UNIVERSITY OF ABUJA STUDENTS’ UNION GOVERNMENT Office of the public relation officer -Nov 24, 2014 REPORT OF THE PRE-RESUMPTION VISIT TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR-PROFESSOR MICHEAL UMALE ADIKWU The Students’ Union Government Executives in a meeting with the vice chancellor wholeheartedly commend the relentless efforts of the vice chancellor so far towards repositioning our dear prestigious University of Abuja on the part of excellence. The Students’ Union President, Comr Pelumi, while speaking crave the indulgence of the Vice Chancellor into some basic social- welfare issues as it affects our students for quick intervention to prevent unwarranted disasters particularly has the students prepare to resume back to school. The students’ union demanded the immediate intervention on crucial students welfare matters. The Need for Speed Breakers/Bumps on the Express Road in Front of the University Permanent Site Gate. The president, appeal for an urgent installation of speed breakers on the express road before the University Main Campus gate to reduce the occurrence of accident on the road. Recently we lost a student of the University to this road; sadly, it is also on record that this road has claimed a lot of lives mostly students at their prime. The students’ union government therefore request that the University management should quickly take action by contacting the necessary authorities and get the speed breakers installed to prevent future occurrence. The Vc, while speaking on the issue made it clear that necessary step has been taken to ensure the installation of the speed breakers and that in due time the speed breakers will be installed to prevent the road claiming the lives of our dear student unnecessarily. Installation of Security Lights and Street Lights on the main Campus Particularly from the University Main Campus Gate to the Express Junction The students’ union government stressed the need for the installation of security light and street light by saying the front gate of the University Main Campus is always extremely dark at night without any meaningful ray of light. This does not glorify the University of Abuja, and students or staffs moving at night for any reason will have to do that in darkness. This should not be happening at a time when the attention of the whole nation has shifted to issue of ensuring adequate security in which University of Abuja should not be left out. The union therefore appeal for a quick intervention as this will also brighten the sights of students crossing the express road at night. The president further explain the need for the installation of the security light saying, we had incidents of rape before the school gate and on the main campus at nights and also series of criminal attacks at the hostels in the past; the street light will help in the advancement of security of lives in the school. The vice chancellor in his response said, the management had look into need for the installation of the security light and street light, and the project will soon commence. The University Clinic, Particularly the Main Campus The president called the attention of the vice chancellor to the university clinic issue regarding to light, saying that during the last academic session, there was no light at the University clinic in permanent site at nights. Students and staffs that visited the clinic meet absolute darkness. The Students’ Union government on an emergency rushed a student that was involved in an accident to the clinic but got no attention as the clinic was in a complete darkness just around 10:46pm of the day. It took the proactive effort of the Students Union President and the General Secretary to save the student’s life that unfortunate night. This is absolutely unsafe for the University as this remain unresolved, the student union therefore appeal to the vice chancellor,as the Chief Executive of the University to quickly intervene on this matter to prevent casualty when students are fully back to school. The President further crave the indulgence of the VC to the point that the University clinic is not in the best shape for adequate health services for the students. We appeal that the University should consider the clinics in her ongoing transformation agenda. The vice chancellor reacted by saying, the University had come up with a better health insurance scheme programme for the entire student of the university so as to increase the revenue base for health care funding in a better coordinated manner. He furthered by saying the issue of light in the clinic will be a thing of the past in the university in due time. Increment of the Mini/Main Campus Shuttle Fare The student union got the news of the increment of the mini/main campus shuttle fare with dismay, as the union is not convinced by the rationale behind this decision of the University management. The president said, it is unwarranted and further appeal that the increment should be reversed to succour the stress and pains already afflicted on our students in pursuing their academic activities as a result of two campus university operation. The student union also use the medium to appeal that the inter University of Abuja Campus Shuttle fare should be reduce to 30Naira, the union have consulted on this matter, and we know sufficiently that the University can run the campus shuttle with enough profit for 30Naira only. In an effort to make transportation within the university uncomplicated the Students’ Union Government had secure numbers of TRICYCLES that will be transporting our student within the permanent site. The vice chancellor commended the effort of the union in getting the tricycles, and that he is sure it will reduce accident within the university, in reaction to the increment of the shuttle fare, the vice chancellor said he is waiting to see the report of the transport committee, and the ideal of increment will not be supported for any reason. Establishment of Shuttle Parks The union further demanded for a car park after the pedestrian bridge at the permanent site. It is important for the University to have a campus shuttle/motor parks to ascertain the proper organisation of students’ movement from one point to the other. This will go a long way to prevent accidents that have constantly happened on the main campus when students are fully in school. The vice chancellor reacted by saying in due time the shuttle parks project will commence Increment in School Fees The student union call the attention of the vice chancellor to the rumour of the increment in school fees; and that the union have consistently informed students that there is nothing relating to that. While we understand the cost sensitivity of running a university of this standard, the union appeal to the VC that it will be preposterous for the University to embark on the increment in school fees in a time like this, especially third party fees in a manner that throw the students in the dark. The student union therefore appeal that if such idea exists, the University Management should propose it for subsequent academic session, before which proper processes would have been concluded. The vice chancellor state and made it clear that noting like INCREMENT IN SCHOOL FEE Movement of Faculty of Management Science and other Department to the University Permanent Site The student union appreciate the effort of the management towards moving the University gradually to the permanent site, the president while speaking bring to the notice of the vice chancellor some inherent crisis the movement may generate which includes problem of accommodation for the students, inadequate lecture halls, daily transportation hazards on the express road and possibly lost of accreditation of Accounting department as the transfer will affect the operation of the Accounting Library already established at the mini campus and which is sine-qua-non to the department accreditation . We therefore appeal that these indices should be put into consideration on the issue of faculty of Management Science movement to the permanent site. The vice chancellor reacted to these by saying the university is undergoing a gradual transformation, and that the entire student should also be part of it, moreover the central bank of Nigeria (CBN) is constructing (3) different building for the university and the project has commenced in permanent site. On a final note, the VC further said the university is waiting for the governing council to look into getting a project of 10,000 hostels, with a petrol station, from an international personnel on (BOT) for 99years. In his statement he further said accounting department and some other department like chemistry and physic department due to the accommodation constrain will still remain in mini campus. The students’ union president on behave of entire student of university of Abuja further use the medium to pledge continua support for the management in building a better future for the students of University of Abuja, as we appeal that this issues should be given prompt attention as reacted to. UNIABUJA Ready For Academic Activities On The 23rd As Phase1 Part Of The Renovation Completes Our great citadel of learning UNIABUJA for the past two months now have been under renovation. Our correspondent Abdulsalam Hamza tells us with great pleasure in this interview with the consultant of all the ongoing projects, Engineer Ahmed that the school will be ready for academic activities on monday, the 24th of november as most of the contractors will be handing over to the school on friday, the 21st of November. With the level of the work, do you think the hostels and classrooms will be ready for academic activities on or before 23rd? Of course, sure! The hostels, classrooms and lecture halls can be ready for activities on monday as most of the contractors will be handing over to the school this coming friday. Which other areas of the renovation need major attention? None, most of the major work have been done. That's why i told you that by Friday, most of the contractors will be handing over so students can come in on monday. Not certain of the specific figure of the funds, but what is enough to fund the project? Sure it was, the bill was given to the school and then it was passed before work commenced. Materials used for the project, of which quality are they? The materials are of high quality. "Stating confidently". You know contractors always act like one as some of them tried to use inferior materials on Sunday taking advantage of our absence. They actually bought the materials without our consent. On realizing this, we rejected the materials and stood our grounds. When you check some parts of the boys hostel and girls hostel, you'll find the unused materials there...he stated'. Finally, sir after the completion of the of the renovation, do you think the standard of the university will match up to the likes of OAU, ABU? Yes, definitely. The renovation we are talking about is even in phases. If you notice, some buildings are not yet captured but will be in subsequent phases of the renovation. Finally he ended the interview by saying the whole place will be cleared on friday making the environment ready for learning. Engaging in some other talks after the interview, he drew my attention to the brick walls of the geography block, science block and law block telling me how the walls were sprayed with acids and other chemicals and paints applied to areas needed. Because truthfully, the walls look neat and new. He also added, by praising the VC, professor Michael Umale Adikwu for a job well done so far. |
