The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has defended its renewed enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and containers below 200 millilitres, insisting that the policy is driven by public health concerns rather than punishment of manufacturers. The agency clarified that no alcohol-producing company has been shut down, stressing that the restriction applies strictly to sachet alcohol and small plastic or glass bottles below the approved volume.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the enforcement was in line with a Senate resolution and the agency’s mandate to protect public health, particularly among young people.

"NAFDAC has resumed enforcement of the ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small-volume PET or glass bottles below 200ml,” Adeyeye said.

She explained that the policy was introduced to address the growing problem of alcohol abuse among minors and young adults.

According to Adeyeye, small and inexpensive alcohol packs have made it easier for underage drinkers to access alcohol without detection.

She noted that warning labels such as “Not for children” have proven ineffective, as many parents remain unaware that their children consume sachet alcohol due to its low cost and easy concealment.

“Many parents do not even know their children consume sachet alcohol because the pack size is small, cheap and easily concealed,” she added.

The NAFDAC boss cited reports from schools, including an instance where a pupil allegedly claimed he could not sit for an examination without first taking sachet alcohol.

NAFDAC further explained that the renewed enforcement followed an agreement reached with alcohol manufacturers in 2018 to phase out sachet and small-pack alcohol by January 2024.

She said the deadline was later extended to December 2025 to allow producers sufficient time to adjust.

“This ban is not punitive; it is protective. The health of a nation is its true wealth,” Adeyeye stated.

While acknowledging concerns raised by industry groups and labour unions over possible job losses, NAFDAC maintained that no further extensions would be granted.

The agency urged full compliance from manufacturers and distributors, reiterating its commitment to safeguarding public health and reducing alcohol-related harm across the country.

A Magistrates’ Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the road accident that claimed the lives of two aides of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Kayode was granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, while the court adjourned the matter to February 25, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.

The 46-year-old defendant is standing trial in connection with the fatal crash that resulted in the deaths of Latif Ayodele, Anthony Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach.
Charges Against the Driver

Kayode was first arraigned on January 2, 2026, before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun, where he was charged on four counts bordering on:

Dangerous driving resulting in death

Reckless and negligent driving

Driving without due care causing bodily harm and property damage

Operating a vehicle without a valid national driver’s licence

The offences are said to contravene provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
Court Proceedings

During the hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Nijiwe Richard, requested an adjournment to enable the case file to be forwarded to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s Office, through the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP), for legal advice.

However, the defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the application, informing the court that the defence was ready to proceed with the case.

The magistrate, nonetheless, upheld the prosecution’s request and adjourned the matter to the new date, while granting bail to the defendant.

The tragic accident occurred on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, when a Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua, Kayode, and the two aides reportedly collided with a stationary truck.

While Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries, Ayodele and Ghami were pronounced dead at the scene.

Anthony Joshua was later discharged from hospital after being certified medically fit. He subsequently visited a funeral home in Lagos with his mother to pay his last respects before the remains of his aides were flown to the United Kingdom.

The case later took a controversial turn following allegations that activist Harrison Gwamnishu diverted ₦5.4 million from the ransom funds meant to secure Were’s release. Gwamnishu has consistently denied the allegation.

A Lagos man, Olumuyiwa Adjoto, has been sentenced to double life imprisonment for defiling his wife’s 6-year-old niece, following his conviction on two counts of defilement and sexual assault by penetration. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The judgment was delivered on Monday by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, after the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt two of the three counts filed against Adjoto. He was discharged on the third count of indecent treatment of a child.

Adjoto was charged by the Lagos State Government on a three-count charge of defilement, sexual assault by penetration, and indecent treatment of a child.

During the trial, the State Counsel, Ms Bukola Okeowo, called four witnesses: the survivor, her mother, a medical officer, and an investigative police officer. Adjoto testified as the sole defense witness.

The prosecution informed the court that the offences occurred on April 22, 2022, around 1:00 p.m. opposite Erubami House, Primary School Road, Mowo, Badagry, Lagos State, when the child was left in his care while the wife went to the market.

The offences were stated to contravene Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015.

Justice Oshodi found Adjoto guilty of defilement and sexual assault by penetration, noting the gravity of the offences and the severe psychological and physical impact on the child.

“You penetrated her vagina and anus, causing immense physical and psychological trauma,” Oshodi said.

“Dr Olatunji testified about the devastating effects on the child, including fear, difficulty trusting people, social withdrawal, possible urinary incontinence, and declining academic performance. Long-term effects may include depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and difficulty maintaining relationships.”

The judge sentenced Adjoto to life imprisonment on both counts, with the sentences set to run concurrently. In addition, the court ordered that his name be entered into the Sex Offenders Register maintained by the Lagos State Government, in accordance with Sections 33 and 38 of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law 2021.

“These sentences reflect society’s condemnation of such heinous acts against children,” the judge added.

The Lagos State Government has ordered a postmortem examination following the reported deaths of nine-month-old identical twins, Testimony and Timothy Alozie, who allegedly passed away about 24 hours after receiving routine immunisation at a primary health care centre in the state. The tragic incident sparked public outrage after the twins’ father, Samuel Alozie, popularly known on TikTok as Promise Samuel, shared emotional videos online showing the bodies of his sons in separate body bags while recounting the events that led to their deaths.

In a viral follow-up video shared on Thursday, January 15, Alozie said he took his children for routine immunisation on the morning of December 24, 2025. According to him, the twins became unusually weak shortly after the injections.

“They could not eat, they could not play, they could not even disturb as they used to. They were just weak,” he said.

Alozie stated that a nurse at the health centre advised the parents to administer paracetamol if the children developed a fever. He said they followed the instruction and also bathed the twins in cold water, but their condition worsened.

“After the injection on the 24th, they were very weak. We gave them paracetamol as advised. My wife bathed them in cold water. On the morning of December 25, both of them died at the same time,” he said.

He maintained that the twins had been healthy since birth and had received all previous vaccinations without complications.

“I’m confused. How can I lose two children at once? They were not sick. I only took them for immunisation because it was the right thing to do,” he added.

The [/b]grieving father also claimed that the nurse who administered the vaccine was not the regular health worker usually assigned to attend to his children.

He rejected an initial explanation allegedly given by staff of the health facility, which suggested that the deaths may have been caused by food contamination.

[b]“They said food bacteria killed my children. Food that I have been giving them from one month to nine months did not kill them,” Alozie said.

Reacting to the incident, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Mustafa, confirmed that investigations were ongoing and that the state government had ordered a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.

“We sympathise deeply with the family. We understand the grief they are going through, but proper procedures must be followed. The police are investigating, and the state is also conducting its own inquiry,” Mustafa said.

He added that the vaccine administered had been used on many children before and after the incident without recorded complications.

According to him, the bodies of the twins have been deposited at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) morgue, and the findings of the postmortem will be made public.

“Once the postmortem results are available, we will communicate appropriately,” he assured.

Despite the assurances, Alozie expressed fears that the investigation might be compromised to protect the government health facility. He appealed for legal and human rights assistance, saying he lacked the resources to pursue the matter alone.

“This is government to government. I need justice for my children. If you are a lawyer or human rights advocate, please help me,” he pleaded.

The Lagos State Government has arrested no fewer than 281 suspected street urchins and criminal elements, popularly referred to as “Omotaku,” during a coordinated enforcement operation across major roads and hotspots in the state.

“It’s just one smelling place like that. They packed us there like sardines and gave us terrible food,” he said.

He went on to appreciate fellow artist Zlatan Ibile, who reportedly sent him meals during his detention period.

“Funny enough, it was Zlatan that was sending me food. Zlatan is not even a friend — that’s my blood. He sent someone to get good food for me because the food there was bad,” Oladips explained.

The rapper questioned why he was kept for nearly a week when no evidence of financial crime was found against him.

“Why did I spend four to five days there when you people didn’t find anything on me, not even a single thing? And they still collected ₦10 million from me before releasing me,” he added.

Fear of Challenging the System

When asked if he planned to take legal action against the EFCC, Oladips expressed skepticism, citing his lack of influence and distrust in the system.

“Who is my father? At the end of the day, who is my father? It’s just me and my truth,” he said during the podcast.
“It’s not something I will want to pursue. I don’t even know how the system works. If I was doing Yahoo, I’d be on their page by now. They didn’t find anything on me, and they know it.”

Oladips emphasized that his claims are based on firsthand experience and maintained that the ₦10 million payment had no legal justification.

“They collected money from me before releasing me. They didn’t find anything on me. So what was the money for? What was all that stress and suffering for? It’s just Nigeria. Nigeria happened to me,” he concluded.

EFCC Yet to Respond

As of the time of this report, the EFCC has not issued any official statement addressing Oladips’ allegations. The claims have, however, sparked a heated debate online, with many Nigerians calling for transparency and accountability within the agency.

Social media users have flooded the rapper’s comment sections, demanding answers from the EFCC and sharing similar stories of alleged harassment and extortion by operatives of the anti-graft body.

The incident adds to growing concerns about the methods and integrity of the EFCC’s operations, particularly regarding arrests of entertainers and young Nigerians suspected of cybercrime without substantial evidence.

For now, the nation watches closely to see if the EFCC will break its silence or investigate the shocking claims made by Oladips — a case that has once again put Nigeria’s justice system under public scrutiny.

The House of Representatives has called for urgent measures to regulate arbitrary rent increases by landlords across the country, proposing a nationwide cap limiting annual rent hikes to no more than 20 percent of existing rates.

This followed the adoption of a motion on the “Need to Regulate Arbitrary Rent Increase and Protect Tenants from Exploitation” moved by Hon. Bassey Akiba during Thursday’s plenary.

Presenting the motion, Akiba cited examples from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where rents in some neighbourhoods with newly constructed roads have reportedly jumped from N800,000 to as high as N2.5 million per annum, placing an unbearable financial burden on tenants.

Akiba decried the “wanton exploitation” by property owners who take advantage of public infrastructure improvements to impose arbitrary rent increases, saying such practices undermine the government’s welfare initiatives and could drive vulnerable citizens into crime to meet inflated demands.

Adopting the motion, the House urged the Federal Government to prioritise investment in affordable housing schemes to reduce pressure on the rental market and ensure access to low-cost housing for citizens.

It also urged the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to collaborate with state governments to enforce rent control measures, ensuring that public infrastructure projects do not trigger exploitative rent hikes, and to cap rent increases at no more than 20 percent of existing rates, irrespective of new developments or other factors.

The House further mandated its Committee on Housing and Habitat to ensure compliance with the resolutions and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
