UPDATE 3: The Nest Is Finally Empty!

Something unexpected happened today. I just realized that the mother bird and her chicks have all left the nest. The place is now completely quiet, and there is no more noise coming from inside.

Honestly, I thought they would stay a little longer, so I was surprised when I discovered that the nest was empty. I kept wondering why the mother had suddenly started staying inside the nest after I released her, and now I’m beginning to understand that perhaps she was spending more time caring for her young ones before they were ready to leave.

I don’t know exactly when they left or where they have gone, but I’m happy knowing that I allowed them to live freely and raise their young ones without further disturbance.

Looking back, this whole experience has taught me something about nature. What started as an accidental situation turned into an interesting experience that made me pay attention to these little creatures in a way I never had before.

And to everyone who commented, advised me, joked about pepper soup, or even accused me of wanting to eat the poor bird so thank you all. I enjoyed reading your comments, and I appreciate the advice.

One thing is certain, I will not destroy the nest. I’ll leave it just the way it is, in case another bird decides to make it a home in the future. As long as it doesn’t create any safety problems, nature is welcome to share my window.

I’m glad I made the decision to free the bird, and I’m happy I came here to hear different opinions.

They came, raised their family, and left me with a story to tell. Perhaps they have their own story to tell, too.

I actually didn’t trap the bird intentionally in the first place; it happened when I closed the window and later realized she was inside. My main concern was that she had young ones and I didn’t want to separate her from them or cause any harm. That’s why I decided to ask for people’s opinions before doing anything. I’ve released her now, so she and the other birds are free to come and go as they please

I completely understand you. I was genuinely confused too, which was why I brought the question here in the first place. I never expected a simple bird story to make front page and turn into a whole Nairaland debate.

At this rate, I think I’ve officially opened a bird maternity home without knowing it. If the young ones decide to visit me later, they are welcome. I just hope they don’t start bringing their own families too but for now, I’ll leave the place peaceful for them.

Thankfully, I didn’t intentionally trap or harm the bird but I have opened it and let the bird go. I’m glad I asked before doing anything else because I genuinely wanted to make the right decision.

Exactly! That’s what I eventually realized. At first I didn’t fully understand why the bird kept coming back, but after watching carefully I noticed the nest and the little ones. That’s when everything started making sense. I’ve released the bird and I’m leaving them alone now.

I really hope so. That’s another reason I didn’t want to betray that trust. Since they chose this place to raise their young, I’ll respect their space and leave them alone. Hopefully they continue coming back safely.

This is actually a valid question. Now you’ve opened another debate entirely. Where is the compassion committee when a rat enters the house? But honestly, I think there’s a difference between accidentally trapping an animal and deliberately keeping it. I just didn’t want to harm the bird or separate it from its young ones, which was why I came here to ask.

People who keep animals caged are attracting bad karma because it’s a form of torture. Imagine a goldfish that God created to swim through the oceans, or a bird that is supposed to be flying from continent to continent, being kept in a cage. If you need meat, then kill it quickly.

We need more giant nature reserves like Kruger, Serengeti and Yankari where these animals can roam freely while being observed by humans in their natural habitat.

I understand your point. I also believe wild animals should generally be allowed to live freely in their natural environment. In my case, I wasn’t intentionally keeping the bird I accidentally trapped it when I closed the window and only realized afterward. Once I understood what had happened, I opened the window and released it. I’m also going to leave the family alone now and let them raise their chicks peacefully.

This comment really puts it into perspective. Imagine having the entire sky available to you and suddenly finding yourself trapped somewhere you can’t escape from. That’s actually what made me decide to release it immediately. I would rather allow the bird to live freely and take care of its young ones.

That’s exactly what I’ve decided to do. I’ve released the bird and I’m not touching the nest or the chicks. I’ll let them finish raising the young ones and leave naturally. Once they’re gone, I’ll consider what to do with the nest. Thanks for the advice. 🙏

I have experienced something similar before. In my case, it was doves. They built a nest on top of my cut-out fuse, and they would always come around and make this annoying sound.

Although I wasn't comfortable with it, I decided to leave them because of my daughter. She enjoyed watching them whenever they came around. But it got to a point where lots of things started running through my mind because of the potential risk they could pose.

I started thinking that the dry materials they used to build the nest could potentially catch fire if there was an electrical fault, so I decided to prioritize safety and remove it.

I completely understand your concern. That’s actually something I’ve started thinking about too. In my case, the nest is around the window, so I’m also going to make sure that leaving them there doesn’t create any safety problem. For now, I’ll allow them to finish raising the chicks without disturbing them, and once the young ones are strong enough to leave, I’ll look at how to prevent another nest from being built in a dangerous spot. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Of Course, you should let the bird go, If you were a bird, how would you like to be kept in a cage? besides this bird may have a nest somewhere with little chicks to feed and care for, and you are depriving the chicks of a parent bird to find food for them.

That’s exactly what I eventually did. I released the bird because I realized the chicks could be depending on the parents for food. The other bird was even outside waiting while the female was trapped, so I didn’t want to separate them. I’ve left the window open now and I’m allowing them to come and go freely.
