This is pure rubbish as far as I am concerned. Exporting raw crops abroad does nothing to help the economy. What should be done is promoting industrialization using these cash crops as a starting point. Cashew sells for a little above $1000 per tonne but their derivatives from the nuts, oil and fruits can fetch around $10000. Processing the various cash crops into industrial products like chocolate from cocoa, industrial starch and ethanol from cassava and leather shoes from hides and skins should be the step that should be promoted instead of just exporting them raw as this would earn higher amount of foreign exchange and provide employment. In light of this projection should be made about the projected demand for products that can be made from the cash crops. You don't the international community to buy your products for charity,

you are absolutely right.. the focus should be on setting up processing factories across the country. India is the largest importer of raw cashew nuts in the world and it's also the largest exporter of processed cashew nuts in the world.
there are few cashew processing factories in nigeria and they are mostly owned or controlled by foreigners.
there is so many derivatives from cashew but we tend to waste and loose all the benefits by selling it out in the raw form.
the nuts produce a substance called CNSL, It is another source of income for those who know about. The juice from the fruit can be used to produce wine and fruit juice but nowadays local suppliers are only interested in the nuts, when they pick the cashew they remove the nuts and forget about the fruit.
if government can support SMEs very well and ensure banks give adequate loan to investors who are willing to set up processing factories, it will go a long way to industrialize the sector.

but I still believe what the governemt has done is a step in the right direction. we will gradually get there.

kogi state have the largest concentration of cashew nuts in nigeria, followed by oyo state.

You are absolutely right. I once burnt my hand in that trade. I deligated some idiiot employees to source the product and package for export. They went to Kogi and party away with the school girls. Long story short we ended up loosing N13m in total. We've since then moved on and done well anyway.

As an investor, its advisable one is on ground to monitor the whole process. Thank God to hear you have moved on and doing well. I think the bad experience has made you a better trader. I think once someone understands the technical and practical aspects of the business, it becomes easier thereafter.

NO sir. The best quality of cashew in nigeria is found in ogbomosho (oyo state)

This is a very good development. Cashew season will start in february. There is a lot of opportunity available in cashew nuts trading.
But it is very risky just like any other business, you need to learn the trade and have the basic knowledge before you can start it. Its quite profitable only if its done properly.
You can sell locally to exporters in nigeria or export it directly to foreign buyers.
You can also act as a link between buyers and sellers (broker).. In this case you get a certain fixed commission agreed by all parties involved.
You can also be a local agent.. Bu sourcing for exporters or suppliers.

Cashew trees start producing from the 3rd or 4th year.
Cashew crop is seasonal and only comes out from february - may.. Sometimes it comes out in january in some regions. And it also ends in june sometimes.
The crops come out at different times of the season, there's what we call first crop, second crop and sometimes 3rd crop.
First crop usually comes out in january / february or march.
Second crop: mid march - april / may
3rd crop: may - june

Yes for 2016, for how long can one store these nuts and under what conditions should they be.

Looking at the possibility of buying so much even without having a demand and storing it up for when the demand would come.

Once the nuts are well sun dried and have 10% or less moisture content, it can be stored in a warehouse for 1 year or more. It should be well packaged in jute bags only.
Nuts should be well sun dried for at least 3 days to achieve 10% or less moisture content. The drying should be very thin so sun can get to almost all the nuts on the sundrying ground.
