Atiku Urges National Assembly To Consider A Six-year Presidential Term.(See Full Proposal)

Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President, has written to the National Assembly. He is advocating for a constitutional amendment to establish a six-year single-term limit for both the President and state governors.

In a memorandum addressed to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, Atiku suggested the implementation of a rotational presidency between the Northern and Southern regions

Atiku called on the National Assembly to revise Section 135(2) to state: “amend Section 135(2) to read: ‘Subject to the provisions of subsection (1), the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of six years.”

Furthermore, he suggested replacing the term “substitution of an aspirant” in Section 285(14)(a) with “a voter.”

The former Vice President proposed that the minimum educational requirement for candidates seeking election should be the Ordinary National Diploma, rather than the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination. He suggested amending Section 65(2)(a) to state: “He has been educated up to at least Ordinary National Diploma in any recognised academic institution.”

Additionally, he suggested adding a clause to Section 65(2)(a)(i) that would state: “Evidence of certificates of all educational qualifications of a candidate shall be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission or an affidavit by the candidate in the event of loss of his/her educational certificates, qualifications obtained, and dates, stating the schools attended.”

Kaduna: We Pay N4.7 Billion Every Month To Settle Inherited Dept – Governor Uba Sani Lament

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has revealed that N4.7 billion is being subtracted from the state government’s federal allocation each month to pay off the debts he inherited.

In his statement “In Kaduna, we are paying N4.7 billion in debt every month; go and check and see our allocation. You will agree with me that we started paying this debt in June 2023.

Currently, what we are receiving is about N8 billion, while we should be receiving around N12 billion compared to what other states are getting within Northern Nigeria.

“We are trying our best to manage what we have. Yes, I agree with you that governance is about reducing costs. Since I became governor, I have maintained that we have not purchased a single vehicle for anyone—whether myself, the Deputy Governor, or my commissioners.

We have also reduced the performance bonuses and salaries of our commissioners and the Deputy Governor.

Today, I am only receiving half of my salary because we have to make sacrifices, considering the challenges we face.

“People may ask about our IGR (Internally Generated Revenue). Our IGR account is with Zenith Bank; you can check it. Every month, Zenith Bank deducts about N800 million at source because I inherited that debt.”

CORRUPTION: Let Former Presidents, Governors And Others Come Forward To Prove Their Integrity Like El Rufai- Asabor

In the Holy Scriptures, Samuel, the revered prophet and leader, stood before the people of Israel and issued a bold challenge. He invited them to bring forth any evidence of his wrongdoing. “Here I am,” he said. “Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed?” (1 Samuel 12:3). It was an extraordinary act of courage and integrity, a leader holding himself accountable to the very people he led, daring them to find fault in his governance. Unsurprisingly, the people responded: “You have not defrauded or oppressed us.”

Fast forward to contemporary Nigeria, a country with a rich history of leadership, but one also plagued by the recurring issue of corruption. Nasir El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, recently made a similar declaration to Samuel’s. He proclaimed to Nigerians that throughout his tenure as governor, he had never stolen public funds. El-Rufai, in the same spirit of boldness, invited scrutiny, challenging anyone with evidence to come forward. It was a rare but commendable act in Nigerian politics, a leader opening himself to public judgment with a clean conscience. But can we say the same for other former governors, presidents, and public officials?

Nigeria, often referred to as the “Giant of Africa,” is a country blessed with immense resources. Its people, resilient and industrious, have continued to thrive despite the frequent political mismanagement that has characterized the nation’s leadership. Time and again, the media is flooded with reports of former governors, ministers, presidents, and even lawmakers implicated in corrupt practices. These range from the looting of state coffers to gross mismanagement of funds meant for the development of public infrastructure.

The consequences of such corrupt leadership are all too clear. Nigeria’s roads are deplorable, healthcare is in shambles, the education sector is underfunded, and unemployment continues to skyrocket. Meanwhile, these leaders, past and present, often live in lavish luxury, far removed from the suffering of the common man.

Yet, even in the face of these damning realities, very few Nigerian leaders have come forward with the kind of transparency Samuel demonstrated, or the forthrightness shown by El-Rufai. This raises a critical question: Can any of Nigeria’s past governors or presidents stand before the people, as Samuel did, and say, “I have not stolen. I have not oppressed”? Can they invite scrutiny and confidently state that their hands are clean?

The issue of corruption in Nigeria is not new. From the oil boom of the 1970s to the present day, corruption has been a persistent challenge. Countless investigative reports have revealed the looting of public funds by government officials, many of whom are former governors or presidents. Several of these leaders, after leaving office, have faced investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), with varying degrees of success in holding them accountable.

Oyo State Governor Makinde Begs Wike As FCT Minister Battles PDP Governors

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has made a public appeal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, urging him not to cause political instability in Oyo State.

The plea comes after Wike threatened to create political crisis in states governed by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governors who support Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Makinde, speaking during the Ijaw World Congress reception in Port Harcourt on Saturday, organized in honour of Wike, said: “I came from Oyo to identify with my brother and the celebrant of today (Nyesom Wike).

“When I showed up in Rivers yesterday (Friday), I told him that I brought a peace offering because he has been boasting that he would put fire in some states. I told him, please, don’t set fire in Oyo State.”

The governor’s remarks were made in response to Wike’s earlier comments, in which the FCT minister allegedly warned that he would “put fire” in states of PDP governors who backed Fubara’s administration.

During the event, Governor Makinde also praised Wike for his work during his tenure as Rivers State governor, particularly in the area of infrastructure development.

#FearlessInOctober: “Opposition Leaders Intent 0n Utilizing The Igbos As Sacrificial Lambs” -Ohanaeze Ndigbo Warns Igbo Community Not To Take Part in Plan Nationwide Protests

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has declared that the southeast will abstain from the proposed October 1 nationwide protests.

The group made this known in a statement by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro on Saturday, September 29.

Isiguzoro stated that the group is encountering increasing pressure from the organizers and conveners of the forthcoming October 1st nationwide protests, dubbed “Fearless and National Survival Day.”

“These agents are, with fervent desperation, attempting to lure our Southeast residents, alongside Igbo communities residing in the Northern and Western regions, to endorse and participate in this affair.

“Disturbingly, we have uncovered that two former presidential candidates from the 2023 elections are covertly orchestrating these protests, enlisting surrogates who masquerade as civil society organizations.

“Their primary objective appears to be to secure the endorsement of the Southeast and the Igbo populace for this October 1st demonstration.

Significant Number Of Politicians In Nigeria Engage In Corrupt Practices -Ndume

The Nigeria senator Ali Ndume has claims that a significant number of politicians in Nigeria engage in corrupt practices.

He said, “It is only in this country that somebody had no money yesterday or last week, but the following week, he buys 10 cars, buys jets and his family will celebrate with him.”

“Our major challenge in this country is corruption. Up till now, we have no law that can proactively or reactively address the issue of corruption in the country.

“If you see somebody in our system, especially in politics or government, and he is not corrupt, then he is lucky that he is God-fearing.

“Otherwise, it is only in Nigeria that you steal money and you walk freely and you are celebrated.

“If you come into an area like this, people would start lobbying you and prostrate before you even when they know that the money was stolen.”

Gbajabiamila Words To Tinubu Over Cabinet Reshuffle Disclose,Full Details

Ahead of the confirmed cabinet reshuffle, a report has shown that some ministers and their godfathers have intensified lobbying to retain and remain in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet.

LeadNaija reported on Wednesday, that the presidency confirmed that the Nigerian leader was planning a shakeup in his cabinet.

According to Punch, some aides in the presidency disclosed that some ministers have commenced frantic lobbying to be in the president’s good books.

One aide was quoted as saying, “Yes, that is a typical thing. Some of the ministers will be calling their godfathers to influence the President. It is a normal thing. But the President will still do what is on his mind for the country.”

The sources also revealed that some ministers, scared of losing their positions in the federal executive council, are now seeking the help of Tinubu’s allies and associates for “soft-landing.”

One of these president’s allies and associates is Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff (CoS) to Tinubu.

Gbajabiamila was said to have shown concern given the intense lobbying and pressure being mounted on the president by those seeking assurances on the fate of their protégés in Tinubu’s cabinet.

As a result of this, one presidential source revealed that Gbajabiamila, the immediate past Speaker of the House of Representatives, advised Tinubu to take some time off in the UK.

This, the aide added, explained the reason Nigerians had no knowledge of the president’s whereabouts for a few days.

The source stated, “Since reports filtered out that the President would soon reshuffle his cabinet, he has been under immense pressure from political godfathers and ministers who are afraid that they may be dropped from the cabinet.

“Due to the intense pressure, the CoS had to advise the President to take some days off in the United Kingdom after concluding the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit in China two weeks ago.

Floods: FG To Release Water From Cameroon Dam To Nigeria

The Federal Government on Tuesday announced that it will commence the gradual release of water from the Lagdo Dam of Cameroon.

The announcement was made on behalf of the FG by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA).

According to the agency, the water would be released from the dam into Nigeria gradually to avoid flooding.

Umar Mohammed, the Director General of NIHSA said the water will be released within the next seven days and that the first phase of the release process is set at 100 cubic meters per second (approximately 8.64 million cubic meters per day).

This process, Mohammed said will start from September 16, with a potential increase to 1,000 cubic meters per second.

He noted that the final rate will depend on inflows from the upstream Garoua River, the primary source of the reservoir, which also feeds into the Benue River, a key waterway in Nigeria.

“The release will be regulated to ensure that water levels do not exceed the capacity of the Benue River system, preventing major flooding in downstream areas of Nigeria,” Mohammed said.

Further noting that there is no immediate cause for alarm, the NIHSA boss said water levels along the Benue River remain within safe limits.

Tension Arise As Soldiers Position In Moriki Town, Zamfara Community Follows Bandits’ Deadline For N30m Levy (PHOTOS)

There is tension in Moriki town, Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State as the deadline for payment of a N30 million levy imposed by notorious bandits’ leader, Bello Turji, has elapsed.

The levy was imposed after over 100 of Turji’s cows were allegedly killed by military personnel three weeks ago.

To boost security, additional soldiers have been deployed to the area, alongside personnel from the state’s Community Protection Guards (CPG).

“We are happy because the presence of security personnel gives us a kind of relief,” Aminu Musa, a resident said of the deployment of security operatives. “The leader of the troop had assured us of adequate protection of our lives.”

However, Iliyasu Ali, another resident, expressed concern about the bandits’ capabilities.. View Photos

“They are carrying more sophisticated weapons than the military. So, our people are in serious panic as the deadline for the payment of the levy ends today.”

Recall that the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, recently declared that Turji’s days are numbered, announcing a manhunt for the bandit.

Musa made the declaration while briefing journalists on the military’s operations across the country on Tuesday in Abuja.

“Turji’s capture is imminent,” he said.

He added, “On the issue of Turji, like I said, it is just a deranged individual who feels power, but I can bet you that it is just a matter of time.

“We are going to get him and I can assure you within the shortest possible time, we are going to address that issue.

“That is why we all must come together to work with members of the armed forces and security agencies to deny them the ability to move freely within our communities.

“Please do not give them any support. Do not give them information on the movement of troops because this is what is happening.

“Most of the area where this thing is continuing is because we have informants within the communities.

“I have always reminded Nigerians that asymmetric warfare is something that should not be allowed to commence because once it is done, it is a very difficult operation.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday, September 11, declared an indefinite strike action at the Gombe State University (GSU).

The union’s branch chairman, Suleiman Salihu, during a press briefing, said the strike was declared over lingering welfare issues yet to be addressed.

Salihu stated that the action became inevitable following the poor teaching and learning activities at the institution.

He said that for a long time, ASUU had engaged the state through various avenues but all to no avail.

Stating that no tangible result has emanated from its amicable resolution, Salihu said the institution has failed to implement the N30,000 minimum wage approved by the governor, leaving workers with the outdated salary table of 2012.
