Yemi Adenuga loses selection in Ireland Elections!

Meath West Selection: Councillor Murray selected by Fine Gael, ending Yemi Adenuga bid amidst controversy

Oluwayemi Yemi Adenuga, a Nigerian-Irish politician, has been excluded from the Fine Gael candidacy for the Meath West constituency in the upcoming Irish General Election.

Councillor Linda Nelson Murray was selected to represent the party during a convention held at the Newgrange Hotel in Navan, chaired by Deputy Simon Coveney.

With this selection, Fine Gael has now announced 58 candidates across 37 constituencies. Councillor Murray expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am truly honoured to have been selected by the members of Meath West. Having lived and worked here all my life, I have a deep understanding of the issues that matter most to our community.”

Murray, a mother of two, highlighted her commitment to improving childcare access, enhancing mental health services, and advocating for inclusive education and better rural infrastructure. She also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing TD Damien English, whom she considers both a mentor and a friend.

In a notable twist, Yemi Adenuga has faced backlash from some Nigerians who accuse her of supporting a corrupt government in her home country while seeking election in Ireland.

Adenuga previously shared her excitement about her nomination for Fine Gael, expressing gratitude to her supporters and asking for prayers ahead of the selection process.

Politics / Remi Tinubu Unveils National Unity Fabric (Designed By Mofinyinfoluwa Bamidele) by Lizzysamuel(f): 3:52pm On Sep 17
First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has unveiled the OneNigeria/UnityFabric, which she described as a symbol of national unity.

The fabric was designed by 25-year-old Miss Mofinyinfoluwa Bamidele a graduate of the University of Ibadan.

Bamidele, who went home with a prize of ₦25m, emerged the winner of a fabric designs competition, organised by the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), chaired by First Lady.

In her keynote address at the unveiling of the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric and announcement of the winner of the competition held on Monday at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, Tinubu explained that the concept of a national fabric was inspired by her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she saw a similar initiative.

She said the OneNigeria/UnityFabric competition was launched in February 2024, calling on youths aged 15-25 to create a design that would represent Nigeria’s unity.

A panel of judges, including renowned fashion icon Princess Zainab Abba Folawiyo, international textile fashion designer Miss Banke Kuku and other friends of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), selected the best design from 111 entries.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu commended the rigorous selection process, and thanked the judges and members of the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) for their efforts.

“Today, my heart is filled with joy as we have just witnessed the unveiling of the #OneNigeriaUnity Fabric, the announcement of the winner of the competition and the presentation of prize ceremony. I say big congratulations to Miss Bamidele Mufiyinfoluwa, she did quite a fantastic job.

“I would like to briefly share the background to what led us to this moment. In December 2023, I visited Zimbabwe for the launch of #WeAreEqual Unifying Campaign of the Organization of the African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) and on this visit, I came across the concept of a national fabric, which they have, and this fascinated me”.

“I believe this concept is a unifying one, where we can infuse our cultural diversity and break down tribal barriers to identify as a people of one nation. So I decided that it would be a good idea to have a similar experience”.

“Upon my arrival, at one of the meetings of the Governing Council of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), I mooted the idea and to my surprise, everyone seemed excited about it. Thereafter, the #OneNigeriaUnity Fabric Competition was announced through various media platforms in February 2024, calling on all our youth between the ages of 15 to 25 to create a design for a fabric that will be launched as the national unity fabric.

“Entries for this competition closed on the 30th of June, 2024. On 2nd of July, 2024, we invited two panelists; a renowned fashion icon, Princess Zainab Abba Folawiyo, who has been at the forefront of the fashion industry for 60 years, and Miss Banke Kuku, an international textile fashion designer. She’s the one who actually designed the gift scarves I give out because she’s a textile designer.

“Both of them, with members of the Governing Board, and some friends of RHI, had the task of selecting the best design from 111 entries. This selection process was rigorous, but today, we are happy to present the best design selected by our expert judges. Well done, and thank you”, Mrs. Tinubu said.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu also disclosed that the new national fabric would be worn across the country to celebrate the Independence Day Anniversary on October 1, 2024.

She disclosed that the fabric will be mass-produced by local manufacturers to stimulate local textile industries, create jobs, and boost the economy.

The First Lady said the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, fostering creativity, supporting local enterprises, and celebrating national identity and unity of the nation as it moves forward.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to all those who sent in their entries. We received entries from Nigerians across the country, in the Diaspora, five of them are present today, which you all just met, apart from the winner”.

“We also have a brochure of the compilation of all the entries. Every design submitted is a demonstration of the depth of talent we have in Nigeria. I applaud each one of you for your contribution. However, we can only have one winner, but I urge you not to relent in expressing your creativity, imagination and nurturing your dreams and passion”.

Also speaking at the event, the National Vice Chairman of the RHI and wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima, said the fabric initiative is aimed at promoting unity and creativity in Nigeria.

She expressed pride in the realization of the vision of the competition, which encourages Nigerians to think nationally before considering tribal or ethnic loyalties.

She said the initiative includes the production and distribution of 200,000 pieces of a national unity fabric, with significant allocations to Lagos, Kano, and Abuja, and additional pieces to other stakeholders.

The event was witnessed by dignitaries from across the country, including wives of governors, wives of the leaders of the National Assembly and wives of security chiefs.

Others who were at the event were former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole; former First Ladies, including Mrs. Ajoke Muritala Muhammad; Justice Fati Lami Abubakar; and Dame Patience Jonathan.

Politics / DSS Invites Convener Of Group For Suing Lagos Govt Over Dangote’s $100m Land by Lizzysamuel(f): 9:37pm On Sep 13
The lawsuit seeks to uncover the truth surrounding Dangote's claim that he paid $100 million to the state government and ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds.

The Department of State Services (DSS), on Thursday, invited one of the conveners of Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum, Comrade Jamiu Olayinka, for questioning over a suit asking the Lagos State government to account for the $100 million reportedly paid by Aliko Dangote to acquire land for his refinery.

The Lagos natives' leader, who was at work, was asked to honour the impromptu invitation of the secret police at 10:00 am on Thursday, a statement signed by the Media Officer of De Renaissance Patriots Foundation in Lagos State, on Thursday said.

The statement said "having contacted his lawyers and members of the native group he leads, Comrade Olayinka went to honour the DSS’ invitation, which was passed to him via a telephone conversation by a man, who introduced himself as the Director of DSS Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, describing the location of the Service’s office in the area".

The statement reads, "Although he was not detained, his people had insisted that he should give them all the details of what transpired as they had told him before he left for their office that they suspected the invitation was due to the Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum’s involvement in the suit against Lagos State regarding the Dangote Refinery’s $100 million paid to the state government over the natives land taken without compensation and claimed to have been given free for the Dangote’s refinery building some nine years ago.

"As predicted by the people, Comrade Jamiu Olayinka confirmed their thought as right. He said, 'I was asked about the case and I told them we are not going back. I told the (DSS) man that I have every right to sue Lagos State Government for the issues.

“'And he asked to know what can we use to back up our Association and I showed him our registered certificate with CAC. He became perplexed when he saw the registered certification.

“'Their plan is to pressure us to back out from joining the case against the Lagos State Government but we will not bow to any intimidation,” he relayed his experience with DSS to his people Thursday afternoon."

In the meantime, the Yakubu Eleto Chambers, lawyers representing the Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum, have expressed concern that the Lagos State Government, instead of providing answers to the questions asked by De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, about whether or not Dangote Refinery paid the government $100 million as claimed by its Chairman, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, it resorted to using the DSS to intimidate "our clients, who had decided to join in the suit that followed after the state government failed, after seven days, to provide the involvement the natives required".

Principal Partner of the Law Firm and human rights lawyer, Barrister Yakubu Eleto Esq, who spoke to the press said, “We are lawyers to both De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, who wrote a letter on July 27, 2024, to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, under the Freedom of Information Act, asking for information regarding the revelation by Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

"And the FOI Act states that the government or any other such public office so written can be sued if, after seven days, it fails to provide the information demanded.

"The Lagos State Government failed in this regard and we decided to go to court to seek an Order of Mandamus to be compel the state government to provide the information."

“Because the Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum is a group of the Lagos State indigenes who are directly affected by the development, their leaders and members decided to join in the case and, instead for Governor Sanwo-Olu to now be humble enough by commit to the rule of law and await his day in court, he already resorted to using the DSS to pressurize and intimidate the natives in order for them to be cut off from involving themselves in the case and that will be unacceptable,” the human rights lawyer said.

The Applicants – De Renaissance Patriots Foundation and Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum – had files a suit at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, asking the court to compel Lagos State Government to provide a comprehensive and detailed account of the transaction and address critical questions such as why there was no public statement issued regarding the financial transaction.

The lawsuit seeks to uncover the truth surrounding Dangote's claim that he paid $100 million to the state government and ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds.

The court's ruling is anticipated to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this substantial payment and its potential impact on the lives of the Ibeju-Lekki community.

This is contained in an originating motion, brought under Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended; Sections 1,3, 4, 7, 20 and 24 of the Freedom of Information Act 2011 and Inherent jurisdiction of the Honourable Court in the matter.

The application was filed by De Renaissance Patriots Foundation and Ibeju-Lekki Peoples Forum, joining Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State Governor), Attorney General of Lagos State, Accountant General of Lagos State, Permanent Secretary, Lands Bureau, Lagos State and Lagos State Government, as the 1st to 5th Respondents.

The motion, filed and registered by the court with Suit no FHC/L/CS/1603/2024 at 1:20pm on Friday, September 6, 2024, is asking the court for an Order of Mandamus to be issued against the respondents to compel the Lagos State Government to release the information required by the applicants
