Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) - Seven-time major titlist and two-time U.S. Open champion Venus Williams was ousted from the final Grand Slam event of the season after falling to China's Zheng Jie on a rainy Wednesday. Zheng came through for a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) second-round victory in a match that lasted more than three hours. "I want to say sorry guys," Zheng said, referring to Williams not having a chance for her third title in Flushing Meadows before the home crowd. "Today was a tough match for me. In the second set she was playing so great and in the final set we were fighting each other." Several women's matches scheduled for Wednesday were pushed back a day due to the wet weather. Among those included in the postponements was world No. 1 and defending champion Serena Williams. Her second-round match against Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva was postponed until Thursday. Third seed Agnieszka Radwanska and fifth-seeded Li Na were a pair of winners. Venus, whose match started late afternoon and lasted into the night at Louis Armstrong Stadium, was delayed a couple of minutes with the third set even, 5-5, due to drizzling conditions. The American rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the tiebreaker, but was set back due to 44 unforced errors. She equaled the tiebreaker, 5-5, when Zheng sent a return long. Venus then tried a backhand at the net, but never got it over. Zheng secured a third-round berth when Venus sent a backhand wide. "Today was tough," Zheng said of the rain. "In the second set I lost my concentration. She played so great." Next up for Zheng will be 18th-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, who dropped American Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile, last year's Wimbledon runner-up Radwanska, of Poland, got past Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-0, 7-5 at Armstrong Stadium, while this year's Australian Open runner-up and the former French Open champion Li, of China, handled Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-2, 6-2 at Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Radwanska will meet Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Friday. Li was happy to beat the rain on Day 3. "It's tough for them," she said, referring to all the players who still had singles matches to complete. "For me, just relax all day and do whatever I want." Also Wednesday, No. 30 seed Laura Robson of Great Britain beat France's Caroline Garcia, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5); and a 32nd-seeded Pavlyuchenkova eased past Aussie Ashleigh Barty 6-4, 6-0. Li will face Robson in the third round. The 16-time Grand Slam champion Serena is a four-time U.S. Open champ and two-time runner-up. She beat Victoria Azarenka in last year's final in Flushing and is also the reigning French Open champ. In addition to Serena's match against Voskoboeva, officials also postponed matches involving No. 8 seed Angelique Kerber, No. 9 Jelena Jankovic and No. 25 Kaia Kanepi. Jankovic is a former No. 1 who lost to Serena in the 2008 U.S. Open finale. |

Petri dishes have hosted all sorts of experiments, like cultivating mold or creating amoeba breeding grounds. But now, truly futuristic events are happening in these circular glass plates -- most notably, growing a brain. That's right, scientists are now raising brains in petri dishes. According to a study in the science journal Nature, biologists at the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology in Vienna have grown a human brain using stem cells. This brain isn't full- grown; instead, it is small 3D sections of tissue that apparently resemble the brain of a 9-week-old fetus. It is about 3 to 4 millimeters in size. Despite not being fully developed, this brain model still has distinct regions of the brain, like the dorsal cortex, ventral forebrain, and an immature retina. "The parts are correctly organized, but not put together," said study coordinator Juergen Knoblich, according to Popular Science. Knoblich describes it as "a car where you have an engine, you have the wheels -- but the engine is on the roof... that car would never drive, but you could still take that car and analyze how an engine works." The goal of these scientists is to be able to use lab-grown brains to study illnesses, like schizophrenia and autism. Apparently, animal brains are too dissimilar from human brains for conclusive studies on many types of neurological diseases. Scientists have created other body parts, like livers and heart tissue, but these organs are nowhere near as intricate as a brain. According to Popular Science, the 3D brain model created by the Viennese researchers is the most complex in vitro creation of tissue to date. BARCELONA: Valdes; Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Alba; Fabregas, Busquets, Xavi; Neymar, Messi, Sanchez ATLETICO: Courtois; Juanfran, Miranda, Godin, Luis; Gabi, Koke, Suarez; Costa, Villa, Turan |
WELCOME TO THE LIVE UPDATES Tonight FC Barcelona welcome Atlético Madrid to Camp Nou for the second leg of the Supercopa de España, having drawn the first leg 1-1 in Madrid. Atlético put Barça to the test in the Vicente Calderon, with the Blaugrana struggling under the intense pressure of La Liga’s strongest defense and the hostile colchonero stadium. Barça held on, however, and key subs by Martino in the second half were able to exploit a tiring Atlético Madrid back line and earn a vital away goal. Although no team ever comes into the Camp Nou confident of a win, with Atléti fresh off a 5-0 demolition of Rayo Vallecano and Barça struggling to a 1-0 victory at La Rosaleda, the “other” Madrid team might feel they can hold off their formidable hosts and nick a win. In their first match-up, Atléti stifled Barça’s attack with a rock-solid, very compact block. The center-backs and midfield destroyers teamed up to deny any space to Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi, completely nullifying Barcelona’s more passive creators and forcing the ball out wide. The Atlético forwards were the key, tracking back to help isolate Barça’s players in wide positions and double- or triple-teaming the wingers, but then breaking quickly forward on counters to expose Alves and Alba. Diego Simeone’s side will be looking to replicate this tactical success, though perhaps mollifying their intense pressure to avoid losing shape in the second half. For their part, Barça must react by bringing dynamism and verticality to this return leg, players whose constant movement and forward runs will disrupt Atlético Madrid’s carefully organized block and generate space to circulate the ball. Players like Neymar, Cesc, Alexis, and Sergi Roberto all have these qualities and have all thrived in preseason and Martino’s first few official matches. These more direct players will be key for Tata in this match and in this season overall, as they offer a way to unlock the physical, disciplined defenses Barça will continue to encounter at elite levels. While Martino’s back line is fairly predictable, much of the decisions in midfield and forward selection will come down to whether Lionel Messi should start. The recently injury-ridden Argentine “trained harder with the players who didn’t feature against Málaga,” according to Martino, and has been given the medical green light. It would probably be prudent not to play Messi and not risk aggravating his injuries, but it is unclear if Tata is ready to bench an eager and demanding Leo Messi. He has, however, been firm with his careful introduction of Neymar, saying, “My aspiration is for him to be a Barça player for 10 to 12 years, not for him to fix my problems in one match.” Martino did admit that Neymar is ready to start matches, although the decision has not been made yet. Should neither Messi or Neymar start, expect Fàbregas to once again play the role of backup Messi, a false “false 9,” if you will. I personally prefer Cesc in midfield, where his vertical runs come as more of a surprise for defenders, avoiding the static midfield problem Barça has had with Xavi and Iniesta against strong defenses. Xavi also has started all three matches this season, and could definitely use a rest. In place of Fàbregas, Martino has the option of selecting Alexis Sanchez as a center-forward, a possibility he alluded to when mentioning that he wanted “the Chilean Alexis” to play for Barça. Sanchez has been in inspired form for his country, and his link-up play, off the ball movement, and increased confidence in front of goal are all highlighted when fielded in a more central role.

Dear Hon. Minister, As a professor and mother, I have no doubt that you are aware of the fact that your ministry has a crucial role to play in how the future of this country will be. If Nigeria will remain as a going concern and team up with the rest of humanity to make the world a better place, will depend mainly on the role of the ministry you head. A strike by the ASUU is therefore a strike at the future of this nation and any shot aimed at the future of our great country must be deflected by you as the minister of education. This is the enormity of the responsibility which God Almighty has placed on your shoulders. If democracy will survive in this nation, your ministry cannot be left out Honourable minister, every nation that wants to make meaningful progress in every sphere of life gives quality attention to four major areas. These are education, security, law and order and health. A man without education is not only vulnerable, he will kill others. A man without good health is a walking corpse. A man without security is as good as dead. Where there is no law and order, people return to the jungle as resorting to self help becomes the order of the day. In all these four sectors, education, whether formal or informal, is the most important hence Jesus Christ said in the bible: “my people perish for lack of knowledge”. A nation that does not know is a dead nation. It is against this background that I urge you to do all that is needful to ensure that the current ASUU strike is resolved without further delay. Honourable minister, what is N87 or N97billion to a nation that is concerned about its tomorrow? The fight of ASUU, you will agree, is genuine even if it is one strike too many. As a professor of education, would you say you were really teaching your students before you went into government? Would you say that the quality of learning you got before you became a professor is what you were giving to your students either at the graduate or undergraduate level? Is the school environment what a university should be? Obi Nwakanma, a professor of English in an American university and a newspaper columnist, once narrated his experience when he visited the University of Jos from where he graduated 25yrs ago. His conclusion was that what we call universities in Nigeria today are nothing but ghettoes. I agree with him totally. Honourable minister, is it not a shame that our children flood the universities in the whole of Europe and America just as we have turned India to a Mecca of sort for medical attention? It is not just shameful. It is ridiculous to say the least. What is in Ukraine, South Africa or any other nation of the world that we cannot replicate in Nigeria? How brilliant are other nations that we have to jump into the plane to seek knowledge from them? The gentleman that taught me Political Sociology in my penultimate year in the university visited Germany sometime in the 1990s to see his brother. He visited one of the universities in that country. When he compared his school back in Nigeria to what he saw in Germany, he could not manage the shock arising from the difference. Upon his return to Nigeria, he resigned his appointment immediately and went into private business. Today he is in politics. This is the degree of decay our universities have sunk into. If the truth must be told ma, what ASUU is asking for is pittance compared to what has been stolen either directly from the nation’s coffers, through crude oil theft or the scandalous salaries and wages members of the National Assembly are paid. Only recently, a former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, revealed to the nation that in a short space of eight years, members of the National Assembly had got N1trillion from the national purse. What did they use it for, you may ask? As if that was not enough to anger any sane person, eminent Nigerians have been expressing shock over the proposed plan to put members of the National Assembly on life pension even when they may not have served for more than four years. There is no way anyone interested in building a strong nation would not support the stand ASUU has taken. I was shocked to my bone marrows when an assistant lecturer revealed to me recently that his monthly salary was not up to N150,000. Let us face it, in the Nigeria of today this is a ridiculous pay for someone of that status.
