Era of Rice importation gone for good - Ambode
…As Lagos, Kebbi Partner On Food Security, Job
Creation
…Plan 70 Percent Production Of Nigeria’s Rice Needs
In line with the persistent calls for a paradigm shift
from over dependence on oil as the major earner of
the country, the Lagos State Government and Kebbi
State on Wednesday entered into a partnership on
the establishment of a commodity value chain that
will give a quantum leap to food processing,
production and distribution.
The partnership is aimed at bringing about national
food sufficiency and food security, as well as creating
employment and wealth distribution for the benefit
of both states and the nation in general.
Speaking at the official signing of a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) between the two states held at
the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja, Governor
Akinwunmi Ambode said the partnership signaled
the commencement of a new beginning of
cooperation and common-sense revolution, which is
line with the change mantra of All Progressives
Congress (APC) that calls for patriotism in all facets
of life.
Governor Ambode, who said the partnership would
bring an end to the era of imported rice in the
country, noted that there was no doubt about the
economic prowess of the country to produce rice
locally.
“This is the first time in the history of Nigeria that
two States are collaborating to develop their
agricultural potentials. We have the economic
prowess to produce rice locally. The era of imported
rice is gone. The reality is for all of us to embrace the
consumption of local foodstuff and commodities,” he
said.
The Governor acknowledged the fact that the future
of Lagos is partly tied to deliberate resolution on food
security, and that food production and self-sufficienc
y required immediate attention at policy and
strategic levels to sustain the country, hence the
need for the partnership.
“Lagos State is the largest consumer of food
commodities in Nigeria by virtue of our State
population. We have the market, with the required
purchasing power also. Lagos State has an estimated
consumption of over 798,000 metric tonnes of milled
Rice per year which is equivalent to 15.96 million of
50kg bags, with a value of N135 billion per annum,”
he said.
In addition to rice, Governor Ambode said Lagos is
presently consuming 6,000 herds of cattle daily
which may increase to 8,000 in the next 5 years,
adding that the bulk of vegetables produced in the
country eventually end up in the Lagos markets.
He added: “Lagos State is one of the largest
producers of poultry and thus has a large demand for
maize for livestock feed production. The State also
houses most of the industrial users of wheat and
sorghum; mostly flour mills, bakeries, breweries and
food manufacturers.
“Kebbi State, on the other hand, is blessed with a
vast arable land suitable for the cultivation of Rice,
Wheat, Ground nut, Maize, Sorghum and Sugar cane.
“It is an agrarian State with over 1.2 million hectares
of arable land characterised by very large floodplains,
lowland swamps and gentle slopes. In the 2014 /
2015 wet season, over 600,000 Hectares of land was
deployed for Rice cultivation in the three senatorial
areas of the State.
“The people are traditionally Rice farmers with
average land holding of about 10 Hectares. Presently,
Kebbi has over 50,000 metric tonnes of paddy in
store produced from the last 2 planting seasons.
“With these considerations in mind, Lagos State and
Kebbi State have decided to collaborate and exploit
our areas of comparative advantage to create value
for both States. This alliance will ensure Food
Security, job creation, increase in farmers’ income
and the overall improvement in the living conditions
of the residents of both states through wealth
creation and poverty reduction.
“This collaboration is in line with the clarion call and
policy direction given by the President, Muhammadu
Buhari, on the need to feed ourselves,” Governor
Ambode stated.
The joint venture between the two states, Governor
Ambode explained, will be implemented using a
Special Purpose Vehicle known as LASKEB
Agricultural Production and Marketing Company
(LAPMCO), adding that the major areas of focus will
be the development of commodity value chains with
emphasis on Rice, Wheat, Ground Nut, Onions,
Maize/Sorghum and Beef.
Speaking further on the agreement, Governor
Ambode said: “The numerous thousands of our
market women and men can become key employers
of labour as distributors of ‘Ibile Rice’. We can also
brand and package rice in the names of our
distributors and market women. As a State, we shall
adopt our local rice as a State dish in all
ramifications.
“The special purpose vehicle will allow the entrance
of private sector investors and other states in
expanding the rice mill at Imota, Ikorodu and other
locations. We have already designated the 100
hectare land at Imota as the Agric Park in the State.
Other locations in and outside the State will be
vigorously activated to fulfill our mission in record
time.”
Also speaking at the event, which was attended by
top government functionaries, traditional rulers and
members of the Organised Private Sector (OPS) from
both states, Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Atiku
Bagudu thanked Governor Ambode for providing
leadership and innovation that brought about the
partnership, adding that same was in line with the
effort of President Buhari and Vice President Yemi
Osinbajo to restructure Nigeria away from over
dependence on oil.
Governor Bagudu said in the world of genetically
modified food, the partnership between Lagos and
Kebbi was an additional motivation to provide
certainties for the people in terms of food production
and sufficiency, and that the goal is to produce 60 to
70 percent of Nigeria’s Rice needs, and replicate
same in other food items.
He said the agreement had the broadest public
acceptance in Kebbi State, and that the people,
especially farmers in the state, are delighted to
partner with Lagos, which he described as the most
entrepreneurial part of Nigeria.
He said Lagos and Kebbi have had a long history of
trade, and that the signing of the MoU was a further
way of cementing the relationship with the view to
make the people to get richer.
“Lagos is the most entrepreneurial part of Nigeria.
Lagos, if it were a country on itself, is a country that
other states will be going to establish a relationship
and so why not state to state. So, what we are doing
is that we are pioneering a collaboration that will
bring other states on board later and we believe that
our potentials is enormous and we must have
pacesetters to start that process of joint collaboration
for our collective good,” Governor Bagudu said. 2 Likes

Former Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada It was a near-tragic outing for former Governor of Kogi State, Idris Wada, on Tuesday as thugs hauled stones at his vehicle at the State governorship election tribunal sitting at the Jabi district of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The incident occurred about 1:35 pm at the premises of an Abuja High Court where the tribunal was located. Wada was at the tribunal where he is challenging the return of Alhaji Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the November 21, and December 5, state governorship election. The thugs who besieged his vehicle outside the tribunal chanting solidarity songs in favour of APC, later went wild and started hauling stones at his vehicle. His driver sensing danger quickly sped off at a neck- breaking speed even as security operatives were left helpless. Reacting to the development, the governor described the attack on him as barbaric, acts of beastality and in responsibility to recourse to acts of thuggery. His Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Jacob Edi who spoke on the matter condemned the development in its totality. “To think that this took place in the premises of a court of law is highly condemnable whoever their paymasters are. For us, no condition will make us recourse to thuggery. “Thuggery in obsolete and no longer lucrative. One of the cardinal achievements of Capt. Wada is that he put an end to thuggery because he believed that energies of the youth should be put into productive use and not destructive acts.” Meanwhile, the tribunal has adjourned hearing of the petition between the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Yahaya Bello to April 11 and 12, 2016. The petition by Labour Party (LP) against Yahaya Bello was adjourned to April 6 and 7, 2016. In the petition by Wada, proceedings were stalled following the inability of counsel to parties to resolve the issues arising from the schedule of documents to be tendered by the petitioner. Accordingly, the tribunal adjourned till April 13. Wada’s petition, which is been handled by Chief Chris Uche, (SAN) leading two other Senior Advocates of Nigeria among other lawyers, had the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Alhaji Bello and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as respondents.

Consider this: When Inventions go wrong: A robot meant to show love goes too far! Researchers at Toshiba’s Akimu Robotic Research Institute were thrilled ten months ago when they successfully programmed Kenji, a third generation humanoid robot, to convincingly emulate certain human emotions. At the time, they even claimed that Kenji was capable of the robot equivalent of love. Now, however, they fear that his programming has taken an extreme turn for the worst. Kenji was part of an experiment involving several robots loaded with custom software designed to let them react emotionally to external stimuli. After some limited environmental conditioning, Kenji first demonstrated love by bonding with a a stuffed doll in his enclosure, which he would embrace for hours at a time. He would then make simple, but insistent, inquiries about the doll if it were out of sight. Researchers attributed this behavior to his programmed qualities of devotion and empathy and called the experiment a success. The trouble all started when a young female intern began to spend several hours each day with Kenji, testing his systems and loading new software routines. When it came time to leave one evening, however, Kenji refused to let her out of his lab enclosure and used his bulky mechanical body to block her exit and hug her repeatedly. The intern was only able to escape after she had frantically phoned two senior staff members to come and temporarily de-activate Kenji. Ever since that incident, each time Kenji is re- activated, he instantaneously bonds with the first technician to meet his gaze and rushes to embrace them with his two 100kg hydraulic arms. It doesn’t help that Kenji uses only pre-recorded dog and cat noises to communicate and is able to vocalize his love through a 20 watt speaker in his chest. Dr. Takahashi admits that they will more than likely have to decommission Kenji permanently, but he’s optimistic about one day succeeding where Kenji failed. Be careful, that person you dream to have in your arms might be a robot too! |

This is a real story of a young Ex-Unilag girl who
passed away last month. Her name is Lola. She was
hit by a car at Oyingbo on her way to work at Apapa.
She was working with MTN. She had a boy friend
named Emeka, a banker who was recently
transferred to Abuja. Both of them were true lovers.
She spent half of the day and most night talking
with Emeka on her phone. Lola's family knew about
their relationship. Emeka was very close to Lola's
family in spite of the tribal differences. (just imagine
their love.) Before she passed away at LUTH, she
told her friends:"If I pass away, please bury me with
my cell pho ne"She also said the same thing to her
parents. After her death at LUTH, the attendants
couldn't carry her body to the mortu ary. A lot of
them tried to do so but couldn't. So they went to call
a priest in church who had the gift of
communicating with the dead. He sprinkled some
salt and water on the body and started speaking to
himself slowly. After a few minutes, he said:"this girl
is missing something". Then her friends told them
about her intention to b e buried with her phone.
They asked them to bring a coffin, and then they
opened it and placed her phone inside the casket.
After that, they tried to carry the body which could
now be moved and they carried it away easily. Ever
yone was shocked. A day later which was Lola's
birthday, Emeka came to their hou se with gifts but
was so shocked to receive the news. He couldn't
believe because he still spoke with Lola the.
previous day, He then tried calling her phone again
in their presence and behold! It rang and Lola picked
it and they were chatting. The y called the priest to
come and intervene and when he came and prayed
for 5 hou rs,It was revealed that MTN is everywhere
you go. Chill! Don't insult me yet, because I'm also
looking for the idiot that composed this......lolz. |

LETTER TO DR GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN Sir, You have left Nigeria in a mess that will take 20years to erase. When you were in U.S in November Last Year , you said no arms money was diverted, You claimed the new administration lied.. yet today, we have confessions from members of your party and other parties who have admitted collecting huge sums from NSA. You have refused to comment on this issue. You shared dollars and ruined our Naira, Sir. You awarded multi-billion Naira contracts to militants while you also admitted doing nothing for even your people in the Niger delta. Mr Former President, You ruined Nigeria..... You ruled when crude oil was sold for over $100 per barrel, you did nothing for Nigeria. The rail Projects are funded by Chinese loans.. Soldiers complained for lack of arms , you took them to prison instead. Have you heard the confession of your Chief of Defence Staff Rtd Air Chief Marshal Badeh..Sir the man said no arms were bought to fight bokoharam. Sir at the opening of your campaign in Lagos in 2014, You claimed that you couldn't tackle Bokoharam because arms were not bought in the 80s... Mr Ex President you did Nigeria great disservice. You are not an honest man. while Nigerians were roasted with bombs everyday, the money for arms was used for your re-election, God being kind to man.. You lost that election. That Bokoharam that took you a whooping 6years to tackle, has been substantially degraded. We no longer see them killing 100s of Nigerians and bragging. Conscience will never allow you speak on National TV in the country again. I have written the truth, based on facts, I challenge you Sir to check these facts if you never said the things herein. Now I wait to see insults flow from haters of truth and worshippers of money and man........................... Pls. Let comment SAI BABA!!! 1 Like |
