I am liberian in the states. I eat cassava leaf,jallof rice,fufu and soup and ect. I am of bassa and vai tribe.

Does one only have to be born in Africa to be considered African?

What if one has African parents but was born in the states; can they consider themselves African?

Is it just about being involved in the culture(eating African food,Lang. African music,visiting their home country and etc)??

My parents are from Africa but they came to the States and had me( I was close to being born in Africa).
Basically, I was born in the states but I am very into African culture 100%(Been to Africa a couple of times as well,eat the food, cook the food,date African men,African music,wear African clothing sometimes and etc). Everytime someone ask me what I am, I say I am African.

The dilemma is that a few other Africans don't consider me African because of the way I talk (I don't have the African accent) but I can use it and I can speak broken English. Am i less African because I wasn't born there or don't have an accent?


So what makes one "African" or qualified to be considered and called "African".



Please give me your opinion.

Have you met are know anyone that has African parents,eats the food, but aren't really proud to be African. They don't really plan on visiting their country and don't even hang around other Africans.

I even know young adult females(whose parents are Africans) say they find African men ugly. I also know a few young adult males(whose parents are African) say they find African women ugly . I know several classmates like this and they hide the fact or aren't very proud of the fact of being African.

I mean one doesn't exactly have to wear Africa on your sleeve, so to speak, but at least let others be aware of your orgins and culture.

Why is this? Who is to blame in this situation? I have also seen this with some young kids as well(elementary school & middle school). I just find it pathetic and quite sad

Maybe it gets under my skin because I am proud to be African.

Please give me your two cents or if you seen similar situations.
