The African Democratic Congress on Tuesday accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of singling out opposition figures for politically motivated investigations, alleging that the agency’s latest target is its Interim National Chairman and former Senate President, David Mark. In a statement by its acting National Publicity Secretary, Bola Abdullahi, the ADC said the EFCC had embarked on a “choreographed media trial” against coalition leaders after the detention of former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday and the invitation of former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha. “The EFCC has now surreptitiously started excavating all the files from David Mark’s tenure as Senate President, 10 years after he left office,” Abdullahi said, questioning the timing of the investigations. “The pattern of ignoring APC stalwarts with fresher and well-documented cases, while targeting opposition figures with stale allegations, is proof of selective justice and an assault on political freedom.” The party alleged that the crackdown was part of the ruling All Progressives Congress’ strategy to weaken the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. It urged Nigerians to demand an end to what it described as “witch-hunt disguised as anti-corruption.” He said, “Following our earlier release on Monday, we wish to bring to the public’s attention fresh details that expose the extent of this coordinated assault on the opposition. The detention of one of our leaders, former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, has marked the start of the crackdown intended to intimidate key leaders of the opposition and discredit them through media trials. “Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha served as Governor of Imo State for just seven months, from May 29, 2019, until the Supreme Court removed him on January 14, 2020 — a full five years and seven months ago. We, therefore, wonder what makes investigating him suddenly urgent now.” Abdullahi accused the EFCC of selective justice and an assault on political freedom, saying, “Having failed to stop the coalition, the jittery ruling party’s next move is to discredit its leaders by getting the EFCC to accuse them of looting the entire treasuries. These are calculated media trials; it matters little whether there is a basis for these accusations — the game is the circus show.” Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused President Bola Tinubu of “objectifying the fight against corruption as a political tool to coerce opposition leaders into the ruling party.” In a statement on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Atiku said, “The only reason the EFCC has detained the former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is because he is a member of the opposition coalition. It is a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration’s agenda to harass, intimidate, and decimate the opposition.” Atiku accused Tinubu of abuse of power, saying, “It is as though today, anyone who associates with the opposition is a target for phantom corruption allegations, and as soon as they are coerced into the political agenda of President Tinubu, their ‘sins’ are forgiven. That is not how to fight the monster of corruption. Indeed, such tendencies provide the stimulant for corruption to thrive. While the genuine fight against corruption is a matter that requires the total support of all Nigerians, the objectification of it as a political agenda should be roundly condemned.” Also, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria critised the move against opposition politicians, describing the EFCC as “an obedient lapdog deployed to do the dirty political work of the ruling All Progressives Congress.” In a statement on Tuesday, HURIWA National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the move was intended to “break the spine of the opposition before the 2027 race.” Onwubiko said, “Every discerning Nigerian can see the handwriting on the wall. The EFCC is no longer the fearless watchdog envisioned by law.” EFCC, Presidency reject claims Hoever, the EFCC dismissed the accusations as “self-serving, diversionary, narrow and idle.” The EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, in a statement, said, “If I am not condemned for investigating both former and serving strong ruling party governors and ministers, I should not be condemned for also investigating opposition figures. Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption.” Source: https://punchng.com/efcc-targeting-david-mark-after-tambuwal-ihedioha-adc/

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has declared controversial musician, Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, wanted for a rape-related case. This was contained in a post shared by the agency on Friday. According to the post, Okoye is also wanted for cyberbullying and cyberstalking. NAPTIP urged anyone with credible information on his whereabouts to contact the agency immediately or report to the nearest police station. It would be recalled that Darlington was scheduled to appear before the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons on May 30th over his claim of having sex with a 15-year-old girl during a live Instagram video. Darlington narrated an incident that he said occurred about 10 years ago at a hotel, where he claimed to have slept with a 15-year-old girl who was a virgin, resulting in bloodied sheets. He stated that he had to pay N2,000 to the hotel staff to have the sheets changed. He expressed his disdain for working for anyone, especially in a hotel, by saying, “Before they would come to change the sheets for me, I had to give N2,000.” He added, “It’s a difficult situation to ask an adult to come and clean up the blood that I caused from the body of a 15-year-old girl. I can never work for anyone, no way. I only work for myself.” Source: https://guardian.ng/news/nigeria/metro/naptip-declares-darlington-okoye-wanted-over-alleged-rape-case/

The suspended Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has arrived at the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, in Abuja for her arraignment over alleged defamation. Akpoti-Uduaghan entered the courtroom at approximately 10:30 am, ahead of the session scheduled to commence at 11:00 am, awaiting the entrance of the presiding judge. The charge was filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mohammed Abubakar, on behalf of the Federal Government against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. In the criminal charge, marked CR/297/25, the Federal Government accuses Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, the sole defendant, of making defamatory statements against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during a live television broadcast. The charge lists the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, as nominal complainants. It alleges that the Senator claimed Bello had conspired with Akpabio to orchestrate her assassination outside Abuja, disguising it as a mob or local attack. According to the Federal Government, these allegations were made during a live broadcast on Channels Television’s Politics Today on April 3, 2025. The FG argues that Akpoti-Uduaghan knowingly or recklessly made these imputations, fully aware that they could harm the reputation of the individuals involved. She is alleged to have said, “Let’s ask the Senate President why in the first instance did he withdraw my security, if not to make me vulnerable to attacks? He then emphasised that I should be killed, but I should be killed in Kogi. What is important to me is to stay alive because dead men tell no tales. Who is going to get justice for me?” The charge also cites her statements during the programme, “That you, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on or about the 3rd day of April 2025, during the same Politics Today programme on Channels Television in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, made the following imputation concerning Yahaya Adoza Bello, former Governor of Kogi State. ‘It was part of the meeting, the discussions that Akpabio had with Yahaya Bello that night, to eliminate me. When he met with him, he then emphasised that I should be killed, but I should be killed in Kogi.’ You knew or had reason to believe that such imputations would harm the reputation of Yahaya Adoza Bello, former Governor of Kogi State.” The senator is also accused of making defamatory statements about Senate President Akpabio during a telephone conversation with Sandra C. Duru in Abuja on 27 March 2025. The alleged statement is as follows: “That girl that was killed, what’s her name, umm Imoren Iniubong, her organs were actually used for the wife, because the wife was really ill… when they killed the girl, and her organs were used for the wife.” The Federal Government contends that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan knew or ought to have known that this claim would harm the reputation of Senator Godswill Akpabio. Additionally, Akpabio, Bello, and four others have been listed as witnesses for the trial. Source : https://punchng.com/breaking-alleged-defamation-natasha-arrives-in-court-for-arraignment/

The new terrorist group called Mahmuda has invaded Duruma Village in Baruten Local Council of Kwara State, killing three people in the process. Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen Olufemi Oluyede, has appealed to the government and people of Benue State to support military efforts in ending the persistent killings and attacks in the state. This was as the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Abubakar, linked the recent resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the North-East, particularly in Borno State, to the group’s renewed efforts to destabilise countries across the Sahel region, including Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Republic. The recent attack on the village happened in the early hours of yesterday. However, a highly-placed source said the terrorist group took advantage of the local hunters in Ilorin on training for the National Forest Guard, recently approved by the Presidency to provide security for communities. The Mahmuda group, in a fresh attack on Duruma village in Baruten Local Council, yesterday, slaughtered three villagers who have since been buried. The COAS, in April, visited the areas after which soldiers were deployed to the thick forests to flush out the terrorists, during which 12 of them were arrested. Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who also visited the troubled communities, gave 25 motorcycles to the local hunters as logistics to complement the soldiers. It was gathered from the locals that members of the terrorist group never left the areas, but were incapacitated by the presence of the soldiers and local hunters. A source (name withheld) stated: “Our local hunters are in Ilorin for the training of the National Forest Guard on how they can effectively use weapons to fight the terrorists. “Eventually, the Mahmuda people felt their absence because they were no longer in the areas they used to be, so they struck those areas and killed three villagers. Though the soldiers eventually came to the areas, firing gunshots in the air after they had fled. A week ago, they also set fire to a farm settlement.” The COAS, during a visit to Governor Hyacinth Alia at the Benue State Government House in Makurdi, emphasised the need for credible and timely intelligence from locals to aid military operations. “The military cannot do it alone. We need the cooperation of the people to stop these senseless killings and destruction,” the Army chief stated, describing the attacks by armed herders and militia groups as barbaric. He reassured the governor of the army’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in the state, stating the military’s determination to end the violence in the shortest possible time. Alia thanked the COAS for visiting the state and taking the situation seriously. He expressed confidence that the visit would mark a turning point in security efforts across Benue. Speaking to journalists in Kaduna, yesterday, at the end of his two-day working visit to military institutions in the state, the minister assured Nigerians that the Federal Government was actively tackling the threat. He noted that the Nigerian Armed Forces gained momentum in the last two weeks and neutralised a significant number of insurgents. Addressing the continued attacks in parts of the country despite gains made against banditry in the North-West, he explained that each security challenge varies in nature. The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has announced the release of N50 billion by the Federal Government to the academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities. This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Wednesday by the Director Press, Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo. Alausa said that the money was for settlement of earned allowances, as promised by President Bola Tinubu. According to him, this ‘landmark development’ stands as yet another testament to Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to fundamentally transform Nigeria’s education sector. “It reflects the administration’s bold resolve to transition the nation from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy through strategic investments in education, infrastructure and human capital. “This intervention is not just a financial transaction, it is a reaffirmation of our president’s belief in the capacity of Nigerian youths and the invaluable role that academic and non-academic staff play in nurturing them. Pope Francis’ funeral will take place on Saturday April 26th in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Vatican announced on Tuesday, and will feature simpler rituals in keeping with the more down-to-earth, informal style that became a trademark of Francis’ papacy. Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over the ceremony, and the rites will follow rules issued by the Vatican last year, under Francis’ direction. On Tuesday, the pope’s body lay in rest at his residency, Casa Santa Marta, a guesthouse in Vatican City. Images released by the Vatican showed Francis in an open coffin, dressed in red and white vestments and holding a rosary. On Wednesday, the coffin will be taken in a procession to St. Peter’s Basilica to lie in state for about three days, with mourners allowed to visit and pay tribute. Memorial Masses for Francis were being offered across the world on Tuesday, including at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney and Manila Cathedral in the Philippines. Flags flew at half-staff at government buildings and days of official mourning began in a number of countries including Italy, Brazil, Lebanon, India and Argentina, the pontiff’s homeland. Political and religious leaders from around the globe are expected to attend the pope’s funeral service. Francis had confronted some over their treatment of dispossessed groups, especially migrants. President Trump, who was one of them, said he planned to attend, adding another wrinkle for Vatican planners, given the size of his entourage. It is likely to be Mr. Trump’s first overseas trip this term.
