sum going to women who would fly from Portugal to join their “husbands” at the German immigration office to apply for an EU residency permit.

Similar cases were detected in June when the police found out that more than 700 German men in Berlin had married pregnant asylum seekers for money.

The Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ahmed Zaki, on Monday paraded the rearrested Ifeanyi Dike, who allegedly murdered his eight-year-old niece, Victory Chikamso Nmezuwuba, for rituals.

He was paraded at the State Command in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, before a crowd of onlookers who were eager to catch a glimpse of the suspect.

Recall, Dike was caught by a local vigilance group during a failed attempt to dispose the body of Chikamso after removing some body parts, including her eyes and tongue.

The suspect escaped while in police custody, but was rearrested in Jos, Plateau State, on Friday by a team of policemen.

Chairman, National Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, says he has provided N250 million as relief assistance to victims of the devastating flood in Benue State.

Dangote said on Sunday in Lagos that this was in response to the request by the Benue State Government.

He said that the committee had also approved the release of one of its completed IDP Hostels in the state as a temporary shelter for some of the displaced people.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan had on Oct. 11, 2012, inaugurated the Dangote-led 34-member National Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation.

The committee was charged with raising additional funds to support the government’s efforts to provide adequate relief and post-impact rehabilitation to persons and communities affected by floods in the country.

Dangote said the State Emergency Management Agency had disclosed that more than 110,000 people in 24 communities, including Makurdi, were displaced by the recent flood in Benue.

The committee chairman said that asides the donation to Benue, his committee had also donated N150 million to provide relief assistance to flood victims in Anambra,

Dangote, in a statement by Mr. Sunday Esan of the Corporate Communication Department of Dangote Group, said that the committee had also released N118 million to the National Emergency Management Agency.

He said that this was to augment the N1.6 billion released by the Federal Government for procurement of food and non-food relief materials in aid of flood victims in 16 states.

According to him, the states are Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Abuja FCT, Kebbi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, and Sokoto.

He said that the committee was currently implementing the various projects in the 24 states affected by the 2012 nationwide floods.

Dangote said that the rationale behind the projects was to assist the benefiting states to better handle future emergencies, including flooding.
