Sometimes, things are hard for the shaitan just like it is for humans, thus Allah has decreed. When it became tough for him, he resorted to stealing, Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) caught him but he did not know him because he came in the form of an old man. Shaitan made an excuse and pleaded with Abu huraira not to take him to the Prophet and Abu Hurairah took pity on him and left him, this happened twice, and he said that if the man comes for the third time, he won't let him go, but the third time, seeing that Abu Hurairah will not spare him, he made an offer that Abu Hurairah will not resist, that was when he taught him the dua. Shaitan knew the importance of the dua but was not going to tell him, the only reason why he did that was because he was in a desperate situation and did not want to be taken to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and so he gave that up. the Prophet affirm that what He said was true even though he is a liar.

The verse Ayatul kursiyy is as affirmed by the Prophet (peace be upon him), the greatest verse in the Quran, if i remember correctly. It mentions some of Allah's greatest Names, His Power over the creation, affirms His Oneness, right to be worshiped Alone, and so on.

I caught him and said, "I will take you to Allah's Messenger (saw)" Then Abu Huraira (r.a) described the whole narration and said: That person said (to me), "Please don't take me to Allah's Messenger (saw) and I will tell you a few words by which Allah will benefit you. When you go to your bed, recite Ayat-al-Kursi, (2.255) for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and Satan will not be able to come near you till dawn." When the Prophet (saw) heard the story he said to me, "He who came to you at night, told you the truth although he is a liar; and it was Satan."
