This is a criteria before you get accreditation by NUC.

The University Council will review your publications, membership or fellowship of relevant association, number of PhD students you have supervised and the depth of research conducted at PhD.

That's all.

You will automatically be awarded an Adjunct or Visiting Professor status within such University.

My dad enjoyed same status at Afe Babalola University at Inception.

However, my dad is an academic genius and had lectured in three Universities with his PhD at Senior Lecturer status, was a fellow of his association and has supervised PhD students.

He was refered as Dr. his former university but had the complements of a Prof. in Ado Ekiti.

The truth is that Professor is the Highest academic rank in British Academic system which Nigeria runs or copied. It's not the same in American System and Many other countries. In the American System a graduate assistant is an Assistant Professor, A junior Lecturer is a Professor.

American Professor is equivalent to Nigerian term Lecturer.

The fraud, since Obsanjo's era, Almost all VCs in Nigerian Universities abuse their powers by inviting their Chronies from US universities back home and giving them huge appointments as Professors. It's very very common in places like UNN, with the likes of Professor Nebo, the disgraced power Minister.

It's a shame that Nigerian academics including ASUU cannot establish their own ranking equivalence, I wonder what kind of peer reviewed research these so called Professors are engaged in when they cannot even establish who their peers are.

For the avoidance of doubts, The equivalent of a Full Professor in the American System is an Endowed Chair (also called Distinguished Professor). This Highest Academic Title is far more rare in the American system than in the cupboard Professors without Industry relevance that Nigerian Universities are filled with.

Why, Nigerian system Professors are appointed in process tainted with internal politics. INEC has further worsened it by using tainted VCs as returning officers. Every politician is grooming a would be professor in his nearest Federal University.

In the American System, An Endowed Chair sits on an Industry or Charity funded Research Pool. That rank is not just a mark of academic prowess, but also Industry Prowess and Recognition. It is the Chair that recruits and Pay Graduate Research fellows. So you can understand the kind of fund in question. You cannot sit on a fund if your research work cannot sustain the fund and the interest of the fund donors.


Any Nigerian you see that tells you an American University made him a Nigerian equivalent Professor, and he still had a reason to leave the position for a Nigerian position is a Fraudster. This includes the Fraudster from Ebonyi state that Umahi was hoping to put as UNIZIK VC for manipulating Ebonyi state Elections. ASUU must insist that Academics are left out of Elections or these frauds will keep deepening at Geometric pace.
