TravelRe: General New Zealand Student Enquires by lastkingsman: 1:26pm On Aug 27, 2025
GraduatesGrant:
Hello everyone,

I've been receiving emails from Nairalanders regarding relocating to New Zealand via the study route.

Please note, I am not an immigration officer. Any information I provide is based on personal experience or the experiences of friends and colleagues.

If you're applying for a PhD at Auckland University of Technology (AUT), I can guide you from start to finish, including support with your visa application process. However, if you're applying to other universities, I may not be able to offer proper guidance, as AUT’s admission process differs from that of other universities in New Zealand.

Due to the numerous inquiries I've received over the past few days—which have been quite overwhelming given my schedule—I’ve decided to create a WhatsApp group strictly for those relocating to New Zealand via the study route. Please note, I do not offer advice on permanent residency or job sponsorship.

Also, I am not obligated to respond to inquiries based on your timeline, as I’m currently juggling work, study, and family commitments.

The reason for creating the WhatsApp group is that many of the questions I’ve received are similar, and I often find myself repeating the same information. The group will allow people to interact more effectively, share discoveries, and exchange experiences to support one another.

Please note: I am not asking anyone for financial favors in exchange for any information I provide. If such a request ever comes from my account, please assume it has been hacked (although realistically, my account is well secured).

I’ll be dropping the WhatsApp link soon for those interested in joining.

Nga mihi and God bless you.
Awaiting the link

This week, I’m presenting my master’s thesis and with that, I’m officially done with my degree. I’ll be graduating with distinction. But to be honest, I’m still trying to figure out what comes next.

When I first came to Chile, I never planned to stay. My intention was to use it as a stepping stone maybe apply for Canada’s Express Entry, petition for a U.S. green card, or move to Europe. But somewhere along the way, Chile surprised me and in so many ways, it shaped me.

Chile made me a man.

If someone had told me back when I was still in Nigeria, uncertain and struggling that by 2025 I’d be driving a 2025 model car, I would’ve laughed in disbelief. If someone had told me that I’d be standing on my own two feet, providing for myself, supporting my mother and sisters I would have said it was impossible.

But Chile made it possible.

I’m deeply grateful to this country. Grateful for the community I’ve found, the friends I’ve made, and the love I’ve received. My girlfriend, my circle, the people who have become like family even though I’m thousands of miles from home, I’ve never truly felt alone.

Here in my little town in Chile, I’ve met people from all over the world. People I can genuinely call friends. People who have helped shape this chapter of my life into something I will always carry with pride.

No matter where life takes me next. Chile will always be a part of me.
Big congratulations 🎉

I came across a post on Twitter that really made me pause: “Someone who was 25 in the year 2000 is turning 50 this year.”
It hit me, how fast time moves. The year 2000 doesn’t feel that far away; I still remember moments from my childhood like they were yesterday. But the truth is, time isn’t just moving. it’s flying.

It’s strange. On one hand, it feels like we have so much time ahead of us, like there’s always a “later.” But in reality, we have no time at all. Life is happening constantly, with or without us. People are getting married, starting families, switching careers, chasing dreams. The world doesn’t slow down.

Almost two years have passed since I left Nigeria. Two whole years. And yet, it feels like I just packed my bags last week. Sometimes I sit quietly and try to trace where all that time went and I can’t. It’s like life just keeps unfolding while we blink.

Time really is an illusion. And maybe the only thing that’s real is what we choose to do with the little of it we’re given .
The summary of your post and a very powerful quote.

Wow!

Wetin happen? Please, what did you see and experience? Did you spot any business opportunities? Because I am all for utilising one's abroad experience, finances and exposure to harnessing the opportunities in Nigeria. Lastly, where and where did you go to in Nigeria?
I saw hopelessness, exhaustion, poverty and hunger. Although the experience was a bit different in Major cities (affluent neighbourhoods).

I was in Lagos, PHC and Abia

As for business, you can only invest in what's in high demand (i.e. what Nigerians can't do without: food, clothing, energy, communication and so on). It's capital intensive though so if you have cash, and you are ready to be on ground to dedicate your time and energy fully to the business, you are good to go.

Human needs are insatiable.
I don't really plan to return to Nigeria. I was in that country recently and I almost cried.

I would rather learn Portuguese and relocate to Brazil or find countries like ivory coast and start life there later when I am done here

Iceland is a good choice. France is solid too. Sweden, Norway and Denmark are very good but very expensive. Czech is solid too (visa appointment is difficult to secure for this country). You could give Czech a try only if you have the proof of funds because if you are to pay bank guys for proof of funds, you might probably not get appointment date for months and you'd just be wasting money paying bank guys.

Austria is good also.
All these alternative countries people are calling sha, make anybody wey won go there learn the official language.

TravelRe: "Karōshi" Dead Men Working: The Hidden Cost Of JAPA Dreams by lastkingsman: 1:43pm On May 30, 2025
malali:
JAPA. That sweet, delicious Yoruba slang that now echoes in the minds of every restless Nigerian youth. It means “to escape”, from joblessness, from chaos, from Nigeria’s eternal loop of policy somersaults. But what happens when you escape to a country that quietly works you to death?

Welcome to the global phenomenon called Karōshi—and the shocking reality that many Nigerians are now running toward it.

What is Karōshi?

Originating in Japan, Karōshi (過労死) literally means death by overwork. Think: a 36-year-old coder who collapses at his desk after 100 hours of unpaid overtime. A nurse in Osaka who takes her own life after back-to-back 16-hour shifts. Karōshi is state-recognized in Japan, with government payouts for families of the fallen.

But what if I told you: Japan is not alone, and many of the countries Nigerians japa to are walking this same dark path?

THE DARK SIDE OF JAPA: OVERWORK CULTURE IN ‘PROMISED LANDS’

🇨🇦 Canada – The Snowy Burnout Machine
• Nigerian nurses japa here en masse.
• Many work double or triple shifts to meet family obligations in naira.
• Despite friendly smiles and maple syrup, burnout rates among healthcare workers exceed 50%.
• Suicide among immigrant frontline workers has increased by 21% post-COVID.
• And yes—you can freeze and burn out at the same time.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom – The Queue of Overworked Migrants
• NHS doctors from Nigeria often clock 60–72 hours weekly, plus on-calls.
• Sleep? Optional.
• The “clinical excellence awards” often go to those who skip lunch for years.
• Migrant nurses in care homes die of strokes in their 40s, unpublicized.
• But hey, at least you can say “innit” now, yeah?

🇺🇸 United States – The Hustler’s Paradise
• Work-life balance here is a meme.
• 40-hour week is an illusion for Black and brown immigrants.
• Gig economy + student loans = Nigerians Uber by day, hospital by night.
• 1 in 3 US physicians report symptoms of severe burnout.
• You don’t die from overwork. You die from “pre-existing conditions.”
• Capitalism is the only god, and rest is sin.

🇩🇪 Germany – Efficient Until You Break
• Structured yes, but migrant healthcare workers face silent exploitation.
• Many Nigerian workers in elder care, logistics, and engineering find themselves in high-stress roles with zero mental health resources.
• Oh, and your German boss doesn’t do “empathy.”

🇯🇵 Japan – The Original Karōshi King
• Glamorous in brochures, toxic in reality.
• If you’re not ready to become a zombie in a suit, don’t japa here.
• Nigerian immigrants often end up in factory or delivery jobs, working 13+ hour shifts, sometimes 7 days a week.
• Suicide is often framed as “failure,” not fatigue.
• And society? Cold as a misfired sake.

The Problem Isn’t Work — It’s Invisibility

The global capitalist machine doesn’t just overwork people. It hides the deaths.
• Cause of death: “Cardiac arrest”
• Real cause: 100 hours of sleepless exhaustion
• Stigma: “He couldn’t cope”
• Reality: “He wasn’t meant to.”

WHY THIS MATTERS TO NIGERIANS

The JAPA dream is powerful, but if your new country treats labor like coal in a furnace, you’ve swapped dysfunction for slow-motion death.

You’re not escaping Nigeria. You’re escaping to another kind of cage.

Many high-IQ Nigerian migrants are masking ADHD, ASD, or anxiety under the radar, and working in systems that punish emotional honesty.
• No accommodations.
• No breaks.
• No humanity.
These are karōshi factories, masquerading as developed countries.

Japa wisely. Research ruthlessly. Don’t swap a broken Nigeria for a beautiful prison with perfect roads.

Success is not about crossing borders.
It’s about not dying with your dream unpaid for.
Na wa oh grin

Most of the work visa are scam.. 99% of work visa they ask u to pay for. Go to Tiktok u hear Luxembourg work visa... All this are scam 99.9%

No genuine company will ask u to pay... Just go their skill visa occupation page then apply if u meet requirements.

The next option is through school.

Was speaking with a lady who said they are waiting for work visa from two countries. The agent assured them. Getting to two years now.... The truth of the matter is that 99.9% are scam.

Two of my colleagues who are in uk where scam earlier this year. One was 12k pounds, the other was part payment 5k pounds. They are seeking to extend visa as they are done with school.
80 to 90% of care home visa people pay 20k pounds from Nigeria are pending revocation.. They land work for one month home office has revoked their license.

There is a guy called okwulora on Facebook... Through his page a woman called madam flow scam people of over 350k pounds if not more for COS . This are Nigerians both in uk and ib Nigeria.. I think verydarkman covered the story. in Scotland same thing happened earlier 2023 where they scam students who are just graduating of over 200k pounds

I know someone who sold 2 storey duplex in owerri to fund this all end up in revocation of licence of the sponsor given two months to leave the UK last year.
Although now the government are now trying to create a way to help those who lost their sponsor to get new sponsor now while blocking care homes from bringing in people

Over 9k Nigerian men applied to take their wife to Uk last month.

9 thousand foolish men grin grin

In this life no matter tha age you will always come across these 2 ppl.
1. The foolish man
2. The Player

Women marry fools and settle down with nice guys they can control
A woman want someone they can control. Thats why woman can't marry a player. She go knack the player scatter but wont marry him.

Because a player know all her tricks and he make sure she never wins.
A player will never take his wife to a feminist nation like Uk. Never!!! grin

But a fool will say "yes honey" and take his wife to Uk. Then she divorce you chase you out of your house then invite one playa to come keep the bed warm during winter grin grin

i fully support women chasing men from their homes in Uk.
That is the only way a foolish man can learn. Experience grin
I derive joy seeing men punished for their stupidity.

I call it natural selection
And the women are doing nature a favour of seperating the foolish men and keeping the players

Okay when you are not a student you pay council tax.

I stay in a two bedroom flats not a room.

Note here in Manchester a two bedroom flat unfurnished goes for 1200. I was lucky to get this

You can check prices here

https://www.zoopla.co.uk/to-rent/flats/2-bedrooms/manchester/

Now imagine if am paying 1200 for house rent alone then earning 1800 pounds after tax. How much will remain. That's 600 now remove council tax, water, transport, food, etx. All am saying is that its better n more preferable for coupled without kids who combine income as they share bill together but once u have kids then one stays n watch the kids or work psrt time. This is the reasons their government support mothers with funds for their children upkeep but unfortunately we are migrant n can't access this .

If one can’t make it in the uk they won’t make it in the USA. The USA is way more competitive and way more harder than the uk. I knew a girl like that she was living in Poland and blamed not getting a job on racism , she went to the USA and has been there for like 3 years and can’t find a job.
Tech jobs?

Another challenge people don't talk about is full right to work.

In UK, companies are boldly stating on job adverts that they don't sponsor. In fact, that's the first interview question right now: "Do you need Sponsorship now or in the future"? Once you answer yes, forget the interview/job. If you lie, they will still find out through your share code.

International students/foreigners need sponsorship now or in the future unless they are on global talent visa which is not easy to get or on a dependent visa for 5 years with partner as main applicant.

One lady talked about this visa issue on twitter.
