In Nigeria, some news reports are so shocking that their long-term impact could be catastrophic. The recent disclosure by Nigeria’s Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, is one such report — a revelation that exposes a crisis far worse than many realize.

He revealed that *only* N36 million of the N218 billion allocated for health in Nigeria’s 2025 budget was actually released and spent. That’s a staggering *0.000165%* of the planned budget — an almost unbelievable figure that should shake the conscience of every Nigerian.

Otherwise, how could a mere *0.000165* of the health budget be released, and nobody raised an alarm?

We keep electing and re-electing individuals unfit for public service into our most important positions.

In many respects, we are our own grave-diggers. Nigeria’s shameful record of high maternal and infant mortality rates, among other humiliations, inexorably stems from our choices of public officials.

And if there is one thing that epitomizes our collective failure, it’s the careless way we handle budgets. Since 1999, no government has seriously implemented its budgets, and the situation only worsens each year.
