The presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday night, March 21, filed a petition to challenge the declaration of Bola Tinubu of the ruling APC as the winner of the February 25 presidential election.

Atiku, in the petition marked: CA/PEPC/05/2023 filed at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, applied for the withdrawal of the Certificate of Return that was issued to Tinubu by INEC.

He maintained that the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election was “invalid by reason of non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022”.

“The 2nd Respondent was not duly elected by a majority of lawful votes cast at the Election.

The 2nd Respondent was at the time of the Election not qualified to contest the Election,” Atiku said while listing grounds he said the court should consider nullifying Tinubu’s election.

Nigeria ranks 95th happiest nation worldwide & sixth in Africa.

Nigeria has ranked 95th happiest nation in the world & sixth in Africa, with 4.981 points according to the latest edition of the World Happiness Report.

The report was released on Monday, March 20, by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network as part of the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness.

The report shows that Nigeria has increased 23 places in the world happiness ranking.

According to the report, Nigeria now ranks 95 of the 137 countries surveyed. The data shows that Nigeria ranks below Guinea, Ukraine, Ivory Coast and Gabon and above Cameroon, Mozambique, Iraq, Palestine and Morocco. Mauritius tops African countries in the yearly United Nations-sponsored index of 137 nations.

The report shows that for the sixth time in a row, Finland is the country with the happiest people, with a score significantly ahead of all other countries, while Afghanistan remains at the bottom of the ranking in a league table of 137 countries.

Titi Atiku Abubakar, wife of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has stated that Nigerians should not fidget on her husband, Atiku Abubakar, becoming the president due to his tribe.

According to Titi, her husband is a civilised Fulani man, not the ones that stay in the bush.

She stated this on Wednesday during the campaign rally of the party held at the Democracy Park in Ondo State.

“When Atiku becomes the president, Nigeria will definitely be better than what it is now.

“We won the last election, but we were rigged at the polls. Truly Atiku is a Fulani but he is not a bush Fulani but a civilised one. I have been with him for over 40 years.”

“During Obasanjo era, Atiku gathered the best brains for the administration. To all Yorubas, Atiku is for you and he will develop the country.

“When I become the first lady, I will take care of the youths and children. Scholarships will be given. Votes for Atiku because he knows the way. There is hunger in the land.”

Meanwhile, Atiku, urged Nigerians not to repeat the mistake of 2019 when they voted the ruling All Progressives Congress into power.

Atiku said “We started our campaign rally in Ondo State as the first state in the Southwest because of the support you gave us in 2023.

“We will make all the federal roads motorable. We will set aside enough money for the youths for jobs. In our policy document, we set aside $10billion dollars for youths. We must empower them.

“We will provide funds for universities, not what APC is doing. No one wants the repeat of APC again in Nigeria.”

The PUNCH reports that a Federal High Court sitting in Minna, the Niger State Capital, has ordered the arrest of General Faruk Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff.

General Faruk Yahaya’s arrest order was given over contempt.

Justice Halima Abdulmalik, who issued the warrant and presided over the case, said the order followed notice brought before the court in pursuant of order forty two rule ten of the Niger State High Court Civil Procedure 2018.

The judge ruled that the order is commuting Yahaya to be kept in Minna correctional custody for contentions of order of the court on October 12, 2022, adding that the COAS is to remain in custody till he has been “purged”of the contempt.

Also, the judge issued that the Commandant Training and Doctrine Command, Minna, Major General Olugbenga Olabanji, be arrested and imprisoned for a similar offense.

Justice Abdulmalik then adjourned the case to December 8 for continuation.

The PUNCH had reported also that on November 29 a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja sentenced the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to three months in prison for disobeying a court order.

The IGP’s committal followed a suit that was filed by a police officer, Patrick Okoli, who was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Police Force.

The court also ordered the payment of N10 million to the applicant, being special and general damages for the unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional denial of his (Patrick’s) rights and privileges as a Senior Officer of the Nigeria Police Force from 1993 till date.

Aminu Mohammed, who was recently arrested by security operatives for allegedly criticising the Wife of the President Aisha Buhari, has been arraigned by the police.


Recall that Adamu, a student of the Federal University, Dutse, Jigawa State, was picked up by security operatives for commenting on Aisha’s weight.

It was gathered that Aminu’s arraignment occurred on Tuesday before the FCT High Court No. 14.

According to his uncle, Shehu Baba-Azare, the police did not notify the family about the arraignment.

“It’s clearly a secret arraignment because they did not inform us. We are very concerned about his situation. He will sit for his final exam on December 5,” Baba-Azare said.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has apologised to Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari over the arrest of a student of the Federal University, Dutse Jigawa, Aminu Mohammed by Police operatives.
Many Nigerians condemned the alleged arrest of Mohammed over a tweet on the First Lady.


NANS claimed contrary to previous reports that Mohammed was arrested by the Department of State Services, he was arrested by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, who traced Mohammed to Jigawa where he was picked up.


NANS in a statement on Tuesday by its President, Usman Barambu, apologised on behalf of the Nigerian students to the First Lady, while also calling for Mohammed’s release.

“The leadership of NANS received with concern the news of the unlawful arrest of Mohammed by the Nigeria Police on the instruction of Aisha Buhari. Upon receiving the news, I, Mohammed’s family and friends swung into action to trace the whereabouts of Mohammed. After some days of searching, we got the information that he was at the police unit in Wuse Zone 2. I met with Mohammed at the police custody.

“It was alleged that Mohammed some weeks back posted Aisha Buhari’s picture on Twitter with the caption “Su mama anchi kudin talakawa an koshi” (translated from Hausa to ‘the mother has gotten fatter by eating masses’ money’).


“Just like the normal way angry citizens have different ways of expression on the social media. On November 18, 2022, the police from Abuja tracked Mohammed to the Federal University Dutse and picked him without any written/verbal invitation or informing the school management or his family,” Barambu narrated.

The NANS President alleged Mohammed was taken straight to the Presidential Villa where he was allegedly brutalised, beaten, maltreated and humiliated by the police “on the orders of Aisha Buhari, after which he was unlawfully detained at a police facility at Wuse Zone II till date. I, alongside our team of lawyers, met with Mohammed at the police facility where he confirmed the incident to me. Until now, Mohammed has not been arraigned by any competent court of law or granted bail by the police.”

“We want to, on behalf of all the Nigerian students, tender our unreserved apology to the First Lady Aisha Buhari, for the action of Mohammed which might have caused her and her family pains. However, as leaders and public office holders, we must overlook some criticisms if we want to really forge ahead and do the right thing.


“We demand a detailed explanation by the Nigeria Police on why they will go to the school premises and ‘kidnap’ a student without due process and took him straight to the Presidential Villa where he was brutalised which violates his fundamental human rights,” the statement said.

NANS said Mohammed had sustained various injuries and had not accessed any proper medical attention. “We call on the police as a matter of national interest and urgency to release Mohammed unconditionally or be prepared to face the Nigerian students.

“However, we are calling on our teeming students to be careful and apply decorum in dealing with people especially our leaders. They should be mindful of what they post on social media.

“We want to inform the general public to be patient as we await response and actions from the Inspector General of Police on a letter earlier sent to his office,” the President added.

THE National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has busted a major cocaine syndicate in Lagos following the arrest of a 56-year-old trafficker, Lawal Lateef Oyenuga.

Oyenuga was arrested on November 24 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, on his way to deliver 400 grams of the class A drug concealed in a pair of palm sandals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The agency also arrested a wanted notorious drug kingpin, Wasiu Sanni Gbolahan, popularly known as Teacher, who recruits mules for the cartel.

This was disclosed in a statement by NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday, November 27.

“NDLEA operatives attached to the screening point of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, had on Thursday 24th November intercepted Lawal Lateef Oyenuga with a pair of black palm sandals packed in the luggage he was going with to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian Airways flight.


“A thorough examination of the sandals revealed they were used to conceal two parcels of cocaine weighing 400 grams. This is barely a week after a 56-year-old widow and mother of four, Mrs. Ajisegiri Kehinde Sidika was arrested at the airport over her attempt to traffic 400 grams of cocaine concealed in her footwear to Makkah, Saudi Arabia on board a Qatar Airways flight,” the statement said.

The NDLEA said Oyenuga claimed he was recruited to traffic the drug by Gbolahan, aka Teacher, adding that he was first given some pellets of cocaine to swallow. However, when he couldn’t do that, he was given the ones concealed in the palm sandals.

“He said he resorted to the criminal trade to raise money to pay an examination fee for his daughter who is in Senior Secondary School class 3.”

According to the statement, NDLEA database reveals that Gbolahan has been linked to some previous attempts to traffic cocaine to Saudi Arabia and Dubai, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

He was earlier named as the one who recruited a BRT driver, Bolajoko Muyiwa Babalola, for Lagos socialite and owner of Adekaz Hotels, Ademola Afolabi Kazeem (a.k.a Alhaji Abdallah Kazeem Muhammed) to traffic drugs to Dubai.



Babalola was arrested on June 27 while taking 900 grams of cocaine to Dubai, while Ademola Kazeem was nabbed on November 10, barely ten days after he was declared wanted by NDLEA.

According to the anti-narcotic agency, an early-hours operation on November 25, led to the arrest of the kingpin, Gbolahan, who specialises in recruiting mules for drug barons in Lagos and its environs, at his residence located in the Ikorodu area.

The statement added that the 64-year-old Gbolahan is a housing and property agent with seven children and four wives, one of whom is now late.

Similarly, NDLEA operatives attached to the SAHCO export shed of the airport on November 22 intercepted a carton of food items used to conceal 500 grams of cannabis going to Dubai, UAE, while the owner, Uzoma Kingsley, was promptly arrested.

Both beaten in their opening game of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, Cameroon and Group G rivals Serbia convene for a crucial clash at Al-Janoub Stadium on Monday.

While the Indomitable Lions were tamed by Switzerland on Thursday afternoon, their European counterparts suffered at the hands of pundits' favourites Brazil; losing 2-0 to the Selecao despite keeping them at bay for an hour. Both now face an almost win-or-bust scenario in Al Wakrah.


Although they managed to hold higher-ranked opponents for the first half of their Group G opener, a 48th-minute goal from Yaounde-born Breel Embolo proved the difference in Cameroon's defeat to Switzerland.

As a result, the West African nation are still seeking their first victory at the World Cup since 2002, when current Cameroonian Football Federation president Samuel Eto'o was the last player to net a winner for his country on the global stage.

After their first-day setback, they have also lost eight World Cup matches in a row, so will now be eager to avoid equalling Mexico's unwanted record of nine in that regard.

Though the Indomitable Lions finished third at this year's Africa Cup of Nations, they have struggled for form ever since; winning just one of their last six outings - and that solitary success came against Burundi.

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and other members of the aggrieved Northern All Progressives Congress, APC camp have dismissed speculations that the group has endorsed the Obi-Datti presidency ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The group made the dismissal in a statement jointly-signed by Simon Achuba, Hon Albert Atiwurcha, Prof Doknan Sheni, Mela A. Nunge, SAN, Gen Ishaya Bauka Rtd, Prof Ibrahim Haruna and Mrs Leah Olusiyi.

Recall that the Chairman of the group and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, had said the group has endorsed the Labour Party presidential candidate, Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed.

According to him, Obi was endorsed, after painstakingly reviewing and analysing the alternative candidates.

But, Dogara and other members of the group have distanced themselves from the endorsement, saying they are yet to conclude consultations and that their position will be made public.

He said, “We want to draw the attention of the general public to the recent position canvassed by our Chairman, Engr B D Lawal as the position of our Group. We wish to state that necessary consultations have been concluded, and based on manifestly unassailable empirical data, the group is poised to adopt a position that will be made known to the public at an interfaith event to be held very soon.

“Suffices to say that no one in the group including the Chairman has been mandated to speak to the public about our position at this material time. Based on our modus Operandi, our position was meant to be presented to the general public at the event above referred to. That has not changed.

“Consequently, the decision to endorse a particular candidate and the statement credited to the chairman are solely the decision and views of the Chairman which he is absolutely entitled to but not that of the group. We hope this statement clears all the queries most of us have been inundated with on this all-important subject matter,” he added.

A chieftain of the Bayelsa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Preye Aganaba, has asserted that the presidential standard bearer of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will win the 2023 presidential poll by a landslide.
Aganaba, a founding member of the APC and former governorship aspirant in the State, made the assertion after emerging the Bayelsa State Coordinator of the Tinubu/Shettima Grassroots Independent Campaign Council (ICC) in Yenagoa.
The independent campaign council was inaugurated to complement the presidential campaign council ahead of the 2023 poll.


Aganaba said Tinubu’s victory was sure, stressing that the campaign structures were only concerned about the margin of difference between the APC candidate and the candidate that would come second at the poll.

Aganaba described the APC in Bayelsa as formidable and recalled that the party in the last election won the governorship poll and gave President Muhammadu Buhari over 42 per cent of the votes.

He said the ICC had structures in the 36 states and Abuja as well as in the 776 local government areas in the country.
He said Tinubu desired to have partners that would collaborate with him in governance and not supporters.

Describing the inauguration as a call to duty, he said it was the first time a presidential candidate established Indepdendent structures to complement the efforts of the party’s campaign council.


Aganaba said: “We have inaugurated the Bayelsa State chapter of the Independent Campaign Council for Tinubu/Shettima. It is a novelty, the first time a presidential candidate is having his own campaign structure aside from that of the party. So, our job is to compliment the presidential campaign council.

“For a state like Bayelsa where there is no governorship candidate, it also enhances the chances of the candidate because our job is to galvanise support that will be absent where there is no governorship candidate.

“What we want is not supporters, we want partners. That is what our candidate wants, who will partner with him to go to the election and also partner in government. Everybody knows that we are all grassroot politicians and that we will succeed at the end of the day.

”We have done well, Lagos is an example. Lagos is the most prosperous state in Nigeria today because somebody set up a process that has pushed Lagos to the most formidable state in Nigeria today. So we are not doing this because of our personal interest, we are doing it because of our love for Nigeria.

“Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a governor, his record is there for everybody to scrutinize. He is the best in the field and he is going to win the election, Nigerians know that. We are only thinking about his margin of difference between the first and the second candidate.”
