OOU PROTEST OUTCOME!!! Thank God for a save trip back to ago from abeokuta...... The end is always the Beginning. Note, no student was killed in the cause of the 2- days protest but a lot of students sustained injuries. Gov. Amosun said he was not aware that OOU still in first semester in 2013/2014 session, he pleaded that we give him One week, so that the committee he set up can look into the reduction of school fees and the reduction taken effect from this session, OOUites also stood that ground that if after the expiration of d one week, no positive response then Gov Amosun should be expecting all OOUites back to Oke-mosan for continuation of our protest until our demand are granted and the new school fees takes effect from this session. The SUG president also announced in the presence of the Governor that all OOUites should pend/stop payment of school fees until our demand are met. All arrested students has been released. thegreatman4ww: Do you justify aggressive public protest over consultation or peaceful protest to make clear your point.they have been consulting the governor 2months before now and nothing is happening, not until they gave 7days ultimatum. He made announcement of the reduction before the ultimatum elapse but only for reduction to take effect frm next session. The issue now is that almost all student haven't pay this session fee. |
OOU Abeokuta Protest Update..... Four injured as students clash in Ogun Four students were injured on Thursday as two factions of students from various state-owned tertiary institutions clashed in Abeokuta over the recent reduction of school fees announced by the state government on Tuesday. The fracas happened around Federal Secretariat, Oke Mosan, about 100 metres away from the governor’s office. The students who were from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Gateway Polytechnic, Igbesa, and other ICT polytechnics in the state broke into two factions, and they engaged each other in physical assault. The pro-Amosun faction had staged a solidarity march from Kuto Roundabout to the governor’s office at Oke Mosan to thank him for reducing the school fees, which was 61 per cent accross board. This faction, was received at the arcade ground by the state commissioner for education, Mr. Olusegun Odubela, deputy speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Tola Banjo and Special Assistant to the governor on Student affairs, Mr. Olusegun Clement. They were armed with placards which eulogised the governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. Odubela, who also eulogised the students for appreciating Senator Ibikunle Amosun’s gesture, advised them to take their studies seriously, and that he would deliver their message to the governor who was in Abuja. But the second faction did not see anything good in the fee reduction, as they saw it more as a mere ‘political gimmick’. This faction led by the Students Union Government President, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Olusegun Ifade, argued that the said fee reduction should have taken effect from 2013/2014 session, and not the 2014/2015 session announced by the state government. This faction had earlier addressed journalists at Iwe Irohin House, Oke Ilewo in Abeokuta. Ifade said they had made demand for fee reduction since 2011,which the governor failed to yield to. The students leader vehemently opposed the gesture, arguing it was greek gift coming at a wrong time, “because election is fast approaching.” Some of the students were armed with placards with various inscriptions, some of which read: ‘No reduction in 2013/2014, no vote’,’Amosun reduce our school fees’,’SIA must obey now’,and ‘Bring down our fees.’ They also demanded among others further reduction of the fees, as they argued that any fee above N50,000 was still too high. The students also headed for the governor’s office, and on the way they ran into the other faction, where a free-for-all ensued. After the dust settled, four of the students had been injured, as they were said to have hurled stones and other dangerous objects at one another. This led to a gridlock along the Oke Mosan- Kuto axis for some hours. |

Student leader calls governor a “pathological liar.” Some students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago- Iwoye, Ogun State, on Thursday marched on the Ogun State Government House in Oke-mosan, Abeokuta, to protest what they described as a “tactical and jamboree deduction of increased school fees”. PREMIUM TIMES gathered from the protesting students that Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s “jamboree” reduction of the university’s tuition fee was from about N192, 000 to about N176,000. However, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Segun Odubela had while announcing the reduction on Tuesday said medical students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU,, who are currently paying N301,610 will henceforth pay N176,596 from next session, representing a 41.4 per cent reduction. Mr. Odubela said students of the Faculty of Arts in the same university will be paying N81,112 instead of the current fee of N126,540, a 35.9 per cent reduction. Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES on phone, Falola Ahmed, the leader of the Ogun State chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Student, NANS, described Mr. Amosun as “a pathological liar” who wanted to use the “tactical deduction” to score cheap political goals. “The governor has been making political statements about the fees he reduced, but this is a jamboree reduction, it is a tactical deduction. If he must reduce the tuition fee, he must reduce it to the minimum affordable to the people of Ogun State,” Mr. Ahmed said. “As we speak, over 1,000 students of OOU are presently on their way to Oke Mosan to protest. We want Ibukunle Amosun to be sincere and stop media lies. He should fix the laboratories in the school.” He alleged that the governor had organised an opposing group, composed of students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, who would visit the Government House by 1 p.m. for a “thank you visit.” He also claimed that the governor paid the MAPOLY students N500 each. “The clashes will start between the aggrieved and the hired,” he stated. Another student leader, who gave his name as Success, said the students were revolting following a directive that the reduction in school fees would be implemented next session. “The school fees have been reduced by mere talk and not implementation. The implementation is billed for next session. We want it implemented now because it is a political gimmick,” Success said. The OP should do the needful to the title. some people no get brain sha, ona no go knw the something, ona go just dey post like say na nose ona take dey think. |
You guys don't get logic behind this, I think the Op is misleading everyone with the title of the topic. The issue is that, before Amosun emerge as the governor of Ogun state then in 2011, he came to OOU mini campus campaigning that he is going to reduce the school fee by 50% but fortunately he slashed it by 10% and that was the end, the minimum amount a student pay in OOU is #102,000 for faculty of arts while maximum of 350,000 for medicine. Before this time students have been agitating for the fee reduction. The school management are not helping the matter with their different policies which are on the bad side for the students. Fast forward to 2014, consultation were on going between the Sug, school management and the government before the announcement of the reduction 2days ago which is to take effect from next session. Ab initio, the students stand was that if the government is to reduce the fee, it is to take effect from this session because majority of the student haven't pay the exorbitant fee. Last bullet The student are protesting for the reduction to take effect from now, and that the maximum fee should be #50,000 |
