Having announced the longlist and the shortlist within the month of June 2016, the top 3 entrants who also double as prize winners are as follows:

The Chair of the Judging Panel, Mallam Denja Abdullahi (President, Association of Nigerian Authors) while making available the final result said, “The entries reviewed from the 2016 PIN students’ poetry competition were of high quality, reflecting a refreshing diversity of themes and styles; so much so that one can conclude that poetry is gradually emerging from being considered by the multitude as a closet art to being regarded as a capable carrier of weighty messages encased in melody.”

Note: The top 3 entrants will receive their cash prizes of ₦100,000, ₦50,000 and ₦30,000 respectively today 30th June, 2016 via their respective bank accounts. They will however be formally awarded at a Grand PIN Awards Ceremony scheduled for the later part of the year.

Literature / The Newness Of Life (A New Year Poem) by larryfreedom(m): 1:21pm On Jan 01, 2014
New is the year
New are the wares
New are the resolutions
Likewise the aspirations
New is the spirit
Strange to retreat
New is the vibrancy
A force of potency.

Life offers newness
To wear out oldness
Oldness that bores my heart
Newness that gladdens my heart
Be merry, new is the life
It holds no place for strife.

The desire for change
Has no definite range
Time to change ways
Rays of hope
Help you cope.

A blissful and prosperous year to you all.

Poems For Review / The Eagle Is Gone (A Tribute Poem to Nelson Mandela) by larryfreedom(m): 12:18am On Dec 06, 2013
The streams fled backward
The hills became valleys
The cloud birthed sunrays.

The sun rained and rained
The lions crowed and crowed
I smiled to cry.

The sky opened its door
A golden feet saw I at a glance
Audaciously he trod
with a rod in his hand
Freedom pasted on his forehead
Equality wore him as cloth
Courage he had on as his sandals.

A fist held he up
Victory signified
Madiba dignified.

The eagle is gone to rest
He has given humanity his best.

In honour of my father- Nelson Mandela.

Politics / Free Mandela From Condemnation And Bigotry by larryfreedom(m): 10:31pm On Jun 27, 2013
It aches my heart to read the comment of a fellow who accused Mandela of selling out his people by continuing the white agenda when he became the first black president of South Africa inorder to gain recognition, fame and acceptability. What a demeaning comment!

Nelson Mandela acted as Moses for the South Africans and you can't accuse him for the black's woes thereafter.Moses helped free his people from the Egyptians but that does not mean he could be accused of the woes that befell the Israelites after being free from captivity.Freedom is the greatest gift one can offer another.Being jailed for 27 years so as to eradicate apartheid is enough to overshadow any flaws you might relate to Mandela.

With freedom comes great responsibility...He fought for freedom because he believed man should have a mind of his own and also be allowed to freely pursue his cause."A man can free another from physical captivity but not mental captivity"...Madiba freed his people physically but mental freedom can only be gained internally.
The condition of blacks in South Africa might not be pleasing, but never blame Madiba. He offered freedom, destroyed inequality, restored dignity and peace to the nation..What more do you want from him?...His life? You are about to have that.He is suffering today because of humanity,27 years in jail with hard labour is enough to deteriorate one's health.

Mandela dehumanised inhumanity to humanise humanity. He fought against white dominance likewise black dominance.Honour him not defame him....If only you could spend a day in Jail for a brother, you will know what sacrifice is and adore those who have been slaughtered indirectly for others to live a "meaningful life"
Don't you believe it is better to die free than to live in captivity.Don't you believe it is better to live poor than to be rich in captivity.Disagreeing with me makes me remember the Israelites who blamed God for bringing them out of captivity to suffer....
No matter how you defame my father(Nelson Mandela);you still cannot disassociate his name from FREEDOM.

A costly price he paid
A costly honour he earned.

The Triumphant Fall of the Oak

No soothsayer to predict the fall
None expected it
None prepared for it
But it was a dignified fall
And that prevented things
From falling apart.

A triumphant and glorious fall-
It really was
And at a time
I thought all the pens in the nation
Would stop writing
Alas! I was wrong
The fall of the oak
Is not for the demise
Of the shrubs

Creativity needs not to boast
I know a man
Who had abundance of it;
The truth need not to hide
I know a man
Who exposed its unclothedness.

Tell justice to mourn
There was a man
Who defended it;
If justice will not hearken
Report to humanity
To produce cover
Since it cannot deny
Not dining with the oak.

The pens would not stop writing;
The oaks would not stop growing;
The sun rises and falls
Other oaks would rise
And injustice and oppression
Would plead for mercy
At the feet of the pen
Whose edge is sharper
Than the sharpest of swords.

An oak has fallen
Not all oaks
A pen has disappeared
But more pens will appear
To give a revelation
To the genesis.

A poem written to honour the prolific writer,Chinua Achebe(The oak).

Literature / The Magical Love by larryfreedom(m): 5:57pm On Feb 14, 2013
In the darkest hours of the night
my eyes shone brighter than the stars
they lighted up the whole city
even the blind had to shield their faces
but the light still found a way through
it pierced through their rigid hearts
and replaced sorrow with happiness.

A never ending smile was visible
on my radiant face
I leapt up hastily and shouted audibly
the deaf heard me
and an end came to their deafness.

My actions were uncontrollable
and inconceivable
I was overwhelmed
by an intoxicating feeling
I was the centre of attraction
to anything living and existing.

"What could make an adult
behave like a child?"
The curious adults asked in disbelief
"what is more intoxicating than wine?"
The curious liquor sellers asked repeatedly
"what is more precious than gold?"
A curious miner asked passiontely
"what is more innocent than a baby?"
The sucklings asked themselves
in their own language

"what is more powerful than power?"
power asked powerfully
and at the same time
displaying 'her' energetic muscles
"what is more appreciated than thank you?
Mr 'thank you' asked jealously.

"LOVE," I simply answered them all
even if pierced by millions of spears
I wouldn't feel it
my heart and body were dead to pain
due to love
At that moment,I was lost
in my own world of ecstasy
thinking of how I had finally won
the heart of my adorable,
cherished and priceless jewel.

They were not satisfied
with my response
as they continued murmuring
in disbelief
but my actions which were provoked
by love:had captured them all
they were all soon found
performing my outrageous actions

"LOVE IS MAGICAL,"i said
as I in turn also watched them
in amazement and admiration.

The Unlimited Power of Love

"Love has no special cost,it only demands that
your heart be free from hatred".Mark pondered over this realistic statement, but the more he tried to exercise it,the more unrealistic it became.
His fidgeting fingers reflected his anxiety, the awful past kept intruding into the dim present. He moved towards the other part of the living room to welcome the cool air of the evening by opening the window. To his utmost amazement,he saw his mum making her way up throught the stairs;towards his door.
He heard a resounding knock on his door,he tried to turn deafen his ear through negligence, but he couldn't.He opened the door forcefully and gazed directly at his mum's face. She looked dejected and awful.
Her face sought for sympathy, empathy, love and forgiveness. She kneeled before his son and uttered the following words,"forgive me son,I have wronged you;let's bury the past"
"you leave me with no choice, bury the past!you forsook me when I needed you the most- as a child.you abandoned me and treated me like trash and you now expect me not to be rash and vengeful.Leave my house honourably,"Mark said in a gentle but serious tone. She rose up from her knees and left the house without saying a word.
Remembering the great sacrifice St.Valentine offered through love, made Mark uneasy.'Is forgiveness too expensive to be bought by love?' He thought.'does he really have the love in his heart? How can he access it?
"Open your heart to receive it,"was the answer that came forth.
He ran out of the house in search for his mum wildly, but his race was cut short,he saw a crowd gather round a body,he took a furtive glance and immediately saw the bloody body of his mum;she had been hit by a fast moving vehicle. He Kneeled beside his almost lifeless mother and held her hands dearly.
"mum,am pleading that you forgive me of not forgiving, the healing power of love has restored sanity back to me.You are a treasure to behold through love.don't die now;"Mark said while the tears flowed freely like the flowing River Nile.
"Son,the present you present to me through love has overshadowed the past full of flaws..It's great to be forgiven, greater to be cherished and greatest to be loved.Bye,son."
Life left her body before Mark could give a response.

Mark sat on the couch in his living room to mark the ten years his mother departed to the great beyond.Co-incidentally,it was a Feb. 14;valentine's day.Mark had created an imaginary presence of her mother and taken her to be his val.
"Mum, you have taught me the greatest lesson of love.Forgiveness can not be acquired by wealth, but by love. And love is what eases the heavy burden of unforgiveness. As I celebrate this day of love with you,I am remembered of how unlimited the power of love is.
He drank a toast to his mum.Two glass cups were actually present in his mind;that of love and the other contained possibilities.

Love is the key that closes the door of hatred, bitterness, cruelty, unforgiveness, castigation, resentment, slander, violence and infidelity.

writers are born with the pen inorder for them to impact their world positively. It is disheartening to realise that the pen has now become a tool for evil through castigation, slandering and false information. The pen is not evil itself since it is only a reflection of the user.

Now is the time for writers to retrace their steps inorder for them to implement the purpose for which they were created.Note:fame generated on falsehood only shows how feeble and untrue you are. To thine own self be true.Possessing a good heart makes you a good writer not potent deceit. writers are born with the pen inorder for them to impact their world positively. It is disheartening to realise that the pen has now become a tool for evil through castigation, slandering and false information. The pen is not evil itself since it is only a reflection of the user.

New is the year
New are the hopes
New are the resolutions
New are the aspirations
New is the spirit
New is the vibrancy.

Life offers newness
Newness to wear out oldness
Oldness that bores our heart
Newness that gladdens our heart
Be merry,new is the life
Life in its bright colour.

The desire for change
Is the spirit behind the joy
That marries the new year
Time to change ways
Time to change tactics
Time to change outfits;
Change within and without
Is the real newness of life.

New are the dreams
New is the courage also
But God never changes
He is ever so faithful
To allow our new changes
Result in the desired result.

Welcome to your year of unprecedented excellence

Larryfreedom.

I have written a Christmas story which you may be interested in:

Life portrays hardship and pleasure that combine to make us who we are.Hardship was what was presently present in Mike's life.He had no formal education nor a skill to make a living, but he definitely had a creator known to him as the Almighty.

Everyone believed nothing good could come out of Mike's existence. He was regarded as 'a failing failure';his parents never doubted this widely accepted opinion.

Like a sheep who had no shepherd,he wandered out of his house on a cold Tuesday morning. He realised everywhere radiated jubilation and excitement. As he continued on his journey that had no destination and purpose,he picked up cans and other things that he regarded as friends. He communed with them as if they were human but he was disappointed to find no response from them.
Suddenly,he had the scream of a man who seemed to be in trouble.Unaware to him,he was already in a bush.He walked towards the direction of the scream to quench his curiosity.
To his amazement, there was a white man who was with a camera running away from a lion.Mike roared angrily at the lion and spoke words only him and the lion could understand. The lion stopped at once and walked back timidly into the bush;it had been denied it's morning meal.

Mike helped the man get out of his panic by comforting and assuring him of his safety. The white man,who was a tourist was flabbergasted to see a man talk to animals.

Mike never considered what he had as a gift, but as a medium through which he was able to express himself to the animals who constantly kept him company whenever he was lonely or felt rejected. He knew he had offended one of his friends in order to save a fellow man he couldn't call a friend;but he had no choice.

The tourist, who was a professor of zoology at Oxford university decided to take Mike with him to the United States, sponsor his education inorder for him to be employed as an instructor
and teacher of the newly discovered animal language.

As Mike and his new friend walked back home,he heard a uniform noise from the church echoing "Merry Christmas".At that point,Mike discovered that day was the Christmas day.

'A day Jesus was born,a day his talent paid dividend,a day a no one became someone, a day the rejected became accepted and comforted.'Tears of joy and satisfaction rolled down freely from of his eyes."Christmas,a day Jesus was born to wipe away sorrowful tears in order for us to weep joyful tears,"Mike shouted this to the hearing of the white man who patted him on the back and muttered silently,"IT'S ALL OVER NOW."

THE END
I await your comments on this story.Thanks.
