Rt. Hon. George Daika Speaks on EFCC breaking into Former President Dr. Jonathan's House and Alleged Plans to illegally Remove Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose from Office BEING A PRESS STATEMENT BY FORMER SPEAKER PLATEAU STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY AND MEMBER HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES RT. HON. GEORGE DAIKA ON EFCC BREAKING INTO FORMER PRESIDENT DR. GOODLUCK JONATHAN HOUSE AND THE PLOT TO REMOVE THE ONDO STATE GOVERNOR, HIS EXCELLENCY AYODELE FAYOSE Protocols, My attention and that of many Patriotic Nigerians have been drawn to the news that circulated yesterday Wednesday 3rd January, 2017 on how officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raided the house of the former number one citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in a disrespectful and undiplomatic manner without prior knowledge, notice or invitation to the former President. While i am not in anyway against the present government efforts to fight corruption and ensure that those who stole from the Nation’s treasury, the fight against corruption MUST be done with respect for rule of law and due process and not orchestrated in such a manner that completely disregard the law of the land. Nigeria has laws governing the Nation and anything done outside the laws may lead Nigeria to a state of anarchy and allow dictatorship continue to rare its ugly head in our democratic nations thereby truncating and rubbishing our nascent and hard earned democracy. Things must be done the right way as doing things the wrong way no matter how good that thing is usually end up giving obnoxious interpretations to it and make people lose confidence in the system. I wonder what the Presidency and other law enforcement agencies still waiting for to evade the Houses of Babachir Lawal, Abba Kyari and the EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu who have been indicted on issues relating to financial crimes but clamping on people who have served the Country well and contributed greatly to its development. The former President must be accorded great respect and allowed to present himself in case of any issue centering on financial responsibility when he was the President and not disgraced. The fight against corruption should be all encompassing and not mere lip service or witch hunt of perceived opposition if the present government is to be taken serious and with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, Chief of Staff Abba Kyari and Acting EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Magu still serving even when being indicted by reports by the State Security Services (SSS) and the Senate, it shows clearly that President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC-led government have failed their integrity tests on the fight against corruption. It is also disappointing hearing about the plot by some Abuja-based politicians who are clandestinely bent on using illegal means to remove the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, His Excellency Ayodele Fayose. If this is happening in a democratic setting then it is sad and i hereby call the attention of the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen CFR to as a matter of urgency put all measures in place to ensure that the rule of law is observed in all issues relating to our legal system to uphold the integrity and confidence Nigerians have on the judiciary arm of government. The Constitution is clear on all issues relating to a serving Governor who enjoys immunity and can only be tried after they have served their constitutional tenure in office since for now the Constitution provides for immunity for sitting President, Vice President, Governors and their Deputies alike. However, i am not in anyway exonerating Governor Ayo Fayose from any offense which he may have or may have not committed, but my position is that the provisions of our Constitution must be respected and observed at all times. It is crystal clear that the present government is trying to silence oppositions and muscle strength completely from them even when multi-party system is operational in Nigeria. Anyone speaking against the unfriendly and inhuman policies of the present government is considered as an enemy no matter how constructive and patriotic his/her criticisms are. This is completely anti-democracy and should be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians. I wish to call on all patriotic Nigerians to come together and fight the ongoing impunity and total disrespect going on in the present administration if not our hard earned democracy may be selfishly destroyed which may throw Nigeria into a state of chaos and confusion. Supporting, guarding and protecting the democracy fought for is the task and duty of all Nigerians which must be done religiously and jealously. All hand must be on deck to safe our democracy from total collapse. Thank you very much and God bless. Rt. Hon. George Edward Daika Former Speaker, Plateau State House of Assembly. |
