THE Lagos State government on Tuesday last week presented news car to two teachers for excellent performances.

Funmilayo Akinlade of African Church Primary School, Mosan, Alimoso emerged the best teacher in the Primary School Category while Bose Deji-Oderinde of Wesley Girls’ Junior Secondary School, Yaba, emerged with the highest rating in the Secondary School Category.

The two teachers were among 57 awardees that were honoured by the state government at this year’s Education Merit Award ceremony held in Lagos.

Presenting the cars, Commissioner for Education, Olayinka Oladunjoye, said the initiative was part of ongoing activities of the state government to promote excellence in schools.

Oladunjoye reiterated that education remains a critical sector of any society because it ensures the transmission of positive core values from one generation to another. And this explains why teachers remain the strongest tool in the delivery of qualitative and standard education in the world.

The commissioner, therefore, assured the academic community that the State government would continue to embark on programmes and activities that would enhance teaching and learning in the schools.

She also appealed to stakeholders to continue to support the government in pursuit of a brighter and rewarding future for the children, in the hope of a greater and prosperous nation for us all.

The objective of the yearly award is to recognize and reward deserving public schools, teachers, principals, students/pupils and personnel in the education sector for their hard-work, high performance, high productivity and achievement in their fields of endeavours.

Oladunjoye noted that nine of the awardees had been shortlisted to compete with their counterparts from other States for the President’s Teachers and Schools’ national awards later in the year. Two of the state’s principals – Ayodele Abiodun Ayerin of Vetland Senior Secondary School, Agege, and Emmanuel Olu Adebiyi of Iju Junior Grammar School, Iju – have won national awards in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

Chairman of the occasion, a former Head of Service in the state, Adesegun Ogunlewe, earlier commended the State government for keeping faith with the state’s workforce and enjoined teachers to take advantage of ongoing reforms to enhance productivity.

Ogunlewe noted that the award ceremony is good evidence that the government is blazing the trail in human resource management. He urged the awardees to continue to put in their best, citing that the underlining reward for good work is more work.

Fifty-five other awardees ranging from students, teachers, principals, schools and staff were also honoured with different gift items such as freezer, refrigerators, and television set among others.

FOR decades, the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has conducted the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Anglophone West African countries. From tens of thousands of candidates, it now decides the fate of millions of youths who are long for tertiary education. This steady increase in the number of youths writing the examination has continued to throw up bigger challenges to the council, cardinal amongst them, the assessment of candidates’ performances.

In Nigeria for instance, the body conducts examination in 37 different subjects with some of them having three components including multiple choice, essay and practical papers.

In the 2013 May/June WASCCE, 71, 722 examiners were engaged in marking and scoring of over 1.6 million candidates. Not only has the involvement of such large number of examiners entail huge financial commitment; it also has scoring lapses and sundry implications.

In fact, findings reveal that in manual marking and scoring of scripts, lots of errors are committed by examiners and they range from omissions, losses occasioned by script movements, mood of examiners at the point of marking just to mention a few.

These and many other factors, perhaps are what led the council to resort to the deployment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in most of its activities, the latest attempt being its gradual transiting from manual scripts marking to electronic marking (e-marking).

It was in realisation of ICT’s capacity to solving problems associated with manual marking of essay scripts that the council, in 2012 launched the e-marking portfolio on a trial scale.

The project, however, commenced with the 2013 Nov/Dec WASSCE diet, with Biology (practical paper) in Lagos. Building Construction was also subjected to e-marking. And with this development, two subjects were successfully marked and scored using e-marker.

From empirical observation, the council elected to tow this line having observed that e-marking system is gradually being enthroned as the standard practice in all developed nations due to its accuracy, efficiency and reliability.

The availability of Internet facilities and connectivity concerns, have also been identified as some of the likely factors that would hinder effective utilisation of e-marking nationwide.

However, some analysts are of the view that if the benefits of e-marking must be fully harnessed, converting other subjects to constrained questions and ensuring the proliferation of the marking centres across the country remains key.

“All an examiner is required to do to mark the e-dummy is to follow the prompt once the marking process commences. Afterwards, candidates’ scores are collated electronically and stored in the cloud.

“In this process, the examiner does not come in contact with the physical script of candidates as they are scanned and uploaded to the server or cloud. With this innovation the issue of scripts misplacement is totally erased. If a examiner wrongly marks the candidates’ script, the computer will shut him or her down and until that error is detected and resolved, the examiner would not have access to the scripts.

“Because we only have one centre at the moment, which is part of the challenge confronting the project, we communicated with our ICT partners and they came up with a WAEC customised modem. With this, examiners can access candidate’s scripts and mark such from the comfort of their homes. We also have a communication line through which an examiner can communicate with a senior examiner, should any issue arise,” Oforha further explained.

Deputy Registrar, WAEC Head Office, Dr. Olusanya Dacosta, who said that e-marker was primed to deliver accuracy and thoroughness, added that the system would ensure that “you are marking according to the guide. It has an in-built detector checking what you are doing, and as you are marking, the scores are going back to the cloud.

It's often said that modernization makes you smarter. Before the invention of paper around 1200 A.D or B.C (will google it!), how were humans coping?Check your history books or wiki!. Then it was termed "Technology". But now, its just ordinary paper. Or the invention of the printing press around 1300- 1600 AD, how were things?

I think it was Aristotle that said that books were going to make us dumber because we will be carrying less information in our brains!

How has that worked out? Yeah Right.

Foremost Nigerian writer and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka warned yesterday in Awka that if reasonable steps were not taken, the current internet revolution would destroy scholarship.

Delivering the 3rd Zik annual lecture at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, " Soyinka said the heavy reliance on internet for academic activities would soon witness the end of books as instrument for mind development and potential building".

According to him, there has been so much decline in writing and reading among the younger generation and urged them not to allow any primordial considerations to hinder them from developing their innate potentials.

He observed that certain traditional, religious and western teachings enslaved Africans from exploiting their environment and potentials, adding that the problems in Nigeria today such as Boko Haram, which could be attributed to poor mental development occasioned by wrong teaching.

Speaking on the theme; “The Magic Lantern, Excursions in the Creative Realm,” Soyinka said that the sun remained the magic lantern of the entire universe which gave life to the earth.

He said that such communication gadgets like computers and IPAD were capable of bringing an end to the culture of book writing and reading, adding that the end point should be how to find a way of collaborating between book writing and use of internet knowledge.

Their partnership, he stated, may have witnessed a revolution in the communication world, but regrettably has essentially destroyed the realm of imagination in young people.

He enjoined the young people to tap their potentials and not allow certain primordial factors within their environment inhibit them.

Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Inter Party Affairs, Senator Ben Ndi Obi, who endowed the Zik lecture series, said the project was started three years ago to immortalize Nigeria’s first President, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in whom the school was named.

He described the lecture as unique and thought provoking, saying that the theme was one of Soyinka’s enigmatic cum realistic, adding that it was an attempt to unravel same without him it would be like an excursion into oblivion and confusion.

Obi said the lecture series was a turning point in the process of actualization of his childhood dream of immortalizing Zik, explaining that it was for that reason that he endowed N10 million in 2010, with an additional N2 million over a five -year period for research in honor of this “icon and legend of all times”.

Zik’s faith in intellectual resources as a problem-solving, he added, stood tall in all his classical statements and actions as his Lincoln University experience re-affirmed his belief in education as a constructive social force which could be harnessed for social progress.

Chairman of the occasion, Chief Emeka Anyaoku said the lecture was to honour Zik’s legacies and initiatives, adding that people knew him as a great inspirer of nationalism and Africa’s fight against colonialism mainly with his pen, first in Ghana and later, Nigeria.
