Sports / What Lampard Said About Nigerian Defender After Chelsea 2-2 Draw With Sheffield by LazyGold(m): 2:12pm On Sep 02, 2019
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has said that Nigerian-born defender, Fikayo Tomori was deserving of his first start for the club.

The 21-year-old was named in Chelsea’s team for the 2-2 draw against Sheffield United on Saturday.

Lampard is a huge admirer of the England Under-21 international, having had him on loan at Derby last season

“I think Tomori played very well for me last year and is training at a very high level, Lampard told reporters after the game.

“There is competition at centre-back, he deserved to play and I thought he played well. It was just a choice.”

Chelsea have conceded nine goals in their opening four games, including four to teams promoted from the Championship, which leaves Lampard looking for defensive solutions.

“No, I wouldn’t say I was worried about it,” he added.

“I am trying to work all over the team to get the right combinations.

“Rudiger is fit after the international break which gives me another choice.

“We can isolate goals and talk about centre-backs or whatever – it’s not (just down to them), it’s the team.

“When we score goals, sometimes it’s because of the centre-back playing the ball quickly

“I am not relating to the centre-back issue. I trust the four centre-backs I have completely, we are just in a moment where obviously we need to stop conceding goals.”

Nairaland / General / CAN President, Adeboye, Others Ask Buhari To Completely Scrap RUGA by LazyGold(m): 10:58am On Sep 01, 2019
CAN President says the association has come up with recommendations on RUGA program for herdsmen.

The President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr Supo Ayokunle, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to completely scrap the suspended RUGA scheme for herdsmen, Punch reports.

The Christian bodies disclosed this on Saturday, August 31, 2019, at the Church leaders stakeholders’ summit, themed, ‘RUGA: The church’s response in the 21st century.’

While speaking at the summit, which held at the ShepherdHill Baptist Church, in Lagos, CAN President, Ayokunle said CAN’s involvement in the RUGA debate was needed, saying the association could not fold its arms when the church was “hurting very badly at the hands of Fulani herdsmen.”

According to Punch, Ayokunle said the association took painstaking approach to set up a committee to dig deep into the issue of Ruga before coming up with recommendations.

He said, “Anything that smacks of mutual suspicion should be avoided in the interest of national unity. The Federal Government should immediately disarm and prosecute the Fulani herdsmen terrorists that have been recorded as one of the deadliest terrorists groups in the world.

“The group of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association which openly supported the activities of the murderous Fulani herdsmen be identified and banned immediately.

“President Buhari should suspend his membership and patronage of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association until he leaves office to reduce tension.”

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Ayokunle said insecurity in Nigeria has become an embarrassment.

“Enough is enough about insecurity in the country. It is totally embarrassing and people are having sleepless nights over it. There is no free movement anymore. Even military officers can no longer travel without heavy military escort; it is as bad as that. It is happening on a daily basis, it is no longer propaganda, neither is it political opposition talks.

“Our relatives are constantly being kidnapped and we are being compelled to look for money to pay ransoms. There are no other persons we can call upon than the government because that is why they are there. They should be able to mop up the guns which these criminals are using to threaten others and also arrest them, ” he said.

Ayokunle also said RUGA is bound to become a landmine for future crisis that will be to the advantage of the settlers, adding that the scheme is a contradiction to the modern-day livestock production system.

He said, “Large expanse of land will be delineated and taken from indigenous people in all the 774 local government areas for use by Fulani herdsmen. The Federal Government will deep its hand into the commonwealth of the nation to develop this programme for the interest of just one out of the 250 ethnic nationalities in Nigeria contrary to the provisions of the constitution.

“As perceived, these settlements will over time metamorphose into politico-religious entities within host communities, thereby reconfiguring the political, religious and cultural status of the environment. This is capable of becoming a landmine for future crisis that will be to the advantage of the settlers. The situations in Plateau and Southern Kaduna are very instructive.

“The Ruga programme is a contradiction to the modern-day livestock production system that centres on ranching and feedlots.”

On his part, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Church of God, Enoch Adeboye urged the stakeholders to stop eating cows, saying “if we stop eating cow meat for a while, the man who sells it will come and renegotiate the terms.”

Pastor E.A. Adeboye says when people stop eating cows, herdsmen would renegotiate the terms.

He said, “Someone cannot be killing your brother and you are eating his cow meat. My friend said if you begin to allow them to rear cow at your backyard, very soon, they will send you out of your house. My friend also said that even the scientists have said that red meat is not good for our health and we are buying cow meat, why can’t we eat fish which has been confirmed to be the best for us”.

However, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, when contacted for comment on the call for the scrapping of RUGA by CAN, Garba said the question should be directed to the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

Agriculture / 200 Graduates Get N74m, Free Land In Ogun by LazyGold(m): 9:09pm On Aug 31, 2019
To curb unemployment and boost food production in Ogun State, 200 unemployed graduates have been offered loans totalling N74.4m under the Fadama III agricultural programme of the Federal Government.

According to a statement, the youths were presented with the cheques on Thursday by the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, after their training.

The governor said the beneficiaries would be incorporated into the Anchor Borrowers’ Scheme, whereby they would be given free land with certificates of occupancy issued in their names.

Abiodun said the beneficiaries’ land would not only be cleared free, they would also be given seedlings and fertiliser, as well as extension service.

“Already, we have secured people who would buy the farm produce and it is a win-win situation as the loans on offer carry single-digit interest,” he said.

The governor implored the beneficiaries – selected from the state’s 20 local government areas – to utilise the funds effectively in order to achieve the programme’s objectives.

According to the statement, the beneficiaries were trained in rice processing, poultry, fishery, among others.

He also said his administration would enrol 40,000 youths in the Anchor Borrowers’ Scheme with support from the World Bank and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

In his remarks, the consultant to the state governor on agriculture, Dr Adetunji Oredipe, said the Fadama project had provided an opportunity to strengthen the drive for economic diversification.

The National Project Coordinator, Fadama Guys, Mr Balarabe Abdulrahman, represented by Mr Adeleke Adeyemi, commended the Ogun State government for its support and keen interest in the Fadama III project.

Politics / Aregbesola Directs NIS To Issue Passport Within 48 Hours by LazyGold(m): 7:08pm On Aug 30, 2019
Minister of Interior Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has directed officials of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS ) to exploit every capacity within the service to ensure issuance of international passports to genuine and qualified applicants within 48 hours.

The Minister said with deployment of state- of- the- art technology, the 48 hours timeline for acquiring an international passport was achievable if officials of the NIS eliminates human contacts and deal with racketeering, which has built an “unusual economy “, around the passport issuance process.

He said the directive has become imperative because of the pains and agonizing experience many Nigerians are subjected to in their bid to procure the important travel document.

The Minister also directed the NIS to be on top of its game by putting in place a strict implementation process of the Border Management Strategy in order to ensure border safety and security.

The Minister disclosed this on Friday in Lagos while flagging off the NIS Management retreat.

Aregbesola urged the NIS to eliminate bottlenecks associated with procurement of international passport by adopting cutting edge technology that will reduce human interface.

He said NIS as the face of the nation at border entry and exit points must train its personnel on how to treat Nigerians and others with dignity.

Aregbesola said the service must place high premium on the provision of infrastructure and human capacity as motivation for efficient services.
Aregbesola said huge infrastructure is useless without the human elements, urging the NIS to invest more in the training of its personnel by scaling up infrastructure of the mind to achieve efficiency in service delivery.

He challenged the NIS to scale up its facilitation at the airport to reduce long queues for arriving passengers.

The Minister said Nigerians deserve a better deal NIS urging its management to think out of the box on how to implement the three point agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari bordering on security , economy and transparency.

He enjoined the NIS to play a leading role in ensuring that the borders of Nigeria are safe and secured to guarantee buoyant economy and a transparent service delivery.

Doing such, he said will make Nigeria preferred destination for investors and visitors without comprising national security.
Aregbesola said: “From information available to me, it is possible with the right technology in place for Nigeria Immigration Service to issue international passports to applicants who have paid the official fees after forty eight hours. If there is any delay, the officials should communicate to the affected applicants .

“One of the ways to achieve this is to deploy the right technology and eliminate human contact in the passport issuance process. This way, we eliminate sharp practices and racketerring built around the process. This is the way to go and all officials should shun all forms of corruption in the discharge of their duties.

“The primary role of the Immigration Service is the Security of the border and migration management. No unwanted , suspicious and criminal person must be allowed entry into our nation just as we are to prevent the exit from Nigeria of all known domestic real felons and or domestic potential felons from leaving Nigeria to tarnish our image abroad .

“All officers of the Service must as a matter of urgency, embrace the digital tradition and be technology/computer compliant, particularly at the senior and management level. Our officers must shun all forms of corruption through openness and transparency in the discharge of their duties.

“Should there be justifiable delay in delivering on this commitment, there must be a mechanism to communicate, such reasons (s) within a period as agreed in the retreat to such applicant for the passport which must not be later than 72 hours, after discovering such reason.”

The Minister emphasised that with technology, Nigeria Immigration Service must eliminate the tradition of endless wait for obtaining the Nigerian Passport by Nigerians desirous of having one.

“With technology, it is possible to process and obtain the passport within 48 hours, if the application does not have any issues. Nigerian passport should be available within 48 hours maximum after application and at the official fee, the same goes for entry visa, resident permit, seamen license, as well as application and processing of other services.”

Comptroller General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede said the three day retreat was put together to serve as a platform for drawing strategic road map 2019 -2023 to drive the NIS in achieving set goals.

The retreat he said will also provide a platform to review the process and documentation at its various service windows.

Babandede while condemning sharp practices associated with the process of acquiring international passport urged the minister to assist the service in tackling the problem of booklet scarcity.

He said : “I must admit to the Minister that many eligible Passport applicants are currently not having any appreciable satisfaction in interfacing with our Passport window while applying. The process of acquiring our Passports still remains not only very confusing and frustrating but also very fraudulent.

“Many of our Personnel have continued to institutionalize sharp practices on our Passport processing window as many applicants now procure the document on the basis of how much they can afford to pay as bribes and not how much diligence they observe in following up the Passport procedures we have stated on our website. I believe strongly that whatever we do here nothing much will change except the Minister of Interior assist the Service in tackling the problem of booklet scarcity.

“We must continue to evaluate our operational and personal conducts in line with government’s set agenda of improving security, economic development and transparency.

“Whether we are working in the Passport offices, Control Posts and/or any Unit for that matter, if our conducts and actions do not promote national security, economic development and transparency in government affairs, we have not only missed the point but also diminished our relevance in the national development efforts.”

Politics / Warri Port Reaping From Executive Order — NPA by LazyGold(m): 6:23pm On Aug 30, 2019
There is a tremendous improvement as regards ship handling operations and an increase in ship traffic and revenue, such that over 200 vessels now berth in Delta Ports, Warri.

The development, brought about by a synergy among management of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), security agencies and other critical stakeholders, has brought back increased economic activities in the oil-rich city.

Chairman of NPA Board of Directors, Mr Emmnauel Olajide Adesoye, who chaired a stakeholders’ forum after his second on-the-spot assessment tour of the facility during the week in Warri, commended the improvement he had seen after his last visit in November 2016.

“The purpose is to have an on-the-spot assessment of the progress we’ve made by this port since our last meeting in November 2016.

“The current challenge is about the issue of dredging the channels in the port, particularly the terminals.

“We’re already taking action concerning it. So, there’s no problem. No time frame, but we are on it,” the chairman noted.

He expressed satisfaction at the improved security situation in the waterways which, he enthused, has brought about more vessels berthing at the port.

“I’m impressed with the security situation in the port. No security and safety issue. No vandalism. This was not so the last time we came.

“The management has lived true to its word and you can see the degree of improvement that has happened here.

“The number of ships has increased significantly and revenue has gone up.

“That’s what happens when there’s unity among stakeholders, management and the communities,” he stated, why responding to security issues raised by shipping agents.

Port Manager, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Delta Ports, Warri, Mr S. O. Okeke, at the forum, affirmed that the progress made in the last two years stemmed from the Executive Order of May 18, 2017, issued by then acting President Yemi Osinbajo in respect of ease of doing business in seaports.

Okeke said Warri Port was experiencing enhanced environment for business to thrive after keying into the policy, adding that it has transformed Warri Port into a business hub, especially after the remedial dredging of the Escravos Channels.

He noted that other achievements on record due to the order included the replacement of the critical buoys, repossession of trailer park, leasing of the trailer park which is now a Load Bay for trucks, illumination of the entire port and the upcoming towage services.

According to him, documentation and payment processes have witnessed improvement through e-payment, and e-SEN and revenue invoicing management systems (RIMS), among others.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman, Rufai Mohammed, stated that in recent times, only the regime of President Muhammadu Buhari has embarked on the dredging of the Warri terminals.

He said since the Federal Government was committed to improving the economic activities in the ports, more dredging is being carried out to encourage bigger vessels to berth in Warri Ports.

He, therefore, called on all stakeholders, especially host communities, to continue to maintain the peace for smooth operations in order to shore up economic activities.

Meanwhile, stakeholders from shipping firms such as Mr Sunny Iwuji and Akinwumi Akinyemi, called for more security to enable them to meet the global practice of 24 hours shipping activities as against the current 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. regime.

Stakeholders at the well-attended forum included Custom Area Controller (Edo/Delta), represented by Deputy Controller, Nnamdi Ebeatu, representatives of other security agencies, union leaders, management and staff of Delta Ports and captains of industries, among others.

Politics / Osun Govt. Commences Vocational Training For 100 Vulnerable Persons by LazyGold(m): 11:24am On Aug 30, 2019
The Osun Government on Wednesday commenced the training of 100 vulnerable persons and people living with disabilities in the state.

Oyetola Mrs Taiwo Oladunjoye, the Director of Special Needs, Ministry of Social Protection, Sports and Special Needs, who declared the training programme open in Ilobu, said the initiative was aimed at ensuring the inclusion of people with disabilities in all social and economic activities in the state.

Oladunjoye said the programme would help to expose the trainees to marketable skills that could lift them from their present socio-economic status to desired positions in life.

Describing the initiative as noble, she said it would also help to create a sense of belonging for vulnerable persons and those living with disabilities in the state.

“We are doing this to give the vulnerable a sense of belonging in government in line with the Gov. (Gboyega) Oyetola’s commitment to ensure equitable distribution of resources to all and sundry, regardless of socio-political and economic background.

“This is a life-supportive programme designed to banish hunger, banish poverty, banish unemployment and ameliorate sufferings among the vulnerable citizens and persons with disabilities.

“It is our belief that this programme will help to prevent our vulnerable citizens and persons with disabilities from begging or looking for white-collar jobs,” Oladunjoye said.

She said the trainees would be exposed to production of liquid and solid soaps, toilet cleaner, cosmetics, popcorn and tie and dye among others. Oladunjoye, who noted that the training would run for a week, said it would also be residential with three meals provided daily for the trainees. She added that on completion of the programme, the trainees would be given capital to start their businesses.
