A court in Libya has sentenced one of the sons of former Libyan dictator, Muammar Gaddafi, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and eight others to death over war crimes committed during the 2011 revolution. Saif al-Islam and others were standing trial for suppressing protests during the political uprising in Libya in 2011 after Libyans revolted against the government of Ghadaffi who was killed in October 2011. Saif al-Islam was not present in court and gave evidence via video link. He is being held by a former rebel group from the town of Zintan that have refused to release him. http://www.ngtrends.com/2015/07/muammar-gaddafis-son-sentenced-to-death-over-war-crimes/ |

Operatives of the Directorate of State Service (DSS) yesterday night arrested former national security adviser (NSA), Col Sambo Dasuki (rtd) in his private residence at Asokoro, Abuja. LEADERSHIP Friday learnt that the operatives in four Hilux vans, led by one Mohammed, stormed the Asokoro residence of the former NSA at about 6:40pm and laid siege on the residence, insisting on seeing Dasuki. According to sources, military operatives guarding the home prevented the DSS operatives from gaining entry into the premises which prompted the latter to threaten to force their way into the house. LEADERSHIP Friday also gathered that a similar scenario played out in Sokoto, in the home owned by the former NSA’s father, Ibrahim Dasuki, a former Sultan of Sokoto, where some other DSS operatives also stormed the home apparently in search of the retired colonel. The operatives who visited the Dasukis’ Sokoto home were said to have searched the property, including a large container that had been in the compound for many years. They were said to have locked in all occupants of the house and would not allow anyone in or out of the building. LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that the invasion of the erstwhile NSA’s home may not be unconnected with media reports of a planned probe of the defence budget and other alleged abuses of office by the immediate-past service chiefs who were relieved of their duties this week. The DSS operatives later in the night whisked away the former NSA to one of their facilities in Abuja for interrogation. A security source last night confirmed the arrest of Dasuki to LEADERSHIP Friday. As at press time, no reason was given for the former NSA’s arrest. Every attempt to get the DSS to react to the incident failed as LEADERSHIP Friday learnt that former spokesman of the service, Marilyn Ogar, had been removed as spokesman, and no replacement has been announced. http://leadership.ng/news/447651/dss-arrests-ex-nsa-dasuki-in-abuja?fb_ref=Default&fb_source=message |

President Jonathan By Henry Umoru, Asst. Political Editor AKURE, the Ondo State, literally stood still on Wednesday, as supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term aspiration stormed the Democracy Park to witness the turn of the state’s presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. As early as 7.30 am, a mammoth crowd of PDP supporters had converged on the well decorated venue of the campaign rally with beautiful balloons of PDP colours to receive the august visitor. Present to witness the campaign of the PDP presidential candidate, in the state were politicians, party leaders, stakeholders, businessmen and women, diplomats, market women, students, among others. Also there were those who belonged to different political parties during the last gubernatorial election in Ondo State. Jonathan was there with Vice President Namadi Sambo; PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu; Muazu, Director- General, PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, Dr. Ahmadu Ali; members of PDP Board of Trustees, BoT; and national leaders of PDP. On hand to recieve Jonathan and his team to Ondo State were the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko; members of the Ondo State PDP Working Committee; the Zonal Working Committee of the party Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Hon. Kingsley Kuku; the Chief of Staff to the President, Brig. Gen. Jones Oladehinde Arogbofa, rtd; a former PDP governorship candidate and ex- National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Chief Olusola Oke; business Mogul, Chief Jimoh Ibrahim; among others. Mimiko had declared the day as a public holiday to allow civil servants and students to attend the campaign rally. Before Jonathan spoke to the crowd, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi; Mimiko; Ali; Kuku; Oke; Sambo; Muazu had spoken. When it was time for him to speak, Kuku, who said he was speaking to corroborate Mimiko who had spoken for the state, stressed that Ondo was for the PDP and the President, adding that in those days, election in the state was between the Labour Party, LP, and the PDP and come the day of his birthday, February 14, the people of Ondo will vote for Jonathan and congratulated him in advance. The presidential aide, an Ilaje indegene, disclosed that peace has returned to the state chapter of the PDP as leaders, stakeholders have buried the hatchet to ensure victory for the President and the PDP in next month’s elections, adding that correction must be made so that original members of the PDP before Governor Mimiko returned are carried along if there must be true and genuine reconciliation. He boasted that he would do everything for the re- election of Jonathan even as he was optimistic that the president will win the election landslide. Addressing the crowd of PDP supporters, Jonathan said he was overwhelmed by the large turn out of people at the rally, just as he promised to empower the young people and that his administration would increase funding for education, nurture small and medium scale industries in the country. He promised to create two million jobs yearly if he emerges the winner of the Feb ruary 14 presidential election and that over 1.8 million Nigerian youths enter into the unemployed market yearly, saying that the two million jobs he proposed to create will cater for the teeming unemployed youths on yearly basis. The President, who declared that his administration will focus on education, agriculture and youth empowerment, stressed that the transformation agenda of his administration will be boosted during his sec ond term administration to develop the youths through education. According to him, as an educationist, he knows the importance of education and could not af ford to rubbish the sector. Jonathan explained that his administration had em ployed several youths pointing out that his government has provided elec tronic libraries in many prima ry and secondary schools in the country. “Politics is about people and I cannot be a leader if I fail to do what my people want,”he stated. “I appeal to all Nigerians to vote for the PDP in the forth coming general elections in order to enjoy better living. We are ready to strengthen youths through education and devel op our economy beyond the imagination of any individual or group of people.” The President spoke on the unresolved crisis among major leaders of the party in the state. While calling for the sup port of the People of the people of Ondo State, Jonathan as sured that he would do every thing within his capacity to ensure that the internal crisis within the state chapter of the PDP ends. He added that all the factions of the party in the state will soon become one. The President told the warning party leaders. Jonathan pleaded with Jimoh Ibrahim and Oke to work with Mimiko. If they fail to work together as a team, he warned, the opposition may take advantage of that which will not augur well for all in the state. The President said, “ For the PDP family, I use this platform to state that we will work hard to make sure that Jimoh Ibrahim and the governor join hands together and talk about the interest of the state”. Also addressing the rally, Sambo said Jon athan was building a better coun try for all Nigerians to benefit, noting that the achievements of the PDP led government in Nigeria cannot be over empha sized. In his remarks, Mimiko boasted that Jonathan remains the best person to lead the country and that his level of education and knowledge would take the country to higher heights. As the PDP continues the presidential campaigns head ahead of the general elections, many Nigerians think it should dwell more on issues by telling them what the government has done in the last three and a half couple years, why the people must vote for Joanthan and the PDP and what the Party plans to do if elected the President of the country. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/jonathan-million-job-agenda/ |
ABUJA — Following the promise by the Police High Command to ensure a hitch-free elections and checkmate all manner of violence, President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, commissioned 263 patrol vehicles for the Nigerian police even as he appealed to supporters of political parties to eschew violence at the polls. Represented by the Vice President Namadi Sambo, Jonathan said approval for the acquisition of 2,564 operational vehicles was given with the intention to see that the Police “provide the needed security and enhance their operation to ensure the conduct of free and fair elections.” Jonathan’s words: “The procurement of these vehicles is aimed at boosting the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to deliver effectively, efficiently and appreciably. “A well-equipped and adequately motivated police force will assist in no small measure to assist in ensuring the security needed in the drive to economic growth and development of Nigeria. “In view of the strong commitment of government to provide for the NPF within available resources, it is my hope that the gesture by government will be reciprocated by assisting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in ensuring it conducts free elections this month. “It is also expected that the deployment of these operational vehicles will translate to enhanced surveillance of our communities in order to improve security.” Highlighting the efforts of government towards enhanced peace and security of all over the country, the Vice President urged all Nigerians to see themselves as Nigerians and see to the unity of the country, despite their political leanings. He said: “I want to call on politicians, the aspirants, their supporters and their sympathisers to eschew all forms of violence and unlawful practices, both in words and conduct, before and after elections. “Let us eschew any form of violence. We should condemn any form of violence before, during and after elections. We should know that elections will come and go but Nigeria will remain as one nation and one people.” Earlier in his opening address, the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, said approval for 2,564 operational vehicles was given by the President, but the first batch of the patrol cars comprising “170 Nissan NP300 hard body Patrol Pick up vans, 129 Nissan Frontier Double Cabin Patrol Vehicles, 50 Nissan Patrol 4WD Jeeps, 10 Toyota double cabin Armoured Patrol Vans and four Ford 550 model 4X4 state of the art Armoured Personnel Carriers” are ready for commissioning. Asked if the remaining bulk will be available before the elections that are two weeks away, IGP Abba said: “Delivery particular when it is on production, you can’t make conclusions, but the most important thing is that the contract has been signed and the supply is coming from an indigenous company. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/polls-jonathan-okays-purchase-2500-patrol-bomb-disposal-vehicles/ |
ABUJA — The presidential rally of the Peoples Democratic Party scheduled to hold in Damaturu, Yobe State has been cancelled. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC, also cancelled his scheduled campaign trip to Maiduguri for undisclosed reasons without making his new date for the trip public. The rally which was supposed to hold after a similar meeting in Gombe was however called off at the last minute. Though no reason was given for the cancellation, Vanguard gathered that the rally was shelved due to unfavourable security report about the proposed rally. An advanced team of the president’s campaign delegation was already in Damaturu for the rally before they were informed that it had been shelved. Yobe, which shares border with Borno State, is the birth place of the late leader of the Boko Haram sect, Ibrahim Yusuf, who was killed in 2009. Jonathan’s campaign train had come under increasing attacks from hoodlums in the northern parts of the country, with his convoy being pelted with sachet water and stones in Bauchi. www.vanguardngr.com/2015/02/jonathan-buhari-cancel-campaigns-damaturu-maiduguri/ |

The embattled governor of Bauchi State, Malam Isa Yuiguda is said to have upped his romance with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) through nocturnal meetings at a private residence in Abuja. The secret parleys which usually hold deep in the night from 12 midnight are aimed at perfecting their game plan ahead of the crucial February 14 presidential contest between President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC’s General Muhammadu Buhari. One of the meetings took place last Tuesday in Abuja. Governor Yuguda, although a card carrying PDP member, is said to be surreptitiously working for the success of General Buhari. Apart from that, he is said to be the sponsor and godfather of many opposition candidates in Bauchi State including the governorship candidates of the APC and the Labour Party (LP). He tops the list of PDP said to be under watch by the party’s leadership over alleged double standard and poor commitment to the party. Our source revealed that the Bauchi Executive Governor who is also the PDP candidate for Bauchi South Senatorial District in the February 14 election, plans to defect to the APC if he and his cohorts succeed in scuttling the re-election bid of President Jonathan to the advantage of Buhari. “His defection is considered afait accompli once the sabotaging of PDP’s chances in presidential election is perfected and the APC victory sealed. The only thing that will stop his planned cross carpeting is if Buhari is loses to Jonathan,” he stated. He said that Yuguda has always been with the renegade governors who defected from PDP to APC. According to him, it was later resolved by the clique that he should stay behind in the party as a mole leaking crucial and tactical information from within to the APC mainly through his colleagues like Rabiu Kwankwaso, Magatakarda Wammakko and Rotimi Amaechi. The source said that the governor’s role as a black leg within the PDP was known to the top brass in the ruling party over time who have been monitoring his secret anti-party conducts from a distance. All efforts to contact the Bauchi governor or his aides for their reaction failed as they declined to answer calls. 247ureports.com/anti-party-yuguda-in-secret-meetings-with-tinubu-saraki-others/ |

Another accusation against General Buhari is that he is a tribalist and religious fanatic who would forcibly impose Sharia law on Nigerian states. Peddlers of this accusation contend that Nigerian Christians and moderate Muslims would reject Buhari’s candidacy. Surely, General Buhari is serious about his religion just like many Nigerian Muslims and Christians. But seriousness about religion does not equate fanaticism. Like other accusations, this one is not merely untrue, misleading, and unfair, but also absurd. Before the 2004 presidential elections in the United States, some African immigrants hoped that Democrats would win. We partly based our hope on the fact that Iraq and Afghanistan wars were not going well. Despite the “Mission Accomplished” declaration by President Bush, both al-Qaida and Taliban were still strong, and military and civilian casualties were increasing. Additionally, weapons of mass destruction were not found, and Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar (Taliban head) were still at large. And America was spending billions of dollars without knowing when we could achieve real victory. Indeed, our hope increased when Democrats nominated a decorated Navy veteran, John Kerry, as presidential candidate. Kerry was a respected senator who served honorably in Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star medals for his gallantry. So with Kerry’s credentials, we were almost certain of victory. Yes almost certain, . . . until the Swift Boat Veterans. You see, after Senator Kerry touted his Vietnam War records, some Republican veterans formed the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and began attacking him. This tax-exempt and unregulated organization under Section 527 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code was permitted to indirectly support or oppose political candidates. Its members charged that Kerry was unfit to be president because he allegedly lied about his military service and misrepresented the nature and effectiveness of his swift boat operations during the war. Additionally, they challenged the medals he received and alleged that he was dishonest about his records. But fact-checks showed that most of these Swift Boaters were not present when the relevant events occurred during Kerry’s service. In fact, U.S. Navy officials, and even some Republicans, agreed the Swift Boaters’ accusations were untrue. Hence, the term “swiftboating” now describes untrue and unfair political attacks. Now years after Kerry, it appears that swiftboating is occurring in the run-up to Nigeria’s 2015 presidential elections. Among the major candidates are incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan, and his challenger, Muhammadu Buhari, a retired army general who was military head of state from December 31, 1983 to August 27, 1985. Even before Buhari’s party nominated him as its presidential flag- bearer, President Jonathan’s supporters seemingly concluded he would be the man to beat. Consequently, a series of political attacks have been targeted against the General. However, an assessment of the major allegations shows that the General is simply being swiftboated. One major accusation is that General Buhari is a dictator because he toppled Shehu Shagari’s civilian government in 1983. But what peddlers of this accusation fail to inform Nigerians (especially the young generation) is that back then, Africa was different, and military coups were not uncommon. In fact, military men controlled many African countries. Consequently, the Organization of African Unity (now African Union) had no moral authority to condemn coups. Thus, tagging Buhari a “bad person” for that coup would be unfair. Moreover, the Shagari administration sacked by the coup was widely believed to be corrupt. Widespread violence and rigging, including ballot-box snatching and stuffing were reported in the 1983 elections. In fact, the Nigerian democracy had seemingly gone awry and needed a rescue mission. There were even reports of jubilation in parts of the country when the coup was announced on December 31, 1983. Firstly, as a former military head of state, Buhari had nearly absolute powers to promulgate any laws he chose. But there is no evidence that he ever discriminated against Christians or considered adopting Sharia nationwide. In fact, he reportedly hires Christians and Moslems indiscriminately. And he chose a pastor as running mate in 2011 elections. Secondly, the Sharia law accusation is absurd, because it is virtually impossible for Buhari to introduce Sharia as a civilian president. Nigerian democracy involves the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial arms. Only the Legislature makes law. Nationwide adoption of Sharia requires constitutional amendment or legislative action. Any attempt to adopt Sharia by either of these measures would be frustrated by Christians. As for Buhari’s alleged hatred for non-Northerners, there is no verifiable supporting evidence. Surely, most Nigerians view him as a strict and no-nonsense disciplinarian. Apparently he is equally strict to Northerners and Southerners. Moreover, casting further doubt on his alleged hatred for Southerners, are reports that good number of his inner circle are Southerners. Perhaps the most serious accusation against General Buhari is that he sponsors the terrorist group, Boko Haram. This charge is very damaging because this group continues to kill and maim Nigerians almost daily. But despite efforts by Buhari’s accusers to link him to the group, no one has provided verifiable supporting evidence. In fact, Buhari himself was a victim of alleged Boko Haram in July 2014. And when an Australian who claimed he negotiated with Boko Haram revealed names of its alleged sponsors, Buhari was not named. Notably, Buhari has publicly condemned Boko Haram, calling them “mindless bigots” and urging Nigerians to unite and crush them. Indeed, the Boko Haram accusation defies common sense and logic. Why would Buhari sponsor attacks that would undoubtedly doom his chances of winning the presidency? Why would he sponsor attacks that would undoubtedly prevent his supporters from turning out to vote for him on elections day? These attacks occur in Northern states, which are Buhari’s support base. Most of his votes in the 2011 elections came from there. Continued violence in these states will surely make it unsafe for people to go and vote on elections day. And without these votes, Buhari will unlikely win. So, Boko Haram’s activities do more harm than good to Buhari. The final major charge against Buhari is that at 71, he is too old. While the General is indeed 71 years old (he will be 72 on December 17, 2014), it is untrue and unfair to argue he is too old to be president. His lifestyle, demeanor and schedule do not suggest he is too old to handle the stress of being president. Notably, he would not be the only leader to become president at that age range. Shimon Peres became Israel’s ninth President at 84; Giorgio Napolitalo became Italy’s President at 81, and Arthur Foulkes became The Bahamas’ Governor General at 82. And in the United States, Ronald Reagan was few days from reaching 70 when he became president. So as they say, age is but a number. Some say Nigerian politics is a “do or die” affair. But the 2015 elections should be a turning point, which if handled carelessly, may plunge Nigeria into more violence and economic troubles. Thus, it may serve the country better if everyone shows more sense of reason and avoid politics of mud slinging, and untrue and unfair attacks. Engaging in swiftboating attacks may be laying foundations for post-elections violence. If politicians continue business as usual, Nigerians may have to continue the same responses they usually give to bad situations: “it’s well” and “God will protect us.” saharareporters.com/2014/12/23/swiftboating-general-buhari-jude-menes |
"Why We Can't Defeat Boko Haram"- Army Commander And Family Threatened Over Letter to Jonathan An army commander, who wrote a comprehensive letter to President Goodluck Jonathan exposing the rot and high level corruption militating against a successful campaign against Boko Haram insurgents, is now under threat. Lieutenant Colonel A. Wende of the 103 Battalion, who is currently serving in “Operation Zamani Lafiya” in Konduga, wrote the letter detailing the challenges confronting the army in trying to crush Boko Haram, including within the army leadership. SaharaReporters learnt that the army authorities have threatened to court-martial Lt. Col Wende if he does not openly denounce the letter. On grounds of principle, the officer has so far refused to renounce the letter. In the letter, the army commander made several damning allegations against his superiors including pinpointing how the General Officer commanding the 7th Battalion in Maiduguri was diverting over 600 bags of rice meant for the troops. Lt. Col. Wende went as far as revealing that Nigerian army generals, including the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Minimah, do not go anywhere near the battlefronts. He further disclosed that over 70% of army commanders are facing court martial proceedings instituted by the Nigerian army leadership. In view of these facts being indisputable, and unable to frighten Lt. Col Wende with threats of a court martial, General Minimah on Monday tried to dismiss the letter as fake and as having been written by people he claimed are affiliated with Boko Haram. Meanwhile, SaharaReporters has also learned that the army’s Defence headquarters has since last week quietly began to investigate the Acting GOC of 7th Division, perhaps in connection with the allege diversion of the 600 bags of rice. In order to assist the public to understand the severity and importance of Lt. Col. Wende’s letter, we hereby publish the unredacted copy of his letter to President Jonathan in full. saharareporters.com/2014/12/23/why-we-cant-defeat-boko-haram-army-commander-and-family-threatened-over-letter-jonathan |

I AM writing this open letter to the 8000 delegates expected to participate in the APC convention scheduled to hold at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos to select their presidential flag bearer among four aspirants on December 8, 2014. Among the four aspirants, General Muhammadu Buhari is the leading contender for the exalted position of potential president of the country. I wish to advise the delegates to the convention not to select Buhari as the APC Presidential flag bearer in view of the following scenario that will happen if the delegates makes the mistake of picking him as their presidential candidate for the May 2015 presidential election against President Jonathan. South-South Zone/South Eastern Zone: PDP has continued to use Christian-Muslim sentiments in its propaganda campaign against the APC in those two zones, coupled with a divisive president whose stock in trade is promoting tribal and religious sentiments to gain sympathy and political support from the two zones in view of his incompetency in managing the affairs of the country. Almost all the voters in these two zones have never voted for Buhari and will never vote for him because they consider him as religious apologist, an Islamic fundamentalist who could promote Islamic and muslim interest more than national interest once he has access to the political power as Nigerian president and nobody in this world can change the perception of the voters from these two zones. The main reason Buhari lost in the previous presidential elections in those zones is still alive if not worsened by the Boko Haram attacks on Ibos and other Christians living in the north eastern part of the country. South Western Zone: It is most likely Asiwaju Bola Tinubu would intimidate the South West delegates to support General Buhari against their interest. Tinubu does not have the grass root support like Awolowo, he doesn’t have that capacity and mass appeal to make Yoruba vote for Buhari. PDP would definitely exploit the political rivalry between the far north and the south west that existed right from the first republic and already two states are with PDP almost all the Yoruba christians and other Nigerian nationalities residing in the south west may not vote for APC if it fills Buhari as presidential candidate. Like it was difficult selling Awolowo outside the Yoruba land especially to the Northerners and Easterners Buhari also is unsaleable in the South West. Religious and regional sentiments will dominate the Nigerian Political landscape in 2015 not ideology or manifestos. If APC fields Buhari, the party will lose the 2015 presidential election in the South West like it happened in 2003,2007 and 2011 because Tinubu cannot market him in the zone. North Central Zone: PDP would continue to drum to the many Christian minority tribes that APC is a muslim party and the party is the sponsor of Boko Haram. The truth is that 2015 is the APC’s best chance of getting into power in view of the apparent incompetence and failure of Jonathan administration in all spheres of the economy. If the delegates vote Buhari as presidential candidate on Wednesday, December 9, 2015, it will show that the party is unserious in the eye of southerners and Nigerian christians who are a very important component of the country. APC delegates should not fall into the hands of PDP and president sentimental and divisive politics by electing Gen. Buhari as their candidate. The international crisis group a worldwide political think tank has issued a statement on Friday 22nd November confirming that competing for the presidency between Northern and Niger Delta politicians and along religious lines is leading the country into a serious crisis, the same prediction was made by a highly respected Islamic scholar Sheik Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gummi (probably after he did istihara). The renowned Islamic cleric advised Gen Mohammadu Buhari not to contest for presidency due to the apparent political crisis that would cause the country but for his selfish and self-centered personal interest and arrogance he refused to listen to the word of wisdoms. In the final note, I wish to appeal to the 8000 presidential delegates to kindly be more patriotic and nationalistic by voting for less controversial candidate with little political and religious baggage a candidate that is less controversial, less divisive that would command nationwide support cutting across religious and tribal divide, you please in the name of God ignored the directive of your political god fathers and APC big wigs and vote for the survival of Nigeria and the interest of your children and grand, great grandchildren by voting with a clear conscience. If you ignore this advice by voting Buhari in view of the apparent catastrophy that your action will cause the country next year posterity and history will never forgive you and APC will not have another chance to salvage the country from the hands of Ijaw extremist that are running the country currently. IF you ask me, all the points Chief Olusegun Obasanjo raised on the Boko Haram insurgency, as published in the Vanguard newspaper of Thursday November 27, were all valid. But the paradox is; he spent a good eight years in the saddle of the Nigerian government, why did he fail to put any of these measures he highlighted into place? After all, the seeds for Boko Haram were sown during his regime, with many state governors illegally foistering the sharia laws on hapless citizens. The fact is, in saner climes, people that have mismanaged opportunities are allowed to melt into oblivion but not in Nigeria where things run in circles. As long as we keep running in circles, going back to our own vomits and playing politics with the nation’s jugular, we shall remain the same. What ever theory on crime or deviancy that is propounded in the present Boko Haram situation, the bottom line is; it got to this level because our politicians allowed it to fester for their personal and selfish interests. That Obasanjo’s address was nothing short of self denial of his contribution to the over all rot we presently face as a nation. Nigerians are so forgetful. I wish we can play back the years 1999-2007. The Boko Haram insurgents are human beings like you and me. They have been blown out of proportion because of the consequences of omission and commission on the part of those directing the affairs of the affected states and the nation. I have written before on this column that; there is no way we can win the battle against the insurgents without the conscious and deliberate efforts of the indigenes of the north eastern states to defend their land. The land is their history, it is their ancestry, heritage, culture and to a great essence, their being. Without your heritage, you are a ‘born throway’ – apology to Uncle Sam- and no sane man sits down and watch his land and that, his forefathers have laboured for, to go in ruins. Better die fighting than live a life of cowardice. Forget about the Federal government and the politics of the politicians, if the people of the North east decide today that Boko Haram activities must stop in their land, it will stop. Watching Wolf Blitzer programme on CNN of 13th November evening, this fact was reinforced in my mind. Wolf interviewed a retired US army general, Dan Bolger, who played active roles in the Iraq war that toppled Saddam Hussein. He just released a book on the American mission in Iraq and Afghanistan which he titled “Why We Lost The War”, the summary of his book centred around counter insurgency and he submits that counter insurgency must come from the people. The Americans succeeded in occupying Iraq and Afghanistan but they could not finish the business, they won the battle but could not win the war, they could not win the war because they did not successfully carry the indigenes along. He submits that: ‘the Iraqis’ had to get the job done’. It is the Iraqis’ that understands the terrain, the language, the people and also the insurgents. Today’s wars have changing patterns and modes as compared to those of the 20th century, brute force and ammunitions alone do not make it happen. The greatest asset is making the people, I mean, the victims to agree that you are fighting for their cause. It is even worse when religion is brought into it. What I am proposing here is not theory, it is real and working. In the mirror online of 14th November, 2014, was a caption “Army/Vigilante flush out Boko Haram from Mubi”. In the Vanguard newspaper of Wednesday 19th November, 2014, the feature article under the caption ” Recapture of Mubi, Chibok…” read thus: “… A recent collaboration between the military and the local vigilante groups seems to be the magic wand needed to flush out the insurgents. It worked in Mubi and Chibok, hence the clamour for this mode of operation in the war against terrorism in the country.” In fact, the introduction to the article states thus: “They realise that they had become endangered species in their own fatherland and if nothing was done urgently to flush out the insurgents, their huge investments would be destroyed, political ambitions thwarted and their relevance called to question. That was the quagmire some concerned elite and business tycoons from Boko Haram ravaged and other parts…..found themselves in”. It went further; ” it was against this backdrop that these prominent indigenes mobilised the local war lords who are not sympathetic to the cause Boko Haram is fighting, to take up arms and defend their homeland from being over run by the overzealous insurgents”. That was how Mubi and Chibok got rescued from the hands of the Boko Haram insurgents. It is clear that our army cannot win the war without the support of the indigenes, such synergy must be encouraged for the remaining part of the war against the insurgents. The army cannot fight without information and it is the people who are born and bred in that terrain are in the position to offer accurate or factual data about the situation on ground. According to Gen. Dan Bolger, it takes a long term effort to build an army. He says: “building a military takes decades” and you have to train the locals to withstand those insurgents. To train a sergeant for example will take nothing less than ten years. Also, to him, it takes more than equipments to win the insurgency battle; leadership and mindsets are other vital factors. What is going on for the insurgents is their mindset, they are not good or well trained soldiers, they have only been indoctrinated with very extreme religious ideologies, of hate and negative jihads, we must find a way to neutralise this. Also, the sponsors of the insurgents must be traced, identified and brought to book. Our politicians must back off and stop commenting on Boko Haram activities when they do not have the solutions to solving it, or, if they have, let them pass it on to the military authorities under confidential cover. The boko harams are not invincible, they are humans like me and you. Mr. Sunny Ikhioya, a commentator on national issues, wrote from Lagos. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/12/boko-haram-obj-breaking-myth/ |

A presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, has said it is still possible for the party to adopt a consensus candidate for the 2015 presidential election. According to him, for such to happen, the candidate would have to be chosen by the aspirants themselves. Nda-Isaiah stated this shortly after casting his vote at the party’s governorship primary in Minna, Niger State. He said, “I cannot rule out the prospect of a consensus candidate because even 24 hours is a long time in politics. A consensus candidate should be chosen by the aspirants themselves and would be base on the facts on ground that the candidate is more likely to win for the party. “But so far, that has not been done and no meeting or attempts have been made on the issue at all. As it is now, all of us are aspirants preparing for the primaries.” He also said the APC is out to rescue Nigeria from further decay, arguing that if the PDP-led federal government is given another four years in 2015, the country would collapse. “If President Goodluck Jonathan is allowed to rule for another four years, Nigeria will not be able to survive it again. The country cannot survive another four years of an incompetent administration. “APC has a divine responsibility to win the 2015 elections. Even if it be by default or an act of omission or by anything we do on our path to make Goodluck Jonathan continue, even if we allow him to rig, Nigeria will not be the same again for the four years he will rule,” Nda-Isaiah said. www.today.ng/politics/race-to-2015-apc-can-still-adopt-a-consensus-presidential-candidate-nda-isaiah/ |
The leader of the El-Zakzaky Muslim Sect in Kano, Sheikh Muhammad Mahmoud Turi, on Thursday in Kano, alleged that the federal government is behind the Boko Haram insurgency in the country. According to him, the sect’s constant violent activities in the Northeast and other parts of the North shows that government and its agencies have a hand in its operations. Sheikh Turi disclosed this while addressing reporters at the NUJ Press Centre in the state. He also disclosed that members of the sect would commence a six-day mass trekking ritual from Kano to Zaria starting from Sunday, Dec. 7, to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, who he described as a freedom fighter. “It is an open secret that the present government cannot exonerate itself from all these mayhem that is happening in the country. It is so obvious that whatever may be the reason, nobody in the country can tell us that the government is not aware or has no hand in what is happening, the government is fully responsible and there is no doubt about it. “If one is saying that government is not Boko Haram, how did the soldiers get guns and killed us in Zaria? Are they not the Boko Haram? Who killed the three sons of our national leader in broad day light in Zaria? The soldiers killed our people. Those children were university students and Boko Haram means education is sin, then the soldiers killed them for nothing sake! The soldiers are the Boko Haram. “I cannot agree with the vice president or any other person who made such a presentation that the government can be exonerated from the activities of Boko Haram. Nobody anywhere in Nigeria can agree to that—except if that person is either afraid or he is a politician. You can never exonerate or separate the government from Boko Haram,” he said. www.today.ng/news/fg-is-behind-boko-haram-sect-leader-sheikh-muhammad-turi/ |

Justice Agatha Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, today December 1, 2014 dismissed an application filed by Timothy Anthony Anjide, the second accused person in the ongoing trial of Aliyu Akwe Doma, former governor of Narasawa State. EFCC Press Release Akwe Doma: Court Refuses Request for Transfer of Case Akwe Doma Justice Agatha Okeke of the Federal High Court sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, today December 1, 2014 dismissed an application filed by Timothy Anthony Anjide, the second accused person in the ongoing trial of Aliyu Akwe Doma, former governor of Narasawa State. Doma, Anjide and Dauda Egwe are being prosecuted on a 10 count-charge bordering on money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Anjide had approach the court, asking that the case be re- assigned, alleging bias against her lordship. At the resumed hearing today, the defence counsel, Olalekan Ojo, who stood in for Charles Edosomwan, SAN, brought a notion on notice for an order of the honourable court to transfer the case. The defence stated that there had been circumstances in the proceedings that suggest a likelihood of bias by the judge. He stated that the judge has failed to subpoena certain functionaries of the state, and that her lordship compelled the second accused (Anjide Timothy) to appear before the court in spite of his critical health condition. He argued that the second accused has lost confidence of getting a fair trial before her lordship. The prosecuting counsel, Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, urged the court to dismiss the application. He stated that ‘the application does not show that the first and third accused have lost confidence in the court. It is only the second that is complaining’. Pinheiro further stated that for a case of bias against a judge to be established, there must be concrete evidence in support of the charge. “It is not enough to say there is a suspicion of bias, rather suspicion must be reasonable and looked from objective stand.” The prosecution further said that the defence does not need a subpoena when it can apply for certified true copies of document. According to Pinheiro, the cry of the applicant that the subpoena applied for has been consistently turned down by the court is premature and misconceived because the prosecution is yet to close its case neither is it time for the accused persons to open their case. In dismissing the application, Justice Okeke stated that the application for transfer of the case lacks merit. The case was adjourned to January 19, 20 and 21 2014 for continuation of trial.
