Even if AIGs are the most competent to become IGs, picking based on tribal alliance affected morale and introduces indiscipline. For example, Egbetokun reached 35 years less than 2 years of becoming IG. I hear Disu will hit 35 years in 3 months or so.
This means that there are officers far less than 35 years who are DIGs who will retire because an AIG close to retirement was picked for IG. This started with Buhari who had the police act changed to accommodate MD Abubakar and now, Tinubu has also changed same act to accommodate Egbetokun and Disu

It's the president's prerogative to appoint whosoever he wishes, he merely exercised that.
Most DIGs retire with their respective IGs and like I said earlier, only 5 DIGs have made it to the rank of IG. Everything isn't about nepotism. If Tunji wasn't competent enough, he wouldn't have risen to such rank.
