Attit: I do not make general enquiry, I always make excellent market research. Do not twist it. Answer this simple question?
Can you afford to continuously buy rabbit meat at N2,000 plus per kg when there is an alternative of buying chicken at N1,000 or less per kg?
If you can, how many people will do? But before you start arguing, go and check brokers thread and read about marketing and sales of their products. Lol. Most of you raising rabbits who are first entrants are failed poultry farmers. This is a fact Incan defend. And most of you can die there deceiving new comers just to keep buying weaners from you.
I raise rabbits and I dont eat them. But do I criticize people who do? No. In fact, few people buy to eat and do I criticize them? Even you eat dog, do I care about you? Nope. I almost asked someone go into it and then I looked at it again. Why? I know that the few few buying cannot make it sustainable.
It is obvious you are breeder and you are concerned with selling your weaners. Enjoy it while it lasts. But when the reality comes, you will reduce the price of your rabbits to half of the price of chickens and you will still be begging to sell. Then, you will learn how to reduce cost of production by not buying commercial feed and feeding them only grasses. And then, the trouble will be too much and you will just be frustrated out of it. You better learn how to read market well so you dont waste 5 years precious time breeding rabbits and then you are frustrated out. Those who entered it at the early stage selling breeds are those who will have no regret. But then, they will face the reality very soon, and they will be back to square 1. Only those who have customers who they supply meat to. And what is the percentage of rabbit consumers? It has not increased a bit. In fact from my last investigation, it has dropped terribly in the last 2 years.
Go and educated yourself with drugs usage in rearing livestocks and familiarize yourself with modern laws in countries where sanity exists. Then after, we can discuss.
Goodluck! First of all... You are into your opinion! The world is vast and thought is wide... If I decide to go into rabbit meat production and farming, it's my decision. Did you know the unique business idea have setup to tackle the probs that may arise..? All what you say even confirm the findings av made concerning the market for this business. If you fail in this business or someone close to you failed doesn't mean that is the end of the world for the business... Try to be creative, if a new idea comes up which increase the acceptance rate of rabbits as it is growing currently and also tackle the cost issue involved currently then do u think the story will be the same... You gave up on a business doesn't give other pple reason to give up too.. You said i should learn on livestock drugs and usage and laws guiding countries and blablabla.. I will tell you I don't need to because I had already. Am a DR, a vet, so I should be the one to teach you in case you wanna learn more with the one u know(if you know any) , even if you've been in this business for 50yrs am still the boss.(especially at medics stuffs) But my say is, don't conclude on a thing.. Ideas rules the world not experience... You have experience doesn't mean you the boss, those that offer solution are the boss. I salute you for your wide range of knowledge and I also learn from what you wrote up there. If you notice my first post seems simple at the beginning of this thread... Isnt? , it actually to get peoples opinion in which yours is one, it great to have your comment on this post and give your opinion but going further to criticize the business the more is what you should desist from... Cus it shows your scope is still within a shallow range.. If you could see beyond that scope then I think you would think like using this disadvantage you mentioned all above to create a unique strategies to curb this problems.... As a business man you are not sent to all, I mean everyone, you should have your own market share and then you grow along with it, but with your comments av seen you already concluded and given up about this rabbits of a stuff, it ur decision, and I can't change that! But I really appreciate your insight to this busines, I will work on them thanks! |

Attit: Whenever I see farmers doing rabbit, I tell them that I give them 5 years, 98% of rabbit business will not exist anymore. Simple test. Can they buy the meat they sell at the price they want to sell? Can any of their relatives and friends? Can any of their neighbors? If no, they cannot function. Most small businesses in Nigeria start marketing via family and friends. If your friends cannot afford it, why do you think it is a good business?
I analysed the rabbit business and I realised the starters of this business created a template to buy weaners. It will get to a point not enough people will want to enter the rabbit breeding business. Then, rabbit meat will be the main issue. And what are the alternatives to rabbit meat? Chicken, turkey, beef, goat, sheep, ram, grasscutters etc. Now think deeply. Which meat is more valuable to Nigerians between goat and rabbit? Is goat meat as expensive as the price you want to sell that rabbit meat?
Talking about health, I dont see any health benefit of rabbit again. Chicken is as good as rabbit, but the moment antibiotics and vaccine were introduced, they became bad meat. What people do not understand is that rabbit meat is now rubbish in Nigeria with the way grower bombard them with antibiotics. Now, they have even started using vaccines on them. And you call that a good meat. Lol.
Good luck to anyone who thinks rabbit is the way. When there are no more breeders, those buying weaners from all these breeder will downsize. They already have their tiny market share of rabbit meat. They are already preparing towards it as they have all started their farms. Or am I telling lies? When there are not enough breeders coming in, they will simply become growers too. Who will be the loser? You that is going into it blindly. You are the loser. You are making the rabbit feed sellers and present weaners buyers millionaire at the expense of the collapse of the industry in the next 5 to 10 years.
Grilled meat can be a way out to make at least some profit, but still cannot compete with other kinds of meat. If you put grasscutter down and rabbit beside it, the average Nigerian will go for grasscutter.
Personally, I can not eat rabbit meat. Such creatures are man's friends. Why eat them?
Goodluck to rabbit breeders. Please make a general enquiries on rabbit meat and its market before concluding. We have some humans who consider rabbits more as a pets and should not be slaughtered for meat purpose or related which I think you fall among, this has cloud your judgement on this rabbit of a stuff. First all these other options u mentioned such as chicken, goat, cattle and such also got vaccinated, or given antibiotics when the need arise for them to. Vaccination is for one or more disease prevention and when you're getting a rabbit meat does not mean it has history of antibiotics or related. Wake up bro... This is a growing market! Weather you accept it or not.. It up to you! |

Maleeqberry: *Protect your rabbit from predators. Like rat, cat and other predators*
There are many occasions where farmers lament on rabbit groups over invasion of farms by predator..
Definitely something is wrong with such housings.. Of what benefits raising rabbit for predators.?it's important get a good housing that can protect your rabbit from predators. Some rabbit cage have killed rabbit more than Bloat and Coccidiosis .. Good cage should not allow falling of kits from it compartment to other compartment or floor.. Rabbits are Territorian and this should always put in consideration while constructing there cages. A good cage shouldn't allow passage of Doe A kits to mixed with Doe B kits Some cage as turn to source of injuries to both farmer and rabbit ..., breaking of rabbit leg, hanging of rabbit kits, most farmers sustain injuries while working around there cage .. Due to sharp edges of mesh and poor cage fabrication ...
Rabbits farming is a business.. There is no point raising your rabbit for predators..

IamAsiri: The frozen aspect to me can only sell faster among older people and those with health challenges who want healthy lean meat. Most students just want to eat meat or fish that are not too expensive, though that's not to say they won't give themselves a treat once in a while. But if you want to capture the students, believe me, you will have to do the "whole grilling" thing. You can employ someone for the grilling aspect if you can't do it yourself (the person will not only grill rabbits but will also grill catfish too. Imagine asking them to point at the rabbit they want and preparing it right before their very eyes! (there's nothing as fascinating as that). How do you see grilling the rabbit meat in chunks did it have high prospect of making sales in that method? I see that what of if majority cannot afford a whole grilled rabbit meat, the chunk should solve that costing and enable people to be able to afford it na! But I don't know people's thought on how they will accept the chunk grilled or chunk frozen packaged rabbit meat. What your opinion on that sir? |
Agriculture › Re: Prospects Of Selling Rabbit Meat For Students And Workers At University by kingtunmibuild(op): 12:30am On Jan 13, 2021 |
IamAsiri: The suya people wouldn't mind grilled rabbits so far it's affordable. Local rabbits should do for that right? Just my opinion. Ehn ehn... Kind of whole grilling shey!! How do you see the fresh frozen selling part too? |
Agriculture › Re: Prospects Of Selling Rabbit Meat For Students And Workers At University by kingtunmibuild(op): 8:33pm On Jan 12, 2021 |
Mcsenior: You just have to create your own market within the student environment sir.
You can even target every student with different strategy.
With proper processing, packaging and branding, some students will still go for it.
Why not have different rabbit barbecue spots at strategic locations in various locations. You can start from few schools and expand at your own pace.
You can also sell fresh or frozen rabbit meat with agressive marketing on and off campus.
If we train you, we also sell some of your rabbits for you which is another market too. We have access to both local and foreign market for rabbit. This your tips are deep, I really appreciate, I will get to your contact. But pls how can I get pure breeds, and what is the average cost for rabbits (new-zealand and chinchilla) |

IamAsiri: Rabbit meat is too expensive for students. But very few students might want to buy and also some of those lecturers who care about their health wouldn't mind buying too. Hunmm..... You are right, what solution in terms of value do you think I can implore or create to make students fall for my product? |

Hello fellows!!! I aim to start a Barbing saloon business with 500k in a university environment, Am just starting to learn the vocation tho. Actually, am not going to do the Barbing work myself cus am a medical student and still currently studying,I hope to get some great-skilled hands to work with me,(probably-students) on shifts, I want to make the Barbing shop large to extent of occupying @least 10barbers @once and my maximum target is @least 150 customers daily (hoping to reach that with my market strategy tho). What necessary things do you think I need to put in place to make me reach that target number of customers?, how should I fix my pricing?, what can make customers consider unique for them to always come in to Barb @ my shop? What sales turnover revenue should I expect at worst and at best monthly?. What challenges am I likely to face. What tactics can I use to identify skilled and well trained barbers who are student or anyone willing to work with me. Thanks and God bless as you care and answer! |
