My experience was almost similar to op's.
I was disgusted with the commercialization that I saw in the pentecostal church where I was attending. To make matters worse, I was exposed to Darwinian evolution, Christian Science and so much stuff that I became confused. I decided to quit Christianity and just try to be good.
That was when I met the people you quoted above. No collection plates, no donations or tithe cards. Emphasis on your getting to know God personally. I decided to try praying. I just told God, alone on my own, that if He can make Himself real to me so that I don't doubt His existence anymore, then I will worship Him.
It's difficult to explain what really happened but such overwhelming peace and joy filled me that I felt like I was floating on air. And it wasn't just a day's experience, but even when I have challenges and pray, the peace overwhelms me.
Atheism challenges the intellect but there are other facets of our humanity that natural science cannot explain. I watched a video recently where the poster boy for Atheism, Richard Dawkins was now confessing that he believes in intelligent design. So much for those he led astray!
