FACT CHECK: 2024 CAF Awards: Here Is The Full List Of Nominees


The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has published the list of nominees for the 2024 awards.

The event will be held December 16, 2024, in Marrakech, Morocco.

In a statement from CAF, the period under review is January 2024 and October 2024.

There are 10 players nominated in each category.

South Africa goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams is nominated in all three categories: Player of the Year, CAF Goalkeeper of the Year and CAF Interclub Player of the Year.

The winners will be determined through votes from a diverse panel, which includes the CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, and the Head Coaches and Captains of Member Associations, as well as clubs participating in the group stages of interclub competitions.

The list of nominees for the women’s categories will be announced shortly.

Tinubu Is Showing Southeast ‘Renewed Shege’ – Abaribe

Abia South Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has accused President Bola Tinubu of showing the Southeast “renewed shege.”

Abaribe faulted the cabinet reshuffling, which saw the appointment of Bianca Ojukwu as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Tinubu had removed five ministers while appointing seven and reassigning 10 to new portfolios.

The president relieved Uju-Ken Ohanenye, the Minister of Women Affairs, from her duties.

Reacting, Abaribe said relieving a Southeast Minister and replacing with another “doesn’t feel like progress.”

Speaking with Arise TV, Abaribe said, “For my constituents, nothing has changed. They don’t refer to it as ‘Renewed Hope’ but rather as ‘Renewed Shege (Suffering).’

“The South East, in particular, is questioning the supposed changes. Removing one South East minister only to replace them doesn’t feel like progress.”

The lawmaker accused Tinubu of breaching the constitution, stressing that the reshuffled cabinet did not reflect Federal character.

BREAKING NEWs: Nigeria Government Drops All Charges Against Binance Executive Gambaryan After Many Trial

The federal government has dropped all charges against Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance Holdings executive who has been detained since April and facing trial for money laundering.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced the withdrawal of charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday morning.

It should be recalled that the judge, Emeka Nwite, had previously denied Gambaryan bail twice, citing flight risk concerns.

Gambaryan’s health had reportedly deteriorated during detention, with prison officials describing him as “very sick”.

Gambaryan, a United States citizen and former IRS agent, was arrested in February while visiting Nigeria to address regulatory concerns about Binance. He was accused of money laundering and operating an unlicensed financial institution.

The prosecution’s lawyer stated that Gambaryan was merely an employee of Binance, not involved in the company’s broader financial decisions.

Mark Mordi, Gambaryan’s defence lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria agreed with the prosecution’s assessment.

28-year-old Nigerian Arrested In India For Overstay

Indian police arrested a 28-year-old Nigerian national on Sunday for illegally staying in the country for more than six years.

Authorities revealed that the suspect had fraudulently obtained key identity documents, including an ID card and a voter’s card.

Senior Inspector Mahesh Bansode, speaking to The Times of India, explained that the suspect initially entered India on a student visa, which expired in 2017.

Tension In Anambra Community As Gunmen Kill 10 During Traditional Festival (PHOTO)


A peaceful celebration turned into a bloodbath on Sunday when gunmen attacked Nibo, a community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, during the Onwa Asaa Festival, a traditional event.

The attackers, reportedly arriving in a Lexus SUV, opened fire on festival-goers at a restaurant in Oye Nwochichi Market, killing at least 10 people.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but locals believe cultists were involved in what is being described as a “cult-related clash.”

Emeka Ofomata, an eyewitness, described the harrowing incident to Premium Times:

“They drove in aggressively and started shooting everyone around, both inside and outside the restaurant. We haven’t counted the dead bodies, but they are more than 10.”

Residents also reported that after the initial assault, the gunmen drove to the nearby Eke Nibo Market, where they continued their rampage, shooting more victims. The exact number of casualties at this second location is still unconfirmed.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stated that Nigerians will continue to experience national grid collapses due to the deplorable state of the country’s power infrastructure.

He said the national grid collapses are almost inevitable, stressing that having multiple power grids in each region and state would ensure stability.

On the Electricity Act signed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, the Minister noted that the decentralisation of the power sector would help the plan to build grids in each region.

Adelabu said: “This Electricity Act has decentralised power. It has enabled all the subnational governments, the state government and the local government, to be able to participate in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.

We all rely on a single national grid today; if there is a disturbance of the national grid, it affects all 36 states. It shouldn’t be like that. This will enable us to start moving gradually towards having regional groups and possibly having state grids.

“And each of these grids will be removed and shielded from each other. So, if there’s a problem with a particular grid, only the state where it belongs will be affected, not the entire nation. So, this is one of the impacts this Electricity Act will have.”

Speaking further, the Minister said grid collapse would be inevitable without sufficient investment in the power sector.

He pointed out that there was no grid collapse in the last four months until it happened again on Monday.

Adelabu said: “We keep talking about grid collapse. Grid collapse, grid collapse, whether it’s a total collapse, partial collapse, or slight trip-off. This is almost inevitable as it is today, given the state of our power infrastructure, the infrastructure is in deplorable conditions, so why won’t you have trip-offs? Why won’t you have collapses, either total or partial? It will continue to remain like this until we can overhaul the entire infrastructure. What we do now is to make sure that we manage it.

Gunmen Attack Police, Killed DPO, Others In Ambush During Kidnap Rescue Operation, Delta (PHOTOS)


A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and several others lost their lives in an early morning ambush during a rescue mission in Delta State.

The incident was reported by Delta Human Rights Activist, Comrade Israel Joe, via a Facebook post, detailing the harrowing events that unfolded during the operation.

He wrote, “A devastating blow to the Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The new DPO of Agbarho, who resumed just two days ago, along with the DPO of Orerokpe, CSP Paul, and their team, were ambushed at about 1:00 am while on a kidnap rescue operation near Agbarho Rail Station.

“There was an exchange of gunfire, resulting in the deaths of the new DPO and several officers. The Orerokpe DPO was rushed to a hospital, where he is currently fighting for his life.

“I am deeply pained by this news. Just yesterday, I had a conversation with the DPO about the conduct of his officers, and he swiftly addressed the issue, cautioning his men against any misconduct under his watch.

During its initial reading this week, a bill titled “An Act to establish the legal framework for a free internet access program in designated public areas across Nigeria and for other related purposes” was introduced. This legislation is sponsored by Mr. Abubakar Kusada, the representative for the Kankia/Ingawa/Kusada Federal Constituency in Katsina State.

Train Crushes 50-year-old Man To Death In Lagos (PHOTOS)

Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that a 50-year-old man, identified as Emmanuel, was crushed to death by a moving train.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

Hundeyin said that the incident happened on Tuesday at about 9:00 am at the ARENA Shopping Complex area, in Oshodi.

According to him, a woman, who claimed to be the younger sister of the deceased, reported the case to the Mosafejo Police Division.

The PPRO added that the woman reported that she got a phone call that her elder brother was allegedly crushed by a moving train while walking along the track.

Rivers Conflict: We Won’t Engage In Media Tussle With Fubara - NPF

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) says it is not ready to engage in a media tussle with Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers, over the political crisis in the state.

On Friday, police operatives barricaded the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) in Port Harcourt, the state capital, ahead of the conduct of the LGA polls on October 5.

The NPF also said its officers would not provide security for the polls.

Fubara, who had stormed the facility, said the presence of police officers at the RISEC premises was unnecessary.

The governor accused Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), of taking orders from Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), to truncate the LGA elections in the state.

Fubara said the RSIEC facility was his property while daring the IGP to shoot him.

Reacting, the police faulted the allegations by the governor and said they were only conforming with a court order barring the force from participating in the LGA elections.

In a statement on Monday, Muyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, debunked the “prevailing falsehood of partisanship circulating in the media”.

Adejobi also reaffirmed the police’s “neutrality and non-interference in political affairs” within the state and the country.

He noted that the “misinformation triggered by the unwarranted outburst of Fubara was totally uncalled for and unfair to the law enforcement institutions in Nigeria”.

“For the avoidance of doubts, the general public is free to profile the career journey of the Inspector-General of Police and his track record in every place he has served, which undoubtedly show him as a man of honor, integrity, and focus before and after his assumption of office as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector General of Police of Nigeria,” the statement reads.

“The IGP is very well respected in the Association of Chiefs of Police Worldwide, particularly in Africa, where he’s currently serving as the Chairman of the West African Police Chiefs Committee (WAPCCO) and providing meritorious leadership within the West African Chiefs of Police.

“We have seen Chiefs of Police from across the world coming to attend his events in Nigeria and extending several invitations to him. For the first time, the president of Interpol was at the opening ceremony of the Nigeria Police conference and retreat in Owerri last year under this IGP. Let us please observe some decorum in our politics in Nigeria.

Bode George Tells Wike: Allow Fubara To Work

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has asked Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to allow Governor Simi Fubara of River State to work.

Wike, the immediate past governor of the oil rich River state, has been locked in a battle with his successor over control of the state.

Governor Fubara’s administration had conducted local government election on Saturday under the Action People’s Party (APP) following the handover of the PDP structure to Wike who is also reportedly controlling the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in the state.

The tension in Rivers increased after the Saturday’s LG election where APP swept the polls in the 22 of the 23 local governments.

Adding his voice to the issue on Monday, Chief Bode George asked President Tinubu to call his Minister to order and prevail on him to allow Governor Fubara to work.

In a statement, he said, “Now that people of Rivers State have boldly asserted their civic and constitutional rights by coming out to vote in the Local Government election on Saturday, this is the time for former governor of the state and now FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to allow Governor Siminalayi Fubara work and deliver dividend of democracy to the people.

“This is also the time for President Bola Tinubu to advise Wike, who is one of his ministers, to allow the governor to work.

“I say this with all sense of responsibility because if this democracy is truncated, God forbid, Tinubu, as the Commander-in-Chief, will be the biggest loser.

“All lovers of democracy will agree with me that political happenings in this oil-bearing state in the last few months, if allowed to continue, can lead to a re-enactment of the crisis in the defunct Western Region between 1962 and 1966 which eventually led to the first military coup of January 15, 1966. Many of our national figures were killed and events of that day led to a second coup on July 29, 1966 when scores of military officers were killed.

“Since history is no longer taught in our schools, I want to remind the gladiators in this Rivers crisis that the January and July 1966 killings eventually led to the civil war between July 6, 1967 and January 15, 1970. Close to two million Nigerians died in the war.”

George stated that happenings in River State call for concern.

“I am raising this alarm because what is happening in Rivers now is a cause for serious concern for everyone.

“My understanding of this man-made crisis is that there is a despotic, divisive, wicked and anti-people design to create a conflagration which may eventually consume our country.

“We all know the economic importance of Rivers to the survival of this nation. It is the gateway to the Niger Delta.

“Any threat to peace in this state will eventually lead to huge security implications, not only for Nigeria but West Africa and Africa. It is good to have political ambition, to be the alpha and omega in a partisan setting but this ambition must not be at variance with the expectations of the people.

“Some have said what is happening can be traced to 2027 elections’ calculations. I believe it is too early to start strategising for a partisan event which is still close to 28 months away.

“One thing is clear: Nyesom Wike was governor of the state for eight years. He left the Government House in May last year and today, he is the FCT Minister. Sir Peter Odili and Rotimi Amaechi were governors before him. Now that Governor Fubara is the Chief Executive of the state, he should be allowed to work. Nobody stays in office forever.

The police command in Lagos state says it has detained a hookup lady, otherwise known as commercial s#x worker, Joy Kelvin, for allegedly stabbing a client, simply identified as Okafor, 48, to death.

“A complainant reported that he got a call from one of his friends that Okafor was stabbed in his house by one Joy Kelvin, a prostitute he brought to his house overnight.

“He stated further that the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Marina where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty,” he said.

The image maker said that the police stormed the scene and arrested the suspect.

Nigerian Man Stabs Newlywed Wife To Death, Sets House On Fire In Lagos


One Motunrayo Olaniyi has allegedly stabbed his newlywed wife, Olajumoke, to death after a heated argument at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, October 4, 2024, after the couple had an altercation.

This is according to Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.

He stated that the suspect also inflicted wounds on himself after committing the act.

However, a team of police personnel who arrived at the scene were said to have extinguished the fire and later discovered Olajumoke’s lifeless body with wounds to the abdomen.

“A distress call was received on October 4 at Ikorodu Division that a newly wedded couple, one Motunrayo Olaniyi, aged 30, and his wife Olajumoke, aged 25 years, allegedly engaged in a domestic scuffle in their room at Amazing Grace Estate, Elepe, Ikorodu.

Renowned Nigerian singer and presenter, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has called out the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, following his recent apology on tithing.

Naija News reports that Pastor Adeboye’s name has been trending on social media after the revered clergyman tendered a public apology over his sermon of many years ago, in which he declared that people who do not pay tithe would not make it to heave.

Pastor Adeboye tendered this apology during his church’s Internation Youth Convention (IYC) at the Redemption City of God, Mowe, Ogun State.

“I’m apologizing for saying,’If you don’t pay tithe, you won’t make it to heaven.’ I’m sorry, that’s wrong, and it’s not in the Bible. What the Bible says is, ‘Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God,” Adeboye had said.

The apology has elicited mixed reactions on and off social media.

Reacting, in a post via his social media account, Charly Boy said Adeboye’s apology does not mean anything until he returns the tithes he collected from his congregation.
