The entire human body except for some sterile body parts serves as a natural habitat for some beneficial bacteria and fungi.

These bacteria and fungi are commonly referred to as microflora and are very useful to the body playing vital functions and preventing the outbreak of various infections and infestation.

However, these microflora can become a source of medical concern when they are destroyed, allowed to overpopulate, or migrate to parts of the body they ought not to be. At other parts of the body, microflora may become pathogenic causing severe health challenges.

Among the beneficial fungi that inhabit the human body is the yeast species called Candida. This fungus is normally found in the mouth, skin, and female vagina without causing any damage or harm.

The population of the fungus is kept constant and at bay so they continue to be good flora, however, when the environment is right, it can grow multiply and cause serious health concern.

When the fungus- yeast multiplies and the body could not keep the balance, the yeast causes an infection commonly known as yeast infection which is also medically known as candidiasis.

This disease condition is very itchy and makes one very uncomfortable.

Vaginal candidiasis (yeast infection) among women

Vaginal Candidiasis is very common among women and it is reported that about 80% of women are likely to suffer from candidiasis at least once in a lifetime.

In a female, the hormone estrogen supports the growth of microflora which are lactobacilli to help keep the balance of other microflora therefore promoting the health of the vagina.

This helps control yeast infection in women.

Thrush

This is a disease condition caused by the spread of yeast/candida in the mouth/oral cavity. It is common in people with weak immune responses and young people who are very active in MouthAction.

Common symptoms of thrush include;

White/yellow patches on the tongue roof and side of the oral cavity,Sore throat,Pains when swallowing etc.

Vaginal/Genital Candidiasis

This is a disease condition caused by the multiplication and spread of yeast/candida in the vagina.

This usually happens when the body cannot keep the microflora balance of the vaginal.

This imbalance can be caused by so many factors which include;

The use of some drugs and ointment/lubricantEating too much sugary foodPregnancy and unprotected sex etc.

It is paramount to know that yeast infection can be contracted from an infected person through unprotected sex.

Common symptoms of vaginal yeast infection 

They include;

These symptoms are severe for the females/women but mild in males though not common in males.

NOTE: it is important to note that the above vaginal yeast infection symptoms are not particular to vaginal candidiasis.

They are also common symptoms of other bacterial infections of the vagina. It is important to see a medical professional for medical diagnosis and treatment.

Invasive Candidiasis

This is a disease condition that occurs when yeast/candida gain access into the bloodstream which can happen through medical procedures leading to very severe health challenges.

When yeast enters the bloodstream, it is transported by the blood to various organs of the body such as the eye, brain, kidney, etc. where they cause the failure of these organs to function optimally.

Symptoms of this condition are mild such as fever and chills but the condition is so severe.

Just like what a popular adage says; “all that glitters is not gold’. This is to recount the fact that nothing is good or bad.
