The Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Martin Cobham has ruled out the option of evacuating Nigerians from South Africa for now following strings of Xenophobic attacks. "I will not want to subscribe to immediate evacuation. We want to look at this thing in three phases - The lower, middle and Higher threat. We can only appeal to our people to abide by the host country's laws, avoid indiscriminate clashes and violence and work with local authorities" he said He also alleged that pictures and videos the internet about the xenophobic attacks were false and that most of them are from occurrences in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. http://lindaikeji..de/2015/04/nigerias-ambassador-to-south-africa.html?m=1

The 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers in the Ekiti State House of Assembly have begun moves that may lead to impeachment proceedings against Governor Ayodele Fayose. The embattled Speaker, Dr Adewale Omirin, has forwarded a notice of gross misconduct to the governor, which sources within the APC said was served on him during the week. A copy of the notice was also sent to his deputy, Dr. Olusola Eleka. But Fayose has advised the APC lawmakers to stop acting like “jesters”, describing the purported impeachment notice as the “joke of the century.” According to him, the script being acted by the APC is a failed one because no one, no matter how highly placed, will be allowed to test the will of the Ekiti people. This is as the factional Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Dele Olugbemi, dismissed the purported notice of impeachment and accused Omirin of forgery, impersonation and attempt to cause breach of public peace. In the letter by the 19 lawmakers titled, “Re: Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct,” sent to Fayose, the APC lawmakers listed eight impeachable offences against the governor. These offences bordered on impunity, brigandage, stalking and other constitutional breaches. These included alleged invasion of the House of Assembly with thugs and miscreants, instigating an unconstitutional takeover of the House by seven legislators to sit in contravention of Section 96(2) of the 1999 Constitution, and prevention of the 19 APC legislators from performing their duties with the use of security agents and armed thugs. Other allegations listed in the notice are: sponsoring an unlawful impeachment process in the house, spending Ekiti State funds without the requisite constitutional approval in contravention of the constitution and running the government without legally constituted Executive Council in contravention of Section 192(2) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They also accused the governor of operating an illegal 2014 budget as well as sponsoring and instigating illegal sitting of the House in contravention of Section 96(1) of the Constitution. It could, however, not be confirmed when and how the notice was served on the governor. When contacted by our correspondent on Saturday, Omirin was silent on how the notice was served on the governor. “I don’t want to talk about it now. But he (the governor) has been served,” he said. Asked how he was served, Omirin replied, “Just know we have served him. That is the most important thing.” Fayose was given seven days to respond to the allegations. Reacting to the allegations, the governor in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said Omirin had since ceased to be the Speaker, so cannot commence any impeachment moves against him. “The script being acted by the APC is a failed one because no one, no matter how highly placed will be allowed to test the will of Ekiti people. “The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly is Dele Olugbemi and not Dr. Adewale Omirin. “Omirin is already in court, challenging his impeachment and common sense dictates that when you are challenging an action already taken in court, you have accepted the consequences of such action pending the determination of the suit you filed.” Speaking on the development, the Acting state Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Joseph Adaraniwon, said the lawmakers should not be taken seriously because they had for long abandoned their responsibility. He also advised them not to get carried away by the victory of the APC candidate in the Presidential election, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) But the State Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, said it would be wrong to ascribe the move to the emergence of Buhari because the lawmakers were elected representatives of the people. “They have their constitutional roles to play. Their term has yet to come to an end, so it will be politically mischievous and morally indecent to say it is because of Buhari’s emergence.” In petitions to the State Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, and Director of the Department of State Service, Samuel Tamuno, the factional leader, Olugbemi, asked them to prosecute Omirin, for forgery, impersonation and attempt to cause breach of public peace. Olugbemi described the notice of impeachment as a ploy by the APC to distract the state government. http://punchng.com/news/apc-lawmakers-serve-fayose-impeachmentnotice/

The President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, has assured Nigerians that he would not condone looting of their common patrimony. He also promised to handle state resources with utmost responsibility and honesty. Buhari said this while receiving a delegation of the people of his home-state, Katsina, who came to congratulate him on his election as President, at his campaign office, in Abuja, on Saturday. He expressed his regret that the citizens had been impoverished by 16-year maladministration by the Peoples Democratic Party despite that the country received more income in the period than at any other time in the country’s history. The President-elect said savings from his war against corruption would be ploughed into education, with the objective of empowering the citizens. A statement issued by the Director of Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mr. Garba Shehu, quoted Buhari as saying, “If you give education to a man or woman, you have empowered them to be productive. There is no better way to empowerment.” Buhari equally expressed his commitment to multi-party democracy as the best system of government, while he appealed to all citizens to imbibe courage and perseverance. These virtues, he said, stood him in good stead in bringing victory to him after failing three times in the past presidential elections. The leaders of the delegation included the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Katsina State, Mustapha Inuwa; a former Governor of Katsina, Saidu Barda; a leading Muslim cleric; a representative of federal legislators; and a representative of the traditional institutions in the state. http://punchng.com/news/i-wont-condone-looting-of-public-treasury-buhari/

The Alaagba of Aagba, Oba Rufus Ogunwole, narrowly escaped death as hoodlums invaded his palace and vandalised the building before destroying vehicles parked within the premises among other important items. Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums first stormed the palace on Wednesday evening and went back later after destroying some valuables. Not satisfied with the level of destruction at their first attempt, the miscreants, who were identified to be operating under the name of ‘Odo Oru’, which literally means night youths, returned to complete the destruction of the palace. The youths, according to a palace source, carted away a crown, beaded walking stick and other paraphernalia of office of the monarch before they went away. It was learnt that the attack on the palace and some other places inside the town had political undertone. Armed security personnel have beefed up security in the town and normalcy has since restored in the troubled community. vehicles, including one Toyota Venza, and Toyota Camry were completely destroyed while several beaded crowns and staff were also carted away. Houses of some chiefs in the community, including the residence of Eesa of Aagba, Chief James Bamigbola, were attacked and his car was also vandalised. . A resident of the town who identified himself as Oluseye Aborisade, told our correspondent that the monarch was believed to be a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, saying that was why he was attacked. The Commissioner of Police in charge of election in Osun State, Mr. Sam Okaula, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our correspondent. Okaula said 10 suspects had been arrested in connection with the violence, adding that they would be charged to court if found culpable. http://.punchng.com/news/monarch-flees-loses-crown-as-hoodlums-sack-palace/ |

The spokesperson for President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team, Femi Fani-Kayode, on Wednesday stated that all his attacks against the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, and his party, the All Progressives Congress, during the electioneering, were what his job required of him and not personal. He also commended the APC campaign directorate for doing something “they believe in”. “There was absolutely nothing personal as regards this Directorate or myself. I had nothing personal against anybody. I was simply doing my job for which I have no regrets and I wish them well and I sincerely hope that they will take Nigeria to a level that we can all be proud of,” he said. Mr. Fani-Kayode also congratulated Mr. Buhari for his victory and also commended President Jonathan for conceding defeat. “We start by saying that we commend and we congratulate General Muhammadu Buhari for winning this election. We also wish to commend our President, President Goodluck Jonathan, for having the courage to concede that he has lost the election at the earliest moment and also for being able to stand up and rise above party politics and being able to speak like a statesman,” he said. The former Aviation Minister also prayed for peace in the country and success for Mr. Buhari. “May God grant each and everyone of us peace. May He watch over our nation. May He guide our President for the next two months whilst he is still in power and thereafter and may He guide and lead the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, in the herculean task that lies ahead for him. “My prayer is that he brings our nation together, heals the wounds and that he builds the bridges in terms of religion, ethnicity and region that he needs to build in order for us to make Nigeria a better place and to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country that she is destined to be,” he said. He called on Nigerians to continue to support the PDP, despite losing the election. He also asked for full cooperation to the incoming administration “and to remember that we are first and foremost Nigerians before anything else”. Mr. Fani-Kayode said he had no regret for serving Mr. Jonathan and the PDP. He also advised the PDP not to lose hope. “And having lost, it does not mean that it is the end to the world, it just means that we need to re-group, re-organise ourselves and begin the process all over again because another elections will come in a few years’ time. “And that is where we are today. We have conceded that we have lost. We acknowledge the fact that we fought a good fight. We do not have any fears about the future. We did the right thing during the campaign. We have no regrets about our candidate or the way in which we conducted our campaign and we will live to fight another day,” he said. source:premium times |
