Politics / Peter Obi Calls Out FG Over Fuel Subsidy, NNPC’s Fuel Supply by Kosiso12(f): 8:24am On Sep 03
Peter Obi Calls Out Tinubu-led Gov’t Over Fuel Subsidy, NNPC’s Fuel Supply Failures | #Politicsnigeria

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called out the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government over the persistent fuel scarcity and conflicting reports on subsidy payments.

In a statement on social media, Obi, the Labour Party’s flagbearer in the 2023 election, demanded transparency in the operations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), particularly in its financial dealings and plans for the future.

He expressed shock that the NNPCL, which declared a N3 trillion profit in 2023, is now claiming “financial constraints” in supplying fuel, leading to widespread scarcity and hardship.

Obi attributed the fuel crisis to the government’s ineptitude, citing the struggles of the $20 billion Dangote Refinery and other modular refineries to secure crude oil supply, as well as the NNPCL’s search for outside operators for its refineries.

He insisted that the Petroleum Industry Act mandates an open and transparent NNPCL, and called on the government to come clean on the issues and take responsibility for the mess.

Obi’s statement reads: “Nigerians must stop at nothing in demanding for transparency in the operations of government especially critical agencies like the state-owned NNPCL whose activities appear to be shrouded in secrecy. The conflicting reports on subsidy payments have left Nigerians in the dark, unsure of what is happening in this all-important company. It is very curious that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) which declared a N3 trillion profit in 2023, is coming up with a bizarre claim of “financial constraints” in supplying fuel.

“The fuel scarcity crisis, characterized by endless queues, and untold hardship, is a direct result of the government’s ineptitude. The $20 billion Dangote Refinery and other Modular Refineries’ struggles to secure crude oil supply and NNPCL’s search for outside operators for its refineries are further proof of this administration’s gross incompetence. We demand a better level of transparency in NNPCL’s operations, financial dealings, and plans for the future. The Petroleum Industry Act mandates an open and transparent NNPCL, we should not stand idly by while this government violates our laws. We demand that this administration come clean on these issues and take responsibility for the mess it has created.

“We should not rest until we uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable. The Nigerian people deserve better.

Crime / Amaka Sonnberger Faces Two-Year Jail Term Or Deportation Over Hate Speech by Kosiso12(f): 7:40am On Sep 03
Amaka Sonnberger, a Canada-based Nigerian woman, arrested by Toronto Police for making hate-motivated threats against individuals of Yoruba and Benin descent, could face a potential two-year prison sentence if convicted, or deportation if she is found to be a migrant.

The arrest followed a disturbing virtual meeting on TikTok where Sonnberger was heard making threats against Yoruba and Benin people.

In a clip shared widely on social media, Sonnberger was recorded saying in Pidgin English, “Record me very well; it’s time to start poisoning the Yoruba and Benin. Put poison for all una food for work. Put poison for una water; make una dey kpai one by one.”

The Toronto Police Hate Crime Unit acted swiftly after receiving reports of the incident on August 28, 2024.

According to the police statement, “Toronto Police have arrested a woman in connection with a suspected hate-motivated threat investigation. The arrest follows a report received on August 28, 2024, regarding a threatening incident.”

Sonnberger’s case is being treated with utmost seriousness under Canadian law.

According to Section 319 (1a) of the Canadian Criminal Code, anyone convicted of inciting hatred against an identifiable group could face up to two years in prison.

The section reads: “Everyone who, by communicating statements in any public place, incites hatred against any identifiable group where such incitement is likely to lead to a breach of the peace is guilty of (a) an indictable offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or (b) an offence punishable on summary conviction.”

However, the implications for Sonnberger could be even more severe if she is not a Canadian citizen.

The “Migrants Know Your Rights Guide,” published by several advocacy groups, notes that migrants convicted of crimes punishable by more than six months in prison could face deportation.

This applies to both temporary and permanent residents, although the specific consequences can vary based on their status and the nature of the crime.

If Sonnberger is found to be a migrant and is convicted, she could be deported from Canada.

The guide states, “If you are convicted of a crime, you could lose your immigration status. Whether you lose your status depends on ‘how serious’ the crime is, the specific crime committed, and the type of status you possess.”

For permanent residents, a prison sentence exceeding six months for certain crimes could result in losing their status.

For those without permanent status, even minor offences can lead to deportation if they are deemed indictable.

Toronto Police have indicated that hate will be considered an aggravating factor in sentencing if Sonnberger is convicted.

The statement also mentioned that charges related to hate speech, such as promoting hatred or advocating genocide, require the Attorney General’s consent and are often subject to procedural delays.

The police statement noted, “When suspected hate-motivated offences are reported to the police, the investigation could be led by a Divisional Investigator with the support of the Hate Crime Unit, or in some cases, will be investigated exclusively by the HCU.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by three years.

The disclosure was made by sources at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the IGP’s tenure was extended despite his impending retirement age of 60, which he will reach tomorrow, September 4, 2024.

According to the sources, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, presented the IGP with a letter confirming his tenure extension on Monday.

A senior security officer at the SGF Office also confirmed that the IGP received his letter of tenure extension from Akume on Monday morning.

Egbetokun, who was appointed IGP in June 2023, would have been due for retirement tomorrow.

Politics / Ohanaeze Ndigbo Declares Prayers For South-East Amid Rising Insecurity by Kosiso12(f): 9:42am On Sep 02
JUST IN!!! Ohanaeze Ndigbo Declares Prayers For South-East Amid Rising Insecurity

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has declared September 29, 2024, as a day of prayer, reflection, and remembrance for the Igbo nation.

The declaration comes amid growing concerns over the persistent challenges facing the Southeast region, including insecurity, socio-political marginalization, and the erosion of cultural values.

In a statement on Sunday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo painted a grim picture of the current state of Igboland, describing it as “a crucible of suffering” due to the escalating violence and governance failures that have afflicted the region for decades.

The organization also highlighted the struggles of Igbo-speaking communities in Benue, Kogi, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers States, as well as the economic challenges faced by Igbo businesses in Nigeria.

“Our beloved Southeast has become a crucible of suffering, caught in the merciless grip of escalating insecurity and governance deficiencies,” the statement read.

The organization further lamented the impact of these challenges on the cultural and social fabric of the Igbo people, noting that it has led to “a lamentable deterioration of our cultural values and norms.”

Despite these adversities, Ohanaeze Ndigbo commended the resilience of the Igbo people, whose “remarkable resilience in the face of relentless provocations and confrontations” has been a source of strength.

The group praised the entrepreneurial spirit of the Igbos, which it described as “the backbone of economic vitality across Nigeria and beyond.”

As part of the Igbo Day observance, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called on all Igbos, both at home and in the diaspora, to observe a minute of silence at exactly 12 noon on September 29th.

This moment of silence will honor the memory of those who lost their lives to violence, ethnic strife, and state-induced calamities.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, emphasized the importance of this day, stating,

“This is not merely a remembrance; it is an invitation for renewed hope and a commitment to healing our land through prayer, forgiveness, and a collective drive for justice.”

The 2024 Igbo Day, themed “Ozoemela” (Never Again), will feature prayers, traditional rites, and the erection of a memorial in Asaba, Delta State, to honor the victims of the Asaba Massacre.

“The erection of monumental structures in Asaba will serve both as a reminder of our past and as a declaration of our undying commitment to the pursuit of our common good,” Isiguzoro added.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo concluded its statement with a call for unity and divine intervention, urging all Nigerians and lovers of justice to stand in solidarity with the Igbo people during this significant moment.

Politics / 2027: North Should Wait Till 2031 To Produce Next President , Says Shehu Sani by Kosiso12(f): 7:19pm On Aug 30
2027: North Should Wait Till 2031 To Produce Next President , Says Shehu Sani | #Politicsnigeria

A former lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, Senator Shehu Sani, has stated that presidential aspirants from northern Nigeria should wait till 2031.

Senator Sani argued that only candidates from the southern region should contest the next presidential election in 2027 election.

Sani also pointed out that it would be just for the North to support Tinubu, given the support President Tinubu had previously offered to the North.

He recalled that Tinubu’s alliance with former President Muhammadu Buhari was instrumental in Buhari’s eventual victory after several unsuccessful attempts.

He argued that the North’s eagerness to return to power in 2027, as exhibited by some political elites, was driven by personal ambitions rather than the region’s interests.

He said, “From my point of view, the issue of the 2027 election should be left for the South to contest; whether it is President Bola Tinubu, Peter Obi or ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

“And then, the North now has the legitimate right to contest and be allowed to produce the president in 2031.

“Asiwaju (Tinubu) is a product of the North and is reciprocal for what he has also done for northern Nigeria.

“Buhari had contested for the presidency for so long a time but it was only when he allied with Tinubu that he emerged.

“So, Tinubu took for the North at a time that they needed him most and it is time for them (the North) to stand for him.

“After all, when he is done, the north will now have the opportunity to produce a president from the North-East, North-West or North-central.

“The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees that every Nigerian can contest election. Any region can contest the election. That’s what the Constitution says.

“I believe that the 2027 election should be left for the South to contest. And then the North will now have the legitimate right to contest and be allowed to produce the president in 2031.

“It is in the interest of national unity and peace that southern Nigeria be allowed to complete their eight years in office and then it will rotate back to the north in 2031.”

He expressed optimism that the political elite in the North would respect the power rotation principle, allowing the South to complete its eight-year term before the presidency rotates back to the North in 2031.

Sani reiterated that, if Tinubu effectively tackles the challenges in Northern Nigeria, no northern elite could prevent his re-election in 2027.

The Federal Government has said it will take action against Simon Ekpa, the leader of the Biafra Government in Exile (BRGIE), who recently announced plans to declare the Biafra Republic on December 2, 2024.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed that the government would respond appropriately through diplomatic channels, including the European Union, to extradite Ekpa from Finland.

“The FG would respond appropriately to the Finnish Government through the EU. On the part of the military, troops would sustain operations against IPOB/ESN,” General Buba stated.

Ekpa, who claims to be the Prime Minister of BRGIE, announced on his social media handle that the Biafra Government would unveil the map of the “40 United States of Biafra” and issue a declaration on December 2, 2024.

The move, according to Ekpa, aims to hasten the realization of Biafra’s independence. However, the Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to sustaining military operations against the Indigenous People of Biafra and Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN).

Education / Ebonyi Students Allege Police Extortion, Cry For Help by Kosiso12(f): 6:33am On Aug 28
Students of the Ebonyi State University have lamented alleged police extortion, harassment and intimidation across the state especially the Abakaliki metropolis and its environs saying the ugly trend has become disheartening.

They averred it was worrisome that the police, constitutionally empowered to safeguard the lives and property of the citizenry, were treating the same with reckless abandon, claiming the development was unbecoming.

In a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Augustine Ogbodo, titled, “Appreciation and concern over the conduct of some police officers in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State”, the President of the Students’ Union Government at the Ebonyi State University, Oshim Tobias Nkwegu, observed there would be imminent chaos if nothing was done to address the situation.

The letter dated Monday, August 26, 2024, a copy of which was sighted by our correspondent, on Tuesday, read, “On behalf of the Students’ Union Government of Ebonyi State University, I wish to extend our sincere appreciation for the remarkable reduction in citizen-initiated theft and robbery in Ebonyi State under your esteemed leadership. Your commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the citizens is truly commendable, and we acknowledge the positive impact it has had on our community.

“However, while we applaud the progress made, it is with deep concern that we must bring to your attention a troubling development that has recently emerged. We have received numerous reports from students and youths in Ebonyi State, particularly in Abakaliki, of alarming incidents of police-initiated extortion and intimidation. It is disheartening to learn that some police officers, who are meant to protect and serve the public, have instead engaged in activities that can only be described as theft and robbery, targeting the marginalised population of students.

“These incidents of police extortion have created a climate of fear among the students, many of whom have been forced to part with their hard-earned monereportr duress. In some cases, those who resist such intimidation are unlawfully detained without any formal complaint against them, further compounding the distress faced by our students.

"As the President of the SUG, I have been charged with representing the interests and welfare of the students of Ebonyi State University, in light of the above, …we kindly request that your office issues a public order through the media, cautioning all police officers in Abakaliki against engaging in such unlawful activities. An unequivocal message should be sent to all officers that such behaviour will not be tolerated and that any officer found guilty of extortion or intimidation will face the full weight of the law.”

He requested that the Students’ Union Government of Ebonyi State University be granted the authority to assess the complaints and statements of students currently detained in police cells as many of those cases lacked formal complainants and appeared to be the result of students refusing to succumb to extortion by certain officers.

“Madam, the current situation has caused great unrest among the students and youths of Ebonyi State. Should there be no positive response to our concerns, the students may be forced to seek assistance from the general public, a situation we hope to avoid. We trust that your good office will take swift and decisive action to

Efforts made by PUNCH Metro to reach the Ebonyi State Police Command, for a reaction on the development failed.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, could not pick up his calls when our correspondent called his mobile for inquiries.

He was also yet to respond to the messages sent to him as of the time of filing this report, on Tuesday.

Politics / FG Vows Action As Independent Marketers Defy Government, Sell Fuel At N1,000/lit by Kosiso12(f): 7:47am On Aug 27
Despite efforts by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) to maintain a pump price of N568-N617/litre, independent oil marketers have increased prices to N900-N1,000/litre.

In reaction, the Federal Government has vowed to shut down offending stations, citing profiteering and exploitation of Nigerians.

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) claims that private depot owners are selling petrol to independent marketers at exorbitant rates, leading to high pump prices.

Spokesperson of the NMDPRA, George Ene-Ita, said the petrol price reports that the regulator gets from its officials at the depots were different.

“Our depot people see a different price because we ask them to publish the prices at the depots every day and it is not N850/litre. Our field agents at the depots give us a different figure,” he said.

Responding to reports of independent marketers in Lagos and other states selling petrol at exorbitant prices of N900 to N1,000 per litre, Ene-Ita, said the NMDPRA will take action against such outlets.

We will shut down any filling station found selling above the approved price if we catch them,” he stated. “NNPC sets the ex-depot price for off-takers, and we work together to determine the margins. There’s no justification for prices to be that high.”

However, independent marketers argue that they are forced to buy petrol at high prices due to low supply from NNPC.

According to the marketers, the subsidized rate of around N570/litre is only available to major marketers. As a result, they then sell petrol to consumers at higher prices, ranging from N850 to N900 per litre, and up to N1,000 per litre in some remote areas.

“That is why no marketer is complaining of low margins again. This is the time for them to make money. The only issue is that getting the ptakect is not that easy,” a source told The PUNCH.

“The price is high because the supply is low. It is a matter of demand and supply. The price will continue to be up, at least for now. It Is an opportunity for the filling stations to add to their margins. This is an abnormal situation. Normalcy is restored, and the regulatory authority can monitor. Can the regulator monitor anybody now?

“Imagine when you pay about N30m to NNPC to order petrol and it takes about one month to get the product. Assuming you take N30m from a bank with this interest rate, is that not a problem?’ a marketer stated.

Health / Resident Doctors Begin Nationwide Strike by Kosiso12(f): 8:03am On Aug 26
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared a nationwide 7-day warning strike, commencing on Monday, August 26, 2024, at 12 am.

The strike is in response to the abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna.

Dr. Dele Abdullahi, President of NARD, announced the strike during an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council.

“The strike is total, and there will be no concessions or emergency care during this period,” he said.

Dr. Popoola was kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. Although her husband was released in March, Dr. Popoola and her nephew remain in captivity after eight months.

Recall that NARD members protested against Dr. Popoola’s abduction on Thursday, August 15, in Lagos. The demonstration was organized by resident doctors of Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta.

Politics / Son Of Slain Sokoto Emir Reveals Lawmaker Who Hired Bandits To Kill His Father by Kosiso12(f): 1:50pm On Aug 23
Son of Slain Sokoto Emir Reveals Lawmaker Hired Bandits Who Abducted and Murdered His Father | #Politicsnigeria

Following the abduction and murder of Alhaji Isa Muhammad Bawa, the late Sarkin Gobir of Gatawa District, his son has alleged that a sitting member of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Hon. Aminu Boza, was involved in the plot.

According to the son, the bandits who abducted and killed his father revealed that Boza provided them with crucial information and paid them N5 million to carry out the kidnapping.

In a video, the son of the late Bawa is seen lying on a sickbed while receiving treatment, recounting the details of the confession by the bandits.

“The bandits said in front of me that Aminu Boza was the one who gave them the guns to kidnap us,” he said. “They were given the weapons during the campaign period, and they told my father that they did not know him from anywhere but were paid N5 million to kidnap him.”

Reacting in a viral audio, Boza denied any involvement in criminal activities or association with the bandits.

Instead, he vowed to continue fighting against banditry.

“I am declaring to the whole world that these allegations will never discourage me from fighting against banditry,” he said.

He said further, “As I have always said, we need to unite and eliminate these bandits to achieve lasting peace.

“Until now, I have consistently urged the government not to negotiate with them. These bandits are criminals and cannot be trusted. I understand that fighting the bandits will not be easy, but if it costs my life, I will be content knowing I did everything to satisfy my conscience.”

“I would be proud to die fighting the bandits if it means we can rid our community of them and restore peace,” he added.

Business / Shareholders Worry As Ownership Tussle, Fraud Rocks First Bank by Kosiso12(f): 10:16am On Aug 22
Shareholders of First Bank of Nigeria (FBN) Holdings, Nigeria’s oldest financial institution, are growing increasingly anxious as recent crises and scandals have caused the company’s share price to plummet by over 50% in five months, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

FBN Holdings, which traded at ₦43.95 per share on March 19, has seen its share price fall to ₦20.35 as of Wednesday, according to data from the Nigerian Securities Exchange (NGX).

This dramatic decline is largely attributed to a series of controversies that have embroiled the company’s management and operations in recent months.

Asides the controversies surrounding the ownership of its controlling stake, a litany of court cases pending determination and a fraud case that led to the dismissal of over a hundred staff have raised concerns for investors holding the bank’s shares, sources confided in this newspaper.

Recapitalisation Stalled

These developments have cast a cloud of uncertainty on the bank’s recapitalisation plans as many of its competitors have completed a fresh capital raise in line with the standard set by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Recall that the Apex bank, under a new threshold released in March, stated that commercial banks with international authorization must have at least 500 billion naira, leaving banks with two years to meet the new standard.

FBN Holdings, although announced plans to raise some N300 billion through issuance of shares via a public offering in April, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is meant to approve it, is yet to take place.

A Lagos Federal High Court halted an AGM initially scheduled for August 22. The meeting is now postponed till September 3, according to a notice published on the NGX.

Investors are worried that these ongoing issues could lead to a further decline in the bank’s fortunes.

“These are the kind of issues that led to the fall of Skye Bank. If care is not taken, many local and foreign investors will pull out,” said an investor who has held shares in the company since 1995. He added, “The troubles are piling up day by day and it seems there is no end in sight. It is even difficult to hold an ordinary Annual General Meeting, not to mention raising capital.”

Ownership Dispute

The ongoing dispute over the ownership of FBN Holdings’ controlling stake has been a major cause of concern for investors. In December 2021, billionaire Femi Otedola became the company’s single largest shareholder.

However, he was soon displaced by Barbican Capital Limited, a company owned by Oba Otudeko, which now claims to hold a 15.01% stake in the company.

Barbican Capital has filed a lawsuit against FBN Holdings, challenging the reduction of its shareholding from 13.61% in December 2023 to 8.67%. The company submitted evidence from the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) to support its claim, showing that it actually owns 5.39 billion shares, representing 15.01% of the lender’s total shares.

This ownership dispute, along with the legal battles surrounding it, has further destabilised investor confidence.

‘Illegal’ 2023 AGM

Despite a court order prohibiting FBN Holdings in 2023, the bank proceeded with the meeting and this has resulted in multiple lawsuits filed by aggrieved shareholders.

One of the plaintiffs, Kujenya Olayiwola Yusuf, prayed the court to nullify all decisions made during the August 223 AGM, including the registration of the new share capital.

In another case related to the controversial AGM, a minority shareholder Yetunde Olowoyeye, argued that all the resolutions passed during the AGM are null and void, having been forged in the fires of judicial contempt.

The outcome of these cases, some shareholders say, will impact on the future of the company as a reversal of the decisions made at the AGM could set the bank on a path of collapse.

40 billion Fraud

While there is so much going on in the FBN Holding board room, the banking hall is also not spared of scandals. The bank sacked at least 120 employees after discovering a ₦40bn fraud, Tech Cabal reported in August.

Tijani Muiz Adeyinka, a manager on the operations team who reportedly diverted ₦40 billion over two years, has been on the run for weeks after his heist was discovered in May. The employees dismissed were accused of laxity in carrying out their duties and were told they should have spotted the fraud earlier.

The Tech Cabal report added; “Several employees were questioned by the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and detained at the Lion’s Building for at least six hours, one person with direct knowledge of the incident said. Those employees needed to post bail before they were released. Restrictions have been placed on all their personal accounts except their First Bank accounts. “

Meanwhile, Lagos-based banking and finance consultant, Hakeem Morakinyo, told POLITICS NIGERIA that FBN Holdings is in a precarious position as these crises continue to unfold.

“The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the bank can resolve its internal conflicts and restore investor confidence or if it will follow the same path as other failed institutions,” he said.

Politics / Alex Otti Will Be The Last Labour Party Governor Of Abia State – Kalu by Kosiso12(f): 8:38am On Aug 19
Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has declared that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will produce the next governor of Abia state.

Kalu, 53, the former spokesman of the green chambers represents Bende Federal Constituency under the APC.

Alex Otti, a former bank chief is the current governor of Abia state under the platform of the Labour Party.

Speaking in an interview, Kalu said:

”This will be the last time that a Labour governor will govern Abia state. I say it without mincing words. The next governor of Abia state will be APC governor.”

He, however, stated that his friends with the governor, and he has made his stance known to the Abia state chief executive.

His words: ”We are friends, we work together, but I will not be the number six citizen of the country and another party will govern my state. The next election in 2027, APC will be there.

”I have told him publicly and privately that the APC governor will be next in Abia state. How it will happen, I don’t know, but it will happen.

”I am confident because my government is working hard, the president is working hard and Abia will repay the president. The president that has given you the South East Development Commission will be repaid.

”A president that is appointing Abians into administration. A president that is attracting the dividends of democracy will be repaid. We are not ungrateful people. Monkey will not work and baboon chop. APC will not help the state to be strong and Labour will take the credit.

”APC will determine who will become the next governor of Abia state. I don’t care about who the person is. But, one thing I know is the platform, APC, will be the next governor of Abia state.

”We are ready to work for Abia state and we are tired of being outside the government at the center. We need to leverage the power of the center to increase the development of Abia state.”

Kalu further stated that Otti has done well, compared to other state governors, but insisted that Abia should be under the APC.

Politics / Economic Hardship : Angry Police Officers Protest Unpaid Salaries For 11 Months by Kosiso12(f): 11:47am On Aug 16
Economic Hardship : Angry Police Officers Protest Unpaid Salaries For 11 Months | #Politicsnigeria

A group of police officers under the banner of the Concerned Police Inspectors in Nigeria (CPIN) staged a peaceful protest in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, over the non-payment of 11 months’ salary arrears.

The officers marched to the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to express their grievances.

The leader of the delegation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “Our crime-fighting morale has been dampened by the lack of commitment to our welfare by the police authorities.”

The officers, who were promoted from Inspector II to Inspector I, amount to over 1,500 personnel from various police formations across the state.

They called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene and ensure the payment of their salary arrears, which they say is crucial for their survival in the face of the current harsh economic conditions in the country.

Copies of their appeal were also sent to the Presidency, the National Assembly, and the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The letter, addressed to the IGP, reads in part: “We are over 1,500 personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Akwa Ibom Command, promoted from Inspector II to Inspector I, by the IGP effective from September 10, 2023, with a signal dated March 21, 2024.

“Till date, we are still collecting old salaries as junior Inspectors instead of senior Inspectors since the IGP gave us the confirmation letters. So, we have nowhere to run to than to the federal government which is our employer.”

The officers expressed their discomfort with what they described as “inhuman treatment” by the IGP. They pointed out that after many years of service, they are being denied their entitlements.

“We can no longer feed our families or pay their bills due to the high cost of essential items in the market.

“It’s difficult to believe that after being celebrated with our families for being elevated to another level, the IGP is deliberately short-paying us for 11 months now, and by calculation, the shortfall is over N550,000 each,” they lamented.

The protesting officers urged the IGP to address their concerns promptly, stressing that the delay in payment is causing significant hardship for them and their families.

They also called on the federal government to intervene and ensure that they receive their due .

I Will Drop My Presidential Ambition if Jonathan Decides to Run in 2027 – PDP Governor Mohammed Declares | #Politicsnigeria

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has revealed that he will drop his presidential ambition if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to run for the top seat in 2027.

Mohammed, a governor under the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), made this statement on Thursday at the Government House in Bauchi when a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) urged him to consider running for the presidency.

Mohammed used the occasion to express his admiration for Jonathan’s leadership qualities and experience, saying he would be a better candidate for the job.

He said, “With regard to your call for me to present myself, I am still contemplating my chances as the leader of the opposition.

“I know there are good leaders within the PDP, especially my boss, Goodluck Jonathan.

“I have always said that as long as Jonathan is around, I will not present myself for leadership of this country, unless he decides not to run.

“If we can persuade him to come forward, I will support him with my blood. Out of modesty, he is still not ready. I hope you will meet him and encourage him to run.

The governor praised Jonathan’s past achievements, including his inclusive leadership style, initiatives for unemployed youths, and efforts to address the Almajiri system. “He will do a better job because he has the experience,” Mohammed said.

Mohammed also clarified that his criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration are intended to help put the country on the right path, adding that his responsibility as a leader is to speak out.

Politics / Presidential Jets Have Immunity – Justice Minister, Fagbemi by Kosiso12(f): 9:11am On Aug 16
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has declared that aircraft in the presidential fleet are sovereign assets used solely for sovereign purposes and are therefore immune from attachment by any entity.

This statement comes after three presidential aircraft undergoing routine maintenance in France were seized pursuant to ex parte orders issued by the Judicial Court of Paris.

Fagbemi stressed that the federal government is exploring both diplomatic and legal means to address the issue. He stated that the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Attorney General of the Federation are working together to ensure the discharge of the orders against the aircraft, which are protected by sovereign immunity.

“While further actions are being put in place to resolve the entire dispute through available legal means, the firm position of the federal government remains that the aircrafts in question are sovereign assets used solely for sovereign purposes and are therefore immune from attachment as Zhongshan has sought to do,’’ he said.

The minister’s statement was in response to the seizure of the presidential aircraft due to an alleged debt owed by the Nigerian government. He clarified that the orders were obtained by Zhongshan Industrial Investment Company Limited, a Chinese company seeking to enforce an arbitral award granted in its favour against the Ogun State government.
