Foreign Affairs / South Carolina Primary: Donald Trump Easily Defeats Nikki Haley In Her Home Stat by Lolade45: 11:48am On Feb 26
Donald Trump is one step closer to the Republican presidential nomination after a massive win over Nikki Haley in South Carolina.

The former president won his primary opponent's home state by a 20-point margin, his fourth consecutive victory.

As he celebrated Mr Trump made no mention of Ms Haley, who vowed to stay in the race. Instead he set his sights on the general election in November.

That will be a likely rematch with his successor in the White House.

"We're going to look Joe Biden right in the eye," he told supporters minutes after US media projected him as the winner on Saturday night. "He's destroying our country - and we're going to say 'get out Joe, you're fired'."

Mr Trump lauded his party's "unity" after Saturday's result, saying: "There's never been a spirit like this. I have never seen the Republican Party so unified."

It marked a shift from his response to last month's primary in New Hampshire, where he raged against Ms Haley for "doing a speech like she won".

Ms Haley, who once served as a popular two-term governor of South Carolina, congratulated her opponent on his victory in her speech.

She promised not to quit, however, saying the roughly 40% of the vote she received was "not some tiny group".

"There are huge numbers of voters in our Republican primaries who are saying they want an alternative," she said, emphasising that her continued campaign was not about her own political ambitions.

"I'm not giving up this fight when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden," she added.

She has re-committed to staying in the race until at least Super Tuesday - 5 March - when voters in 16 states will cast their ballots on the same day.

"I'm a woman of my word," the former UN ambassador said. "We're headed to Michigan tomorrow, and we're headed to the Super Tuesday states throughout all of next week.

Nairaland / General / Eu Slash Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions By 90% By 2040 by Lolade45: 6:20pm On Feb 07
EU recommends ambitious 2040 climate target, goes light on farming. STRASBOURG, Feb 6 (Reuters) - The European Commission recommended on Tuesday that the EU slash net greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, an ambitious target that will test political appetite for the region's fight against climate change ahead of EU elections.
Europe's climate agenda is entering a difficult phase as it begins to touch sensitive sectors, such as farming, and as traditional industries face fierce green tech competition from China. While the overall target was within the range recommended by the EU's official climate science advisers, the EU executive weakened part of the recommendation concerning agriculture, in response to weeks of protests by farmers angry about EU green rules, among other complaints.
A previous draft of the EU target, seen by Reuters, had said agriculture would need to cut non-CO2 emissions 30% by 2040 from 2015 levels to comply with the overall climate goal. That was removed from the final draft. "We need to make sure we have a balanced approach," European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra told the European Parliament, as he unveiled the proposal. "The vast majority of our citizens sees the effects of climate change, does want protection, but is also worried about what that implies for their livelihood."
Tuesday's proposal will kick off political debate on the target, but it will be up to a new EU Commission and Parliament, formed after European Parliament elections in June, to pass the final target.

Science/Technology / Telecoms In Big Trouble As NCC Says Service Providers Will Be Held Accountable by Lolade45: 1:59pm On Feb 07
NCC says service providers will be held accountable for poor service delivery. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says it would henceforth hold telecoms service providers accountable for bad customer service.

This was stated by the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, during a meeting with journalists in Abuja. Mr Maidu also used the opportunity to introduce his administration’s five drivers, which includes: training, capacity-building compliance, data drive, digitization, and collaboration.

Mr. Maida said the Commission will hold telecom service providers accountable as consumers pay for these services and service providers must meet their minimal expectations.

“You are going to see a change in the way we make decisions; we are going to be very data-driven. All our decisions are going to be backed up by data as much as possible. We want to reduce subjectiveness and make the right decisions that will improve the industry. “When there is regulation without any consequences or enforcements on obligations, you will agree with me that those obligations’ chances of being met are very low, so as we drive towards delivering an optimal quality of experience for our customers.

“We intend to hold our licensees accountable for all services; after all, consumers pay for the services, and they expect the service to be at a certain level or point. “Last week I spoke about compliance and enforcement but we will also first of all be collaborators; we will place a very high premium on collaboration with all critical stakeholders, including yourselves, to ensure that everybody is carried along in a cooperative process so that we can try to create win-win scenarios for everybody but of course if that is not possible, all the licensees have an obligation and we will not be shy to enforce for the clients.”

Maida said the Commission will focus on the three critical stakeholders—consumers, the government, licences, and the industry—to ensure the growth of the sector.

“The commission also will be driven by their recognition that we have primarily Three critical stakeholders in the industry these are the consumers of telecom services, the industry and the licensees. And the topmost are the Internet service providers, submarine landed cable companies, all of the licensees of the commission and last but not least, the government.”

According to Maida, the Commission recognises that each of these stakeholders has a unique perspective and has different expectations. Our approach will thus walk towards the expectations of these stakeholders and everything else.

The NCC boss gave the assurance that the top priority of the government is to ensure the quality of service, which is fundamental and paramount for consumer experiences of all telecom services.

“For me, the expectation of the consumer is very simple: quality of service. I don’t think you can say anything more than that quality of service and this quality of service we are talking about is a total consumer experience.”

Speaking on the collaboration between industry players, he said the Commission has resolved the issue between two major players and that the NCC will soon state that effect.

“The issues between two of the top big operators, which hopefully sometime today or tomorrow we will be making a press release to let Nigerians and other stakeholders know that the two titans, thus we played the role of mediator and sat down between themselves and resolved their issues… happily.

“We are going to be putting in measures to ensure they don’t get to that stage again. And like I said, we need to foster collaboration before we get to compliance and enforcement. And for our licensees the commission is committed to making life easier for them, so we are going to be doing a lot of advocacy,
