Your BSc, PGDE and over 13 years of senior secondary school teaching experience give you a basis for assessing your options, but eligibility and the likelihood of receiving an invitation must be evaluated separately.

Two pathways to investigate:

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

You generally need at least one continuous year of paid, qualifying skilled work experience within the past 10 years, equivalent to at least 1,560 hours; English proficiency of at least CLB 7 in all four abilities; and an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for your foreign education. You must also score at least 67/100 on the FSW selection grid and meet the other requirements.

Important: The 67-point threshold determines eligibility under the FSW selection grid. It is different from your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which determines your ranking in the Express Entry pool. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee an invitation.


2. Education occupations category

Secondary school teachers (NOC 41220, TEER 1) are included in IRCC's education occupations category. Candidates generally need at least 12 months of qualifying experience in the occupation within the past three years. You must also qualify for an Express Entry program. Inclusion in the category does not guarantee an invitation.


Your DIY action plan:

1. IELTS: Book IELTS General Training, not Academic. Aim for CLB 9 or higher across all four skills if possible.


2. ECA: Have your BSc assessed by an IRCC-designated organisation. Ask whether assessing your PGDE separately could improve your recognised educational credentials.


3. Calculate your scores: Use the official and separately assess your FSW selection-grid points.

4. Explore provincial pathways: Research provincial nominee programs alongside Express Entry rather than relying exclusively on education category draws.


5. Check settlement funds: FSW applicants generally need to demonstrate sufficient settlement funds unless an applicable exemption applies. Check the current amount for your family size.


6. Investigate teacher certification: Canadian teacher licensing is regulated provincially. Immigration eligibility and permission to teach are separate processes.



Your actual prospects will depend on your recognised qualifications, language results, CRS score and the immigration pathways available when you apply.

Start with the official requirements and assess your profile before spending money on applications.
