After taking over at Old Trafford this summer, Mourinho brought Mata on as a sub in the Community Shield against champions Leicester City but then subbed him 27 minutes later.
The frosty touchline pictures at Wembley in August fuelled the theories that the pair didn't get on and Mata's United future was in serious doubt.
