1. PHD in Germany is for 3 years, while it's 4 or 5 in the USA(Averagely 5 years).

2. PHD in the Germany is regarded as employment mostly, and you're paid better than the stipend you get after Funding in the US.(Not scholarships like DAAD though).

3. After your PHD in US, Your best bet for Green card is EB1 visa and it's by luck. The new German law enacted this year can give you German citizenship a year after your PHD if you learn German to C1 level. With the German passport, you can apply for EBI visa.

4. With a PHD admission, you can get appointment in days for Germany, and visa approval max of 4 weeks.

I stated all those for Germany because I know people have limited knowledge and you'll mostly get for US. If I was you though, I'll go for Germany, earn more in three years , get my citizenship with one of the strongest passport on planet earth.

For Germany, he will get the permanent residence after his PhD and can work towards citizenship.

Lastly Phd trajectory is a bit relaxed in Germany compared to US. No heavy coursework and TA or RA problems, you only focus on some research and do few coursework that you can spread throughout the Phd trajectory.

However OP should be willing to learn learn German to have a smooth transition to industry after the phd.

Life is not cheap in Nigeria ooo, to be realistic.

Some times I just sit down and look back at life.

When I was in Nigeria, I was spending more than 40 percent of my earnings on food. Not to talk of rent, electricity and other things.

In Europe I am able to save more than 60 percent of my earnings every month.

It's easier to save money in Europe than Nigeria if you are very disciplined.

I don't understand where people get the notion that life is cheaper in Nigeria than western world, Europe to be precise.

You be confirm person. Some guys from my programme went to Croatia as part of their mobility. University of Zagreb. They stayed in mixed hostel.

My close gee alway dey gist me he dey whine me say I missed a lot say come see fine babes for Croatia. Like these people are more beautiful than Spanish, Italian and German babes combined together.

They had lots of good relationships with them. But my guy don already marry and born pikin for his country if not, I knew he would have dated some Croatian babes.

Maybe it's the reality in UK, I have not been there before, but based on my experience living in 4 European country. An educated Nigerian guy with a good job and correct packaging won't find it difficult to mingle with or date an European lady.

Some of them may have some baise, but there are plenty fishes in the river.

I swear to God if I had not gotten a babe that we have been through thing and thick together while I was in the University in Nigeria and I can't even imagine disappointing her because of what she meant in my life.

The easiest thing for me would have dating or getting married to an European.


As an Erasmus Mundus scholar, I interact with lots of Spanish and Italian whom I could have dated if I wanted to. Same as a phd guy also.

It depends on you how you carry yourself. It's not a big deal for a Nigerian or black guy to date a beautiful European babe.

I have lived in 4 European countries in 2 years and I've seen lots of black guys dating beautiful European.

Just on Facebook today a random guy interviewing people on the street of Italy interviewed a Nigerian guy who got married to a young beautiful Italian lady. They already have a young boy. From their interview, they met when they where in the university.

I've lived in Italy and Spain it is not a big deal to see a black guy dating a Spanish or Italian in the cities I have lived in.

My close friend is dating a Chinese lady. Very young and beautiful babe who recently completed her PhD. My guy also is about to start his PhD.

I belong to a watsapp group of Nigerian students in Italy and its no big deal to see guys from the group getting married to Europeans.

It depends on whom you are and the type of people you move with. It's nothing special for a sensible well to do Nigerian or African to date European.

Mine was studying a course I have never enjoyed for a day , I was studying civil engineering in Lagos State polytechnic and I struggled throughout my ND, it was at the point of entering HND when I personally and purposely spoke to my self and thank God my inner self listened. I decided to write Jamb again and I gained admission to study physics in Unilag.
Of a truth I am feeling fulfilled taking that decision,about to finish my masters in physics and PhD loading. Teaching may not be paying as we thought but the greater fulfilment I have now is worth more than money.
Please stay in a profession you find joy and fulfillment in, you can be making millions and hate going to work.

I had similar experience with you, I studied architecture during my ND, even although I graduated top of my class, I had no passion for the course. I wrote jamb and got admission to study mechanical engineering in OAU. It was one of the best decision I made.

Since you are almost done with your masters degree, I advise you to search for PhD positions in Europe. Focus on countries like Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark.

They have several funding depending on which area of physics you have specialized. Also, PhD is a job position in any of these countries. You will work as an early stage researcher and write your PhD dissertation around the projects you have completed.
