To claim "Yoruba is greater than Nigeria" is to honor a profound truth: the Yoruba identity, with its ancient origins, vibrant traditions, and global influence, exists independently of Nigeria’s artificial borders. Just as people of British descent or Jewish heritage maintain their cultural identities beyond the confines of a single nation-state, the Yoruba identity thrives across borders, unbound by the political entity of Nigeria.

The Timeless Roots of Yoruba Civilization
The Yoruba story begins in Ile-Ife, revered as the cradle of their civilization. Archaeological evidence dates Ile-Ife’s prominence to the 11th century, a testament to its enduring significance. Yoruba oral traditions proclaim Ile-Ife as the divine origin of humanity, where deities shaped the world. This spiritual and historical anchor underscores a civilization that flourished long before modern nation-states.

Yoruba kingdoms—Oyo, Ijebu, Egba, and Ife—were sophisticated societies with intricate governance, robust trade networks, and formidable militaries. The Oyo Empire, for instance, was a regional powerhouse, its influence extending across West Africa through diplomacy and commerce. These kingdoms produced exquisite bronze sculptures, terracotta works, and philosophical systems, rivaling the finest creations of their era.

Nigeria: A Colonial Invention
Nigeria emerged in 1914 from the British amalgamation of diverse regions, a bureaucratic act that grouped over 250 ethnic groups with distinct languages, cultures, and histories. To say "Yoruba is greater than Nigeria" is to affirm that Yoruba civilization, like Jewish or British cultural identities, is older, deeper, and broader than the nation-state of Nigeria. The Yoruba existed before Nigeria’s colonial creation and thrive beyond its borders—from the sacred groves of Ile-Ife to the vibrant Yoruba communities in Benin, Togo, and the global diaspora. Their identity is not contingent on Nigerian citizenship, just as Jewish identity does not require Israeli citizenship or British heritage does not demand UK residency.
