The Minister of Health , Dr Osagie Ehanire, on Thursday, revealed that 113 health workers had been infected with COVID- 19 . Ehanire, who disclosed this at the press briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID - 19 in Abuja , said they included workers in the public and private health facilities . He, therefore, reiterated his advice to health workers that it was dangerous to treat coronavirus patients without using personal protective equipment . The minister had , at the task force media briefing in Abuja on April 23 , said about 40 health workers in the country had tested positive for coronavirus. Ehanire, who lauded health workers for their commitment to the war against COVID- 19 , warned them against treating patients without the PPE. He said, “Please, do not treat any patient without using the PPE . Frontline health workers must undertake refresher training at intervals . This warning has become necessary due to the number of health workers , who have tested positive for COVID- 19 . They are over 40 now and they have been quarantined . ” But the Nigerian Medical Association, through its National President, Dr Francis Faduyile, in its reaction , said most of those who contracted COVID- 19 were not health workers treating COVID- 19 patients , but personnel in other hospitals . On Thursday, the health minister said the risk of being infected with COVID- 19 was the reason why the task force warned health workers against treating patients without using the PPE. He said, “The latest figure we have is that 113 health workers have been infected . They are not all public health workers . There are some from private hospitals . “If you hear us speak frequently against treating coronavirus in private clinics , we are actually referring to people who do so without precaution and training . They risk infecting themselves and their families . Health care workers with no training have no business handling coronavirus . “As for those who do not have equipment , we have said that we will provide protective equipment . Let me remind you that there is a global shortage. They (the pieces of equipment ) are really scarce but we are doing what we can to make sure our frontline workers have the requirement. We also have a stockpile that we can send quickly . For example, we sent a stockpile to Kano. ” COVID- 19 patients seeking alternative treatment , FG raises the alarm The minister also stated that the country would be in a difficult position if infected persons continued to hide or seek alternative treatment instead of approaching government. |

A former acting Vice - Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University , Ile - Ife , Prof. Anthony Elujoba , has called on the Federal Government to explore the opportunities offered by diverse plants in the country to treat victims of coronavirus. Coronavirus, which started in Wuhan, China in late 2019 , has killed thousands of people globally and four months after there is no known cure for it. Elujoba , who is a professor of Pharmacognosy at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the university in a statement on Tuesday, called on the Federal Government to create isolation/ treatment centres where patients who choose to be treated with alternative medicine would be attended to all over the country. The professor said the World Health Organisation and the federal agencies including the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research ; the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control and some Nigerian universities had invested in herbal medicines in the past. He said it was now time to explore the dividends of their investments by using the products of their investment in herbal medicine to offer solution to the pandemic. Elujoba , however , said alternative medicine should not be confused with witchcraft and occultism. He argued that the spread and death rate occasioned by coronavirus should “push us to alternative actions before too late . ” “We read on a daily basis testimonies of several patients from here and elsewhere of COVID- 19 including chief executives in governments using or talking about herbal options , one president has spoken publicly on herbal cure . “ … It is time for dividends of the past expenditures on herbal development and time to start proactive herbal research on these emerging diseases. ” |
German labs are now able to carry out almost 900 , 000 tests a week for the novel coronavirus, officials said on Wednesday , as they plan to widen testing among health workers . “Today, we have a theoretically possible capacity of almost 900 , 000 tests (per week ) in Germany already, as long as the materials for these tests are available , ” Health Minister Jens Spahn told reporters in Berlin. Roughly 470 ,000 tests were carried out last week , suggesting there is spare capacity that could help prevent outbreaks among medical staff at hospitals and care homes . “I think it’s very , very important to see that with what we ’ ve achieved together in recent weeks, including through the strong lockdown, the biggest risk for an outbreak is in healthcare ,” Spahn said. Tests should be carried out “as comprehensively and preventively as possible” among staff, including in care homes, he said. Federal law and testing guidelines from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI ) for disease control were being adjusted to reflect these aims, Spahn added. Such low figures have encouraged federal and regional officials to loosen some elements of the lockdown, including opening smaller shops from last week and sending some pupils back to school from next week . But new rules including a nationwide requirement to wear a facemask in shops and on public transport have entered into force , in an attempt to prevent a second wave. ( AFP) |
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Tuesday said it would target testing two million people in the next three months. The NCDC DG , Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, who said this at the Presidential Task Force on COVID- 19 media briefing in Abuja , also said it cost between $ 18 and $ 20 to test a COVID- 19 sample . According to him , the cost does not include human resources and other expenses. Ihekweazu said these as the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd . ) sent a team of experts to Kano State on Tuesday barely 24 hours after he imposed two- week total lockdown on the state. There have been concerns about the COVID- 19 cases and the increasing deaths in the state, which the NCDC and the state government are investigating. But on Tuesday, the NCDC boss said the Federal Government would step up testing in Kano and other states in the country . He said compared with South Africa , Nigeria was lagging behind in terms of the number of people tested for COVID- 19 . Ihekweazu said that it would be impossible to achieve the two million target without huge financial support. He said that to achieve the two million target, at least 50 , 000 samples must be tested in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory within the set period . He said the ban on inter - state movements, which was announced by the President on Monday , would prevent transmission of the virus to areas where cases had not been reported. Ihekweazu stated , “ There are four states where we have not confirmed a single case . Our goal is to avoid a single case in any of those states and to keep them exactly that way. The director general had on Monday listed Nasarawa , Yobe , Cross River and Kogi as states that had not recorded any COVID- 19 case . But on Tuesday morning, the Nasarawa State Government said the state had recorded a case of the virus. Admitting that Nigeria was lagging behind in terms of testing , Ihekweazu said, “In order to test two million people in three months, we need to test 50 ,000 samples per state, depending on population size . ” |

Policemen manning a checkpoint at Ode- Irele in the Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State to enforce the curfew order by the state government have injured a nurse on emergency duty , Modupe Ajama, after throwing a stick at a motorcycle conveying her to hospital. It was gathered that the overzealous policemen did not bother to stop the motorcyclist before throwing the stick in a bid to stop the motorcycle. PUNCH Metro learnt that the rider lost control and the motorcycle dragged the nurse and the motorcyclist on the asphaleted road, which led to Ajama’s skin peeling on the road. Ajama told our correspondent that despite her pleas to be taken to hospital, the cops abandoned her on the road. She said, “On April 22 , I received an emergency call from my colleague around 8 . 20 pm to come and lend a helping hand to a pregnant woman , who was in labour with a twin gestation, being a professional midwife licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria . “I was to receive the babies from the theatre and resuscitate one of them, who had fetal distress. I immediately came to the Irele - Okitipupa Road and saw a motorcyclist, who just dropped off a passenger , and I asked him to convey me to the hospital . “Getting to the Irele roundabout, we saw a checkpoint and I explained to the security agents there that I am a nurse working with the Irele General Hospital and that I was called for an emergency situation in the hospital and I showed them my identification card and I was allowed to proceed . “We came across a second checkpoint around the Bobby ’ s shop in Irele and I explained to the police personnel and I was allowed to go; we passed through the third checkpoint, but while approaching the fourth checkpoint around the Erica pharmaceutical shop , on sighting the motorcycle, a policeman just came from the left side of the road, threw a stick at it, which made the rider to lose control and both of us fell and the motorcycle skidded, dragging us both on the asphalted road to the other side of the road . “The cop , who threw the stick came closer with a gun and I begged him to please take me to the hospital as I needed to be attended to, but he just left us and said ‘Good for you , God catch you , bastard’ . The policemen at the previous checkpoints , who saw the accident , rushed to where we were and got a motorcycle among the ones they had seized to take me to hospital . ” Ajama, who stated that she sustained multiple injuries on her upper jaw , arms, face and right knee , also alleged that her Android phone and the sum of N 22 , 000 were stolen from her bag at the scene of the crash . The Chairman of the Irele unit of the National Association of the Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Okikiola Aremu , who called for justice for its member , alleged that the Divisional Police Officer and the Commander in charge of the checkpoints were trying to shield the suspects. He said, “We want justice to prevail , because the police are hiding so many things. They are working with the community policing volunteers and the person , who assaulted the nurse, was among them. “The community policing personnel are carrying rifles, which is against the law , and now the police are trying to shift the blame away from them. “The commander in charge of the checkpoints and the DPO knew who threw the stick , but they are trying to shield the person . We want justice to be served because we cannot continue to put the lives of health workers at risk . " |
