The new session is starting months after the final exam cos the new VC has instructed everybody to vacate the school and hostel premises after the exam for renovation, but we pray for it not to occur. Its not more Dan a month or two. Good day. |
SUG REBIRTH : With the SUG election days from commencement, information circulating round the campus suggests that one of the Presidential aspirants, Comrade Ben of Chemistry Department has agreed to step down for Pelumi of Faculty of Law, an alliance that revived the latter's chances of emerging victorious. It could be recall some months back that the election was going to be dramatic and is strictly between 'Yaradua and Shayo. With this recent development, Pelumi has stepped up his bid to becoming the next SUG President thereby blowing the tie wide open. Before the unfortunate ASUU strike, rumours had it that Ben and Pelumi were engaged in a serious burst up in the hostel with the reason being that Pelumi's camp are sponsoring a false propaganda that Ben has stepped down for Pelumi. However, after quite a series of negotiations and meetings, it has come to fruition with Ben stepping down for Pelumi in a decision he stated to be 'in the interest of all students'. Shayo is still ahead by virtue of the last polls but it is pertinent to realise that the permanent site is his strongest base and the same could be applicable to Pelumi and Yardua (whose strongest base is the mini campus) and with a rumour that Baba Tee has stepped down for him. Pelumi, being from Law Faculty with many population, has previously turned the head of some students with Kerosene and other monetary gifts, he's not to be underrated as well. With the recent alliance between Ben and Pelumi, the election has taken a new dimension and is really going to be dramatic. |

UniAbuja: The VC’s Appointment And Matters Arising ABAH ADAH— July 17, 2014 The crisis that has trailed the emergence of the new Vice-Chancellor recently at the University of Abuja is far from over as three lecturers from the ivory tower have dragged the university authorities before the National Industrial Court sitting in Abuja. Among questions being asked for determination include; whether or not the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University of Abuja, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, can legally or validly appoint Prof. Adikwu as the Vice-Chancellor of the university which is said to be in contravention of the provisions of the University (Miscellaneous Provision) Act 2003 as well as whether or not the provision of Section 8 of the Federal Character Commission (Establishment) Act is not mandatory in the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor in the University. Stakeholders are also claiming that the Governing Council of the University of Abuja failed to observe merit in the appointment process, as they alleged that “the most qualified candidate on merit, performance as well as under the Federal Character principle is Professor Umaru Garba Danbatta who scored the highest mark in the interview referred to above.” However, from the report of the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board on the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor for the University of Abuja, submitted to the Governing Council at its 34th Extra-Ordinary meeting of Tuesday, 24th June, 2014, and which was attached as exhibit before the court, the three candidates were shortlisted based on their academic achievements which were outlined as criteria or precondition for appointment as Vice Chancellor. According to the report, Prof. Danbatta, who hails from Kano State, has one academic publication to his credit in the last two years and attended two international academic conferences and presented two papers. He supervised and graduated two doctoral students as well as 16 Masters’ degree students in the last ten years. Prof. Lawal, whom the claimants alleged came second, has four academic publications to his credit in the last two years, attended one international academic conference and presented one paper. He supervised and graduated eleven Doctoral students in the last ten years. The new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adikwu, was alleged to have thirteen academic publications to his credit in the last two years, attended one international academic conference and presented one paper. He supervised and graduated seven Doctoral students as well as forty Post Graduate Students in the last ten years. Apart from these, the Vice Chancellor has, among other academic laurels, the prestigious Nigeria Academy of Science Award which he won in 2006, as the Nigerian best scientist of the year, a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science and Fellow of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. In terms of catchment area and geopolitical zones, Prof. Danbatta, a professor of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, is from Kano State (North West), Prof. Lawal, a professor of Language Education, is from Kwara State (North Central), and Prof. Adikwu, a professor of Pharmacy and is from Benue State (North Central). While the claimants alleged that on the basis of the above assessment, the three top candidates were graded with Prof. Danbatta scoring the highest grade of 86 per cent in the screening and interview exercise, Prof. Lawal came second by scoring 73 per cent and Prof Adikwu came third with 65 per cent, they however failed to provide the basis of the score as the alleged second and third candidates seemed to be better in terms of academic output., which was said to have been a critical factor in the choice of the new vice chancellor. The claimants are praying the court for a declaration that the purported appointment of Prof. Adikwu as Vice Chancellor by the Governing Council of University of Abuja “is null and void and of no effect whatsoever.” They are equally seeking an order compelling the Governing Council to observe merit and the provisions of the university miscellaneous Act and the Federal Character Commission’s Act and the 1st defendant’s Senate Rules in proceedings of the appointment of the post of the Vice-Chancellor. As a result the asked the court to make an order compelling the Governing Council to appoint the candidate with the highest score on his merit and performance in the screening and interview. Meanwhile, President of the National Industrial Court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo affirmed that the matter will be assigned to a judge of the court and hearing notices will be served on parties. However, what stakeholders are worried about is not the crisis in itself; it is the future of the university which over the years has suffered a whole gamut of set-backs ranging from poor infrastructural development to academic and administrative crises. And based on the facts above, it is clear that the authorities not only considered the result of the screening and interview but also looked into the catchment area and past performances of the three selected applicants and saw that the newly appointed VC has a richer credential and what it takes to steer the long embattled university to enviable greatness. |
Breaking News*The leadership of ASUU University of Abuja has called of the strike after the union decided to accept Professor Michael Umale Adikwu as the institution's vice -chancellor. The institution's ASUU chairman called off the nearly two-months old strike following a decision of the three university lecturers who took the new v.c to court due to his un-merited appointment as the v.c of the institution to accept him as the vice-chancellor of the school. The management of the school will throw open the school gates for students as from Tuesday, 15th July, 2014. |
The Rebirth At UniAbuja On Monday, June 30, 2014, a new vice chancellor, Prof. Michael Umale Adikwu, was appointed to run the University of Abuja for the next five years. 25 years after the university’s inception in 1988, and with over N35 billion spent, what you have is a temporary site at Gwagwalada, that is little more than a glorified secondary school and a permanent site along Giri Airport Road that is defined by inadequate, poorly built, abandoned and dilapidated buildings that dot the massive but under-utilised land mass of the university. Besides infrastructure, academic development in the university has also been woeful as it has been characterised by an epileptic work schedule, owing to incessant strike actions often by the local unions and sometimes by their national bodies. Even when in session, tales of malpractices by the lecturers and students are commonplace. Government has responded to all these by setting up a number of visitation panels, the last one which was the presidential special visitation panel of 2012. The report of that panel had far reaching recommendations, including sack of the Prof. Adelabu-led management of the university and that the vice chancellor to be appointed next should come from outside the university. This particular recommendation was sequel to the intractable problems of the university that had pitched the dons into two main divides and several but nefarious cleavages. Unfortunately, the government has failed or refused to issue a White Paper on the recommendations despite repeated demands by the local ASUU, the national body and even the council of the university. Sources say that the recent appointment of a new vice chancellor was one exercise that tasked the experience of Gen. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia (rtd), the pro-chancellor and chairman of the council. Dr Ogbemudia’s council received an unprecedented 123 applicants from eminent professors, however only 10 were shortlisted for the interview. It was also gathered that the selection board forwarded Professor Umaru Danbatta, Abdulraheem Lawal and Michael Adikwu with 83 per cent, 73 per cent and 65 per cent respectively, to the council. However, a group in the council insisted on Professor Danbatta since he scored the highest votes and his northwest geopolitical zone hadn’t any of the university’s principal officers. This group, made up of six (6) council members abstained from voting as it became clear to them that the other group made up of eight ( members was going towin. They were reported to have blank ballot papers, while the other 8 voted for Professor Adikwu. The Universities (miscellaneous provisions) (Amendment Act 2003, provides that the selection board recommends three candidates to the council from which one will be appointed. What is important is that three persons were recommended by the selection board and that one of the three was appointed. Paradoxically, it appears that a good man has emerged from this controversy, that is the new vice chancellor himself, Prof. Michael N. Adikwu. He was the most unlikely of all the candidates. He is a professor of pharmacy, a course not offered in the university. He is a from Benue state in the north central, the least favoured zone for the job. According to an inside source, he was least expected, but Prof. Adikwu emerged as one of the three candidates, which became the nemesis of the schemers that were caught napping and became victims of their own conspiracy. Prof. Adikwu is a thoroughbred academic, prolific writer with over 220 research publications in local and international journals over 100 conference papers and 10 text books to his credit. He is a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of science, a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, an Honorary Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria, President of the Nanomedicine Society of Nigeria, etc. He is also the winner of the prestigious May and Baker Price for Excellence in the practice of Pharmacy and the Nigerian Price for Science etc. The pro-chancellor and council chairman, Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, who is reported to have drawn up a long programme of action for the new vice chancellor, charged him to hit the ground running. Not surprising, Prof. Adikwu upon taking over on the 1st of July, 2014, immediately swung into action by immediately meeting with the unions to resolve issues surrounding the ongoing strike action, amongst many other things. COURT SACKS UNIABUJA VC *REPS ORDER PROBE. THE Industrial Court, on Thursday, restrained the vice chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Mike Adiukwu, from presiding over the affairs in the troubled institution. President of the Industrial Court, Justice B.A. Adejumo, gave an ex- parte order, following an application by a university lecturer, Dr Raji Rasheed and two others. This is coming barely a week after his appointment, following the retirement of Professor Adebiyi Adelakun. The court also restrained the governing council of the university from taking any step to implement the report of the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board on the appointment of the new vice chancellor. However, it directed that the originating summons be served on the university’s governing council, the vice chancellor and six other respondents. The applicants asked the court to restrain Adiukwu from parading himself as vice chancellor, pending the determination of the Motion on Notice. The order read: “It is, therefore, ordered that the first, second, third and sixth defendants/ respondents, their agents, privies, assigns, servants, however, so called from taking steps to appoint the seventh defendant/ respondent as the new vice chancellor of the University of Abuja in any manner whatsoever and from performing the duties/and all other functions of the office of the vice chancellor of the university, pending the determination the Motion on Notice in this case.” Meanwhile, the House of Representatives , on Thursday, resolved to set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the roles played by the governing council of the University of Abuja in the recent recruitment of the university’s vice chancellor. The ad hoc committee, when constituted by the leadership of the House, are expected to report its findings and recommendations within seven days. The resolution was sequel to a motion moved by Honourable Pally Iriase.” According to him, “this discontentment is fast assuming ethno-religious colouration, which may spell doom for the University of Abuja as an ivory tower and has far-reaching implications for Nigeria in the longrun.” Speaking further, he said “the discontentment stems from alleged injustice, discrimination and unfairness in the processes leading to the said appointment, which led to the dropping of first and second candidates who scored over 80 per cent and 70 per cent to pave the way for the candidate who scored a little above 60 per cent.” The lawmaker also stated that “a situation, where a third placed candidate was chosen in preference to the other two frontrunners in the competition for the post of the vice chancellor requires convincing explanation from the university governing council.” To this end, he stated that there was urgent need to stop the intractable problems bedevilling the Nigerian university system arising from brazen disregard for merit, fairness and justice. He however, said that “unless steps are taken to courageously address the discontentment in the University of Abuja community, the matter may lead to avoidable unrest.” When the motion was put to vote by the Speaker, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, it was unanimously supported by members. |
