We've been facing a cost of living crisis here for the last 3 years. What the UK government did would be considered suicidal in Nigeria, but they created an environment to remove money from circulation and stick to reducing inflation no matter the cost.

The consequences have been profound. Job markets have been decimated. Record number of companies have gone insolvent. Hundreds of thousands if not in the millions have been laid off. Entire councils (like states) announced bankruptcy. Birmingham City Council (the 2nd biggest in the country) went bust trying to implement equal pay between male and female staff

The cure for inflation is incredibly bitter. If Tinubu even dared to think about it, he would probably be shot on sight.
We said the same thing when they removed subsidy.
I thought this country would burn after a few months.
One year later we adjusted.
This is with the extravagant spending of the FG.

You underestimate the current Nigerian's ability to take punishment.

What is the FG doing to reduce inflation? Why should labor be demanding the FG to implement policies to reduce inflation when that's why an same government should be actively doing?

Abeg make we no transfer the failures of the government to implement policies to battle inflation on labor.

On this minimum wage issue, NLC and TUC don try (Apart from the outrageous amount they are calling anyways grin )

The major issue we pray for is the government to tackle inflation.
That is what is killing us.
Let this currency have value and 100k will do alot. Infact even 70k will do alot.

Solution to cost of living cannot be to increase wages. If you had scant hope that this government could somehow roku to reduce inflation, you might as well kiss it goodbye when you quintuple a cleaner's salary from 30k to 150k, and bringing their earning power into parity with the lower end of skilled labour.

Hyperinflation aside, that's going to wreak havoc on societal dynamics. It's an unspoken rule because of how unchristianlike it is to say, but I-better-pass-my -neigbour is an integral component of maintaining social class order.

If you bump cleaner salaries into 150k fresh graduate territory, without bumping them up into mid-career earning territory, you're going to have a very unhappy professional class -:and this is typically the sector of society that produces the biggest threat to any government.

I don't think 100k minimum wage of feasible in Nigeria, but then again I don't think Nigeria itself is a feasible contraption, so who knows?
The government doesn't have to be told that just wage increase is the end nau.
If you and I know this, shouldn't the government already know it.

But the people have also waited for a whole year and the price of things has risen beyond comprehension.

So my question to you is, what would you have the citizens do?
Keep waiting or at the very minimum get some relief while the government hopefully does what every normal thinking human being expects them to do

What does the post mean then? NASS does not need a committee to determine their own wages, they determine their own wages themselves from their own budget.

Minimum wage committee is made up of FG, State Government and Organized Private Sector, each component will contribute before they reach an agreed amount.

Using whatever NASS members earn as salary and allowance as a basis for the outrageous amount they are calling is an exercise in futility.

Infact it makes more sense to showcase the executive reckless spending just like the Hajj 90billion subsidy and the likes as a basis than what NASS earn.
But everything is being shown.
The executive ooo.. The legislature.

I personally believe nothing is impossible to rectify.
If citizens actually go mad, that same nass will let go of alot of their salaries.

A political union is making outrageous demands and yet people are supporting them just out of spite for the government of the day.

Politics should always follow economics but looks like it is otherwise and people are just being played to the gallery.

Under what Iterations can the revenue of the country sustain those silly numbers. An extremely poor country by every economic, fiscal and revenue metric

People should readily make sacrifices but one which is worthy. Not being used to further some barbed agenda.

APPEAL TO ORGANISED LABOUR, BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA

This is a heartfelt and deeply considered appeal to the Labour Unions to continue along the path of negotiations with the Federal and State Governments, under the auspices of the Tripartite Committee that has been established to fashion out a new, realistic minimum wage for the Nigerian people.

As Government, we are desirous of a peaceful outcome, and we will do everything to make this happen. Yesterday, the leadership of the National Assembly met with the Unions. Today, we have offered another invitation to the Unions, to meet with us and continue our discussions.

We will continue to engage, and continue to make ourselves very available in the context of these negotiations on behalf of the Nigerian people

Let me make it clear that we are not opponents on this negotiating table. We are united by the fact that we want the best for the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for all 200 million citizens of the country.

We have a responsibility to strike a measured and realistic balance, in this effort to arrive at a new minimum wage for Nigerians.

Let us remind ourselves of the fundamental facts:

The minimum wage is not only for public sector workers. It will be binding on the private sector as well. This reality must be factored into the negotiations.

As I have explained earlier, Labour’s current proposal of N494,000 is an increase of 1,547 percent on the existing wage, and translates into an annual wage bill of 9.5 Trillion Naira for the Federal Government of Nigeria alone.

This is apart from its cost implications for subnational governments and private sector employees. Such a wage bill would cripple the Nigerian economy, by leading to massive job losses especially in the private sector.

The National Consumer Credit Scheme and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) are additional significant demonstrations of a determination to bring relief to the people of Nigeria.

We want the Labour Unions to understand that the relief that Nigerians are expecting, and that they fully deserve, will not come only in the form of increased wages. It will also come as efforts to reduce the cost of living, and to ensure that more money stays in the pockets of Nigerians.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) is firmly committed to doing what is right, reasonable and sustainable regarding these minimum wage negotiations. We call on the Labour Unions to reciprocate this gesture in the interest of the nation.

I thank you for listening.
