It is because the people do not know what happened. I have been seeing accounts saying that the military was sent to stop the Shiites’ protest or procession. That is a confusing narrative. The military has never been sent to stop the Shiites from doing anything. Never in the history of Nigeria has the military been sent to stop the Shiites during their protests or whatever. It is not true. And that is where we are getting it wrong. The military men were carrying out their duties and the Shiites took them on. You must understand that. We have had three clashes now and the three clashes happened because the Shiites attacked the military personnel in the course of their duties. Now the question is: why should the Shiites take on the military? When you hear that a particular group takes on the military and security agencies of the state, you begin to wonder why. The reason why they are doing that is because they don’t believe in the authority of the state. Many people will disagree with that as there is no proof that they took on the military. How did they take on the military? Of course, you know the beginning of this issue. It started in December 2015 when the Chief of Army Staff (Lt. -Gen. Tukur Buratai) was passing through Zaria, Kaduna State. The Chief of Army Staff was with his entourage. He was in a convoy and he was going for an important national assignment. His entourage met the Shiites on the road during their procession and they refused to let his vehicles pass. And there were thousands of them. European Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker, said on Friday that a suggestion that the EU might try to set up migrant camps in North Africa was no longer on the agenda. EU member states are in disagreement over how the bloc should deal with tens of thousands of migrants arriving annually in Europe, the bulk of them by sea from Turkey and North Africa. See More>> https://www.freshreporters.com/2018/10/we-wont-build-migrant-camps-in-north_70.html In June, a summit of all EU leaders asked the Commission to study ways to set up “regional disembarkation platforms’’ in North African countries, including Tunisia, for migrants rescued by European vessels in the Mediterranean. However, there has been little appetite in Africa and EU officials have long questioned the legality and practicality of such camps — a view underlined in Juncker’s blunt reply. “This is no longer on the agenda and never should have been,” Juncker told a news conference in Tunis with Tunisian Prime Minister, Youssef Chahed. Finally, the journey of Poverty to Prosperity took off yesterday at the Transcorp Hilton. Great conversations and solutions were put forward by the robust audience pooled from both the Private and public sector. The Nigeria Economic Summit Group Chairman, Mr Asue Ighodalo in his opening speech stated that, “There is no better time than now to keep our eyes on the ball because, no matter the outcome on the 16 of February 2019, we must all work to ensure that we still have a strong economy to build on, the morning after.” This set the right tone for the event proceedings as every stakeholder admitted that it is important that the Nation sustains its growth witnessed in the previous year. This included the 24 places jump in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking and an upward movement by 10 places in the 2018 WEF Global Competitiveness Report. See More>> https://www.freshreporters.com/2018/10/the-24th-nes-summit-nigeria-commences.html His opening remarks paved way for the keynote address which was delivered by Prof. John M. Lewis of the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), John Hopkins University. He dissected the historical background of Nigeria’s economy, with a strong comparison to that of Indonesia- a similar economy which has defied all odds to become prosperous. Quite significant were the five (5) strategic points that can help move the Nation from Poverty to Prosperity. 1. In cases of successful economic transition, development-oriented leadership drives change. 2. Modest changes in governance and institutions can produce significant growth effects. 3. Focus on binding constraints to growth. 4. Focus on livelihoods rather than “jobs.” 5. Revive sectorial strategies, especially industrial policy. 6. In his concluding remarks, he suggested a few tactical moves that can be made by the Government to accelerate the journey to prosperity. This included the forming an Effective economic team, strengthening peak economic institutions, alliance with urban entrepreneurs and rural producers and breaking through critical bottlenecks in infrastructure, notably electricity and ensure more predictable environment for transactions. The President ably represented by the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo steered the conversation by reading the President’s speech, which highlighted the administration’s achievements in the last one year and most especially the implementation of some of the resolutions made at the last Economic Summit. See More >> https://www.freshreporters.com/2018/10/the-24th-nes-summit-nigeria-commences.html He later went on to declare the #NES24 open with the commencement of the plenary sessions. Interestingly, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo mentioned that the “Grand Corruption” that takes place in Government remains his biggest shock since he became the Vice President. This was his response to Prof. Ngaire Woods of the University of Oxford during the first plenary session. This was followed by the strategic breakout sessions and the second plenary session focused on running “Effective Public Institutions” with several revelations and resolutions on how to better the Nigerian Civil service with the Head, Mrs Oyo-Ita Winifred Ekanem present. The day closed with a welcome dinner for participants to enjoy a night of good music, comedy and conversations. Today is Day 2 of this journey and you can join us from anywhere in the world by following our social media pages; Twitter: @nesgnigeria, Facebook: @NigeriaEconomicSummitGroup, Instagram: @nesg_summit and YouTube channel : Nigeria Economic Summit Group for the live coverage. Senior Advocate of Nigeria and the Director, Strategic Communications of President Muhammadu Buhari 2019 Presidential Campaign, Mr. Fetus Keyamo has reacted to a statement by National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan who said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2019 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, if elected in 2019, would jail “all looters” of public treasury under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. Ologbondiyan in the statement on Monday said said Atiku would also concentrate on the onerous duty of governance and rescuing the people from hunger and bloodletting. See more>> https://www.freshreporters.com/2018/10/when-looters-say-they-will-jail-looters.html “The PDP forewarns all looters in the Buhari Presidency, including those involved in the alleged stealing of over N14 trillion from several sleazy oil deals; the alleged undisclosed oil revenue leading to the deadlock at the Federal Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC); alleged stealing of funds meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) among other sleazes covered by the Buhari Presidency, to get ready to vomit their loots and face the law in no distant time,” the party said. when looters say they will jail ‘looters’, then what we expect to be established is a ‘lootocracy’, which is a govt of looters, by looters and for looters. Here is one example. Keyamo had said on his Twitter handle He also said Let’s start this series showcasing achievements, but we will not forget to add that if you have a President who is patently corrupt, he cannot achieve this much with so little. PPD’s Ologbondiyan had said “Atiku Abubakar comes with the Nigerian resilient entrepreneurial spirit to once again open up our economy, attract investments, create jobs and unite our citizenry for a more productive nation. “What Nigerians earnestly desire now is a resourceful President, not an incompetent leader who lacks the capacity to run a complex economy; who stays aloof and completely insensitive to the plights of citizens, while providing official cover for his officials to fritter away trillions of naira from our beleaguered national treasury,” the PDP said. President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and former Speaker and Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, have called for adequate funding of the National Assembly. The three Nigerian leaders, who spoke at the convocation ceremony of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS/University of Benin Post Graduate Programmes for the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 academic sessions held at the National Assembly, yesterday, said lawmakers in the eight assembly had committed themselves to improving the lives of Nigerians. They also harped on adequate funding of both arms of legislature because of the important role they play in nation building. The Senate President, who is the chairman of NILD Governing Council, said core legislative, oversight and representative functions of the legislature are to contribute to the quality of governance. He said: ‘’There is no gainsaying the fact that the core legislative, oversight and representative functions of the legislature provide an essential contribution to the quality of our democracy and governance as a whole. “In the eighth National Assembly, the legislature has played a greater role in policy formulation and has engaged more robustly with the Executive at the various stages of policy formulation. This stems from our conviction that the task of nation-building must be a collective one, and this sometimes requires sacrifices on the part of the individual. “Many of the legislative measures we have pursued since 2015 have been targeted at driving productivity, easing access to finance, creating jobs and improving livelihoods. Legislative proposals in this area are focused on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs, particularly in reducing regulatory burdens and easing access to capital, with the objective of having a large number of sustainable fast-growing small and mid-size businesses. ‘’We have also taken legislative action to tackle tax avoidance and evasion, to encourage compliance with tax obligations by all persons.” Also noting that the National Assembly had helped save Nigeria from collapse, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said to attain stable, strong and effective governance in Nigeria, the National Assembly must receive priority attention in terms of capacity building. Arguing that the legislature was the true face of democracy, Dogara said it was preferable to build healthy and strong institutions as the legislature than strong personalities. He said: “It is our considered opinion that if there is any institution of government that should receive priority attention in terms of capacity building, it is the legislature. This is because the legislature is the true face of democracy.” Governor of Sokoto State and a former Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, said there was an urgent need to properly fund the legislature. He, however, noted that this might not be well received by the executive arm of government. According to him, to get better legislation churned out, the National Assembly needs funds. Cristiano Ronaldo stated on Monday he is an “example” in his behaviour on and off the field amid allegations of rape made against the five-time Ballon d’Or winner in the United States. “I know I am an example, 100 per cent, in the pitch and outside the pitch,” Ronaldo told a press conference ahead of his return to Manchester United, where he spent six years as a player, with Juventus in the Champions League. A former American model Kathryn Mayorga, 34, of Las Vegas, accused Ronaldo, in a 32-page complaint filed last month with a district court in Nevada, of raping her on June 13, 2009, just before he joined Real Madrid from United. Ronaldo strenuously denied the allegations in a statement just over two weeks ago and has been backed by his club. “I am always smiling, I am a happy man, I’m blessed that I play in a fantastic club, I have a fantastic family, I have four kids, I am healthy,” added Ronaldo. “I have everything. So the rest doesn’t interfere with me. I’m very, very well.” The accusation hasn’t so far affected Ronaldo’s form on the field for his new club, who he joined from Madrid for 112 million euros ($128 million) in July. Ronaldo has scored five goals in his last six Serie A appearances, but has yet to open his account in the Champions League after being sent-off just 30 minutes into his European debut against Valencia. “I’m not going to lie in this situation,” he added. “My lawyers are confident and of course I am, too. “The most important (thing) is I enjoy the football, I enjoy my life. “The rest, I have people who take care of my life. Of course, the truth is always coming in the first position. So, I’m good.” See more>> https://www.freshreporters.com/2018/10/rape-allegations-im-role-model-says.html

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has assembled 22 witnesses to testify against the immediate-past Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, in court. The anti-graft agency is set to arraign the former governor before the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday (today) for an alleged fraud of N2.2bn. It alleged that Fayose took possession of the money “to fund your 2014 gubernatorial campaign in Ekiti State, which you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act, to wit: criminal breach of trust/stealing.” Among the witnesses lined up to testify against ex-governor is a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, and a former Group Managing Director of Diamond Bank Plc, Mr Alex Otti. Also to testify is Ayotunde Owope, said to be Fayose’s account officer. According to the EFCC, Owope opened a bank account for Fayose and “he will give evidence on how funds were transferred from one account into another.” Obanikoro, who was listed as the second witness, is expected to testify about how he took N2.2bn from the then National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, for onward delivery to Fayose in June 2014. Obanikoro is to narrate to the court how Fayose allegedly requested that out of the N2.2bn, 1.2bn should be delivered to him in cash while the remaining N800m should be converted to US dollars. After arraigning Fayose today (Monday), the EFCC is expected to start calling its witnesses. However, it was reported that Obanikoro, who was listed as the second witness, has left with the country for the US, with no definite return date. “Obanikoro travelled out on Wednesday evening, saying he wanted to go for medical treatment. He gave no date when he would return,” according to a source. Ex-Group Managing Director, Diamond Bank, Otti, is to tell the court how sometime in 2014, Obanikoro approached him in his office in Lagos, saying he expected the Central Bank of Nigeria to pay certain sums of money into the Diamond Bank account of a firm, Sylvan Mcmanara Ltd, and that he needed the money or most of it transferred to Ekiti. Fayose will be standing trial alongside a firm Spotless Limited. Read More>> https://www.freshreporters.com/2018/10/alleged-n22bn-fraud-obanikoro-alex-otti.html

The ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo said he does not know the position that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu currently holds in the ruling All Progressives Congress(Apc). This was said during a programme tagged, “The Talk,” which was aired on a YouTube Channel, “Voice of the People .” The ex-President who was asked to identify the various positions of certain political icons in the country. He identified Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as the President and Vice President respectively, while he also described Senator Bukola Saraki as the Senate President. When asked to identify Tinubu, he said, “Oh, Bola? Bola is supposed to be the leader of the APC. I don’t know the position of his leadership as you and I are talking.” In the interview, which seemed to have been recorded before he openly endorsed the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abibakar, the former President said he had hoped that Atiku would succeed him as President in 2007. Obasanjo said this was the reason he gave Atiku a lot of responsibilities but his former deputy made some wrong decisions. “Atiku didn’t want to become even a Vice President (in 1999). He was elected as a governor,” he recalled. He, however, said his plan was to mentor Atiku to be his successor but his former deputy failed him. Obasanjo added, “My plan was that he would be given a lot of work to do domestically and Atiku even used to complain that I gave him too much work to do, which was intentional because I wanted him to get to know things. “My second term was that having prepared him for domestic issues, I would want him to represent Nigeria for one year at the African Union, Economic Community of West African States and the United Nations for a year so that he would be fully prepared, but the first thing I found out was that his judgement was not right on many occasions.” The former President, who insisted that Buhari had not done well in government, said as a watchman, he would continue to speak up when things were going wrong. He said there was the need for Nigerians, especially the youth, to elect leaders that could fit into a “digital 21st century post-modern era rather than electing analogue personalities.” On the Boko Haram crisis, Obasanjo said after he left office in 2007, his successor (late Umaru Yar’Adua) mismanaged the issue, which caused the group to become terrorists. Obasanjo said had he been President at the time, Boko Haram would not have become what it is today. He recalled that in 2011, with the permission of former President Goodluck Jonathan, he visited the family of Boko Haram founder, Mohammed Yusuf, and other aggrieved persons in the terrorist group and they explained why they were carrying out attacks. The former President added, “In 2011, I went to Maiduguri. This was after Boko Haram had attacked the UN building in Abuja and I just wanted to know who they were and if they had leaders and what their grievances were. “I found out that these elements of Boko Haram had been there even while I was in government. And they, through their intermediary, said they were there and I didn’t disturb them so they didn’t disturb me. “They were preaching Sharia and that was what they wanted. But, according to them, when I left government, they were being chased and haunted and they lost a number of their adherents and they decided to fight back and even the leader of their sect, Mohammed Yusuf, was killed and his in-law was also killed. “They went to court to try and get compensation which was granted to them but the state government did not pay.”
