A Magistrate’s Court in Calabar, Cross River State, has remanded a woman, Uduak Monday, in Afokang Prison for pouring hot water on a 10-year-old boy, Okon Nse.

The 29-year-old woman allegedly poured hot water on the victim’s face in an attempt to wake him up.

The incident, which caused severe burns and injuries on the child’s face and arm, happened at about 5.30am on November 24.

A neighbour to the accused, Mr. Emmanuel Agan, had, on the said date, noticed the injuries on the child’s body and immediately reported to Basic Rights Counsel Initiative, a frontline child rights organisation in Calabar.

The organisation immediately swung into action by documenting the matter and arrested the perpetrator with the help of the Airport Division of the Nigeria Police in Calabar.

Upon rescue, the 10-year-old boy, who hails from Uruan in Akwa Ibom State, had told officials of the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative that he was a pupil of PCN Primary School in Akim, Calabar, until September when he stopped going to school after he was asked to repeat primary three.

Southern City News learnt that the accused woman was a food vendor along Etta Agbor Road in Calabar.

The boy said the woman poured hot water on him when she discovered that he did not wake up on time to carry out his domestic duties.

During the court sitting last Thursday, the magistrate, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, turned down Uduak Monday’s bail application and remanded her in prison until the next adjourned date of December 9.

Legal practitioner and child rights activist with Basic Rights Counsel, Mr. James Ibor, said his organisation had provided medical care for Nse and also written to the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Social Welfare to seek temporary accommodation for the child. The Imo State Police Command, in its bid to stamp out criminality in the state, has launched Operation Nkpochapu also known as ‘operation wipe out criminals’.
The Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, made the official disclosure of this operation at the council headquarters of traditional rulers in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
According to him, under Operation Nkpochapu, the state has been crime-mapped and all red and black spots have been identified and put under serious observation as other covert strategies had also been put in place to checkmate criminals in the state.
He also unveiled a new pamphlet and phone directory that contains the phone numbers of officers and men of the command who work round the clock for quick response and immediate actions.
This, he said, would aid communication, quick response and also enhance good police-civilian relationship.
Over 500 traditional rulers from various communities across Imo State gathered at their council headquarters to receive the leadership of the Imo State Police Command.
CP Lakanu, while appealing to the traditional rulers as custodians of laws and culture to use their good office and speak to their wards to desist from crime. He asked for their continued support and cooperation through giving adequate tip-off and information that will help the Police succeed.
The Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Samuel Ohiri, commended the command for the initiative.

President Goodluck Jonathan has said he fulfilled the campaign
promises he made to Nigerians in 2011. He stated this on Friday while
inaugurating a five-seater air-conditioned passenger inter-city rail
transport system that will link Makurdi, Benue State with
Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.
Vice President Namadi Sambo who represented Jonathan, said the country
had witnessed remarkable transformation, especially in the transport
sector during his administration.
He said,
