Former Governor Mimiko Meets Buni, Set To Join APC


LAGOS – Barring the unforeseen, former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, will dump the Zenith La­bour Party (ZLP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is coming on the heels of the series of meet­ings the former governor has had with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Besides Malami, Mimiko had reportedly met with the Chairman of the APC Na­tional Caretaker Commit­tee and governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, apart from two other governors.
It was unclear as at press time if the ZLP’s governor­ship candidate in the Octo­ber 10, 2020 election, Agboo­la Ajayi, would also return to the APC.

Ajayi had dumped APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to run against his estranged boss and governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, at the poll. He later dumped the PDP for ZLP after losing the governorship primaries to Eyitayo Jegede.

A source close the na­tional headquarters of the APC confided in our cor­respondent that the move to draft the former gov­ernor to the party was to strengthen it.

“From the look of things, our man (Aketi) appears not to be on same page with the Villa owing to his recent stance on certain national issues.
“So we are working hard to ensure the former gover­nor joins us to take charge of the party because we cannot afford to toy with any state in the South West,” he said.

But the Ondo State Com­missioner for Information and, Donald Ojogo, has dismissed insinuations that the positions taken by Akeredolu were targeted at the Villa or the Presidency.

“It’s a good thing if those who left the party or even wiling ones are coming to join the party; but the slant that Governor Akeredolu’s stance on some national is­sues is responsible for the search for fresh frontiers is dismissible.

“Whatever position he has taken in the past or would take on national is­sues can only be propelled by altruism and patriotism.

“So, if anyone finds op­portunity under such cover to blackmail the governor as being at loggerheads with the villa, it will be un­fortunate.
“But if it happens, we won’t be surprised because some persons take politics to boundless levels, not minding whether the well­being of their folks is en­dangered or not.”

When contacted, Eni Akinsola, Mimiko’s media aide, did not respond to text message sent to his line.

Presidential zoning is now a game of chess for both APC and PDP.

A Jonathan candidate for PDP in the presidential race will openly deflate the voting basket of APC in the south because the excuses such as blame game, corruption etc won't be bought by the people.

Moreso, Buhari's nepotism, fanatism, racism and incompetence has opened people's eye to the fact APC cannot manage our diversity.

Tinubu's candidacy from the south under APC will only sell in the core north, provided PDP picked a weak norther Muslim. A strong running mate for PDP from the core north will give APC a big headache and running for their money.

Imagine someone like Kwakwanso or Sule Lamido serving as a running mate to a southern PDP hopeful, such a presidential election tense and interesting.

APC should forget their 'blame game' strategy because Nigerians are now wiser than 2015 and 2019.

Who is Simon Ekpa?
