We encourage our children to go to school and conquer theoretical analysis and reasoning of all kinds without emphasis on the practical aspect or alternatively the application of these theories. However, I will give anything and everything into learning how to build robots and cybernetic organisms. I appreciate the practicality of academics as compared to showing-off of same which ultimately gives a feeling of self-aggrandizement that one is actually knowledgeable...

Thank God I have people that reason like I do. I think those examiners were even oblivious of this subtle error. I started my workings the same way this sister pointed but lost interest as the problem became rather more complicated. The moment you as a Mathematician start getting more complicated results which are not reasonable you retrace your steps.

It is unfortunate that the so-called mathematicians don't reason deeply anymore. You are the only one that pointed that error out and I appreciate you for it. Thank you

Common confusion. If you say 5 times OLDER THAN, you expect x-y = 5y therefore x = 6y
If you mean 5 times AS OLD As, then x = 5y
Where x and y are the ages of father and son respectively. Math teachers should learn to state questions correctly.

I would be grateful for the help - I am confused with underlined explanation. (from Gmat sentence correction)

Right: The man is FIVE TIMES AS OLD AS his grandson.
Wrong: The man is FIVE TIMES OLDER THAN his grandson.

The first sentence means that the mans age = 5 x his grandsons age. In the second example, the author is technically saying that the man is six times as old as his grandson. This meaning is unlikely; the author probably meant “five times as old.”

Why 'five times older than' equals 'six times as old as'?
